it should read "trolling is an art!"

Anyway, I'm well aware of how that quote is traditionally used, I should know having said it dozens of times. I was trying to make a valid point though, I don't see it as a form of art, when I see people trolling they use arguments, insults, vitriol, and subtlety to invoke a specific response. It's all quite thought out, and to me that's more of a science than an art; though maybe I'm biased.

These people have no friends in real life so they endeavour to gain a sense of superiority on the internet, using their anonymity to establish a feeling that they are better than everyone else and don't have to care what anyone thinks about them, when really they're compensating for the fact that they're painfully lonely and socially incompetent.

Ignoring them. A troll likes to set off highly emotional reactions to other people by expending a minimal effort. If no one was to reply to their provocations, they would see no fun in their particular site and leave. Unfortunately, most people are very, very stupid.

The true problem are the stealth trolls, who manage to get others to flare while keeping themselves in the clear. They're like a tiny Hannibal Lecter. There's no real solution to those, really.

Yeah, I've seen some great StealthTrolls in my time, one started a 8 topic flamewar about 9/11 conspiracies (on a different forum)

Without trying to come off like an arrogant bastard, it's just odd how many misconceptions about trolls I see in this thread. Trolls troll mainly for one reason: their fun. Most serious trolls are far from stupid but are instead fairly clever people who troll to amuse themselves with the stupidity of the response they get. I don't think anybody trolls because "they are an attention whore" or something similar. Attention whores seek other, more socially accepted ways, of standing in the spotlight.

I think you're definitely right in that there are trolls who can brilliantly manipulate people's egos to piss them off for their own amusement, but I think a larger amount of trolls are probably egotistical people who just like to be infuriating assholes on the internet. From what I've seen so far (although I haven't been on the Escapist for that long) This site seems largely friendly and mostly empty of theses people, but there are the occasional jerks who sully our good name.
But of course, that's why we have the Spanish Inquisition >

Here's an oddity to ponder.

Internet trolls start 'flame wars,' common trolls (as used in most media) have a weakness to fire.

Perhaps they start the wars so that the fire won't be used on them...
