I can certainly see why people would consider this to be making a big deal out of nothing. But the difference is that this isn't just some guy being a dick, this is people taking pleasure out of saying stuff that they KNOW would cause pain to loved ones and even going as far as to rub it in the face of these people and let them suffer for laughs.
I was frankly disgusted by that story about the girl dying in the car crash and the pictures being leaked to the internet, people who live to cause pain for others, regardless of anonymity or not are still far beyond simple idiots.

The point is, yes lots of trolls are just boneheads, but the ones mentioned here, go way beyond that.

I admit I laughed at that. Since there is no way you can get rid of anonymity on the internet, the only thing those parents should do is not take it seriously. Its not like there will be any physical harm brought by the words, the fact that they don't know the girl should be reason enough to not believe them when they say she was stupid/emo/etc.

White Knighting and going on about how you'd "kick their asses in RL" won't do anything, and will just make them laugh more.

It's happened to a couple of memorial pages I've been apart of on Facebook. It didn't last long on one page, simply because the moderators disabled comments during the night when they weren't around and re-enabled them when the page was being monitored. The problem is, although emotions are running high, people don't know when to just sit back and ignore it. The reality is, you cannot stop them by reacting to it with more words.

Can someone tell me what happened in the video, like a summary(can't watch at Uni)?
The only one I'm familiar with was something happening in Australia about trolls grieving families of children who died(One drowned,one abducted, one stabbed in school) on facebook. I get bored and sometimes read the conservative newspapers against better judgement and it was a featured article and they basically had a summary of what happened.

I then went on Encyclopedia Dramatica and searched trolls to see if they would at least reference it somewhere in the article, the image summary was at the begining of the f'ing article. These shitty newspapers are just encouraging these trolls because they're written by the kind of people who would take online ad-hominem attacks as a death threat.

And really somewhere in the newspaper a 'concerned group of parents' formed a group to fight these trolls, and try to extract their information(Which is ofcourse not theirs). Someone innocent is going to get killed because a troll who posts goatse on a childs facebook page will use the sock-puppets info and someone with buckets full of rage will try to get even with them.

Really,giving these trolls attention is the worst thing you can do

Edit:Yes I think I was right about what I suspected after reading the comments , I actually think the newspapers are doing it for publicity, trolls are gonna rip the page straight out and use it to help them fap.

Even though this is heartless...so? People truly are utter douche bags when given anonymity. If people are given the ability to not be held for what they say, of course they are going to abuse it.

Just know that they wouldn't fucking dare say it to your face. With that in mind, all the threats can be ignored.

This is true, and is the reason I think internet anonymity is a bad thing.

Dynamic IPs should be scrapped, and people should be forced to use their real name and address for all internet activity (forum sign ups and wot-not). This would end internet trolling and a lot of cyber bullying in an instant - kids will be more reluctant to behave like assholes when their daddy will give them a thick ear for getting his internet connection cut off.

This will happen eventually I think. Trolls are destroying the internet.

Also, the guys that are banding together "to fight internet trolling" - you can't fight the internet 0_O

I saw that in the newspaper, and I'm gonna admit, I lol'd. It's fucking horrible obviously, but like iLikeHippos said, I laugh whenever I hear someone non-internet say internet stuff like 'trolling'. There was also this box in the newspaper that talked about how these 'internet vigilantes' followed the 'rules of the internet' like a Bible.

Trolls like this ruin the internet for everyone else. It makes the whole place seem like these breeding ground for heartless dickjobs who think /b/ and Anonymous are the greatest things to ever happen to the world. It's disgusting what they do and they definitely don't deserve world attention.

Is it me, or does any and every news source completely mess up on informing non internet savvy individuals about the dangers of the internet?

I've seen news articles about hacking, phishing scams, piracy, bullying and now trolling... each and every article seems like the topic is being explored by a complete dunce. My mom came to me with concerns about the internet... She is so brainwashed by the news and papers that I think she is now incapable of traversing the internet safely as she will hit every trap there is. She has already had her facebook account hacked... why I don't know, but it was stupid none the less.

The simple fact of the internet is, if you want to be COMPLETELY safe from this crap you ignore social networking altogether.

Also, It makes me nervous that I really didn't get too much of a reaction off this. It might be due to the soulless machines that are the newscasters or it might be that I have become so accustomed to internet asshattery that it doesn't phase me anymore. They are the pinnacle of ignorance none the less.
