Schadenfreude [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/schadenfreude], if I had to guess. Universities have studied the process, and found there's an actual chemical result of seeing another's misfortune, and finding some joy in it. The levels differ, and it happens in different levels depending on circumstances. (Seeing a bully get splashed by a car's passing compared to seeing a nun get splashed, etc.)

Depends on the troll, I would think.

I personally think that the Escapist is too quick to label people trolls. I think Someone who just incoherently yells and screams obscenity is not only a troll, but a asshole. On the other hand, you have people who just want to enjoy the internet by doing or saying something totally pointless. A good example would be people who say "First". Most of these people are not trying to be dicks or piss people off, they are just enjoying their own little victory in a way that doesn't actually hurt or insult anybody.

The one form of trolling that I endlessly enjoy is something small(like saying first) and then seeing a hundred posts of people saying, "You're not special for being first," "Stop saying first. Nobody likes you." and just generally watching a forum explode because of a single word that, if any of the people actually didn't care, would not have mattered in the least.

Don't get me wrong! This is just an example of how such a simple, pointless thing can piss people off so much because, in all honesty, I rarely say first.

To get people angry and to upset them. That's why the best course of action is to ignore them. If you respond, then you are only helping them.

Trolling lets people do something they can't do in the "real" world, take the piss without getting punched in the face. Admittedly that isn't always the consequence for openly mocking, insulting or contradicting someone face to face for no apparent reason other than for the laugh, but then trolls are cowards like that. :p

I don't troll much. But when I do, I drink Dosequis... Where was I going? Anyway, I like toying with peoples perceptions.
Think about how awesome it would be if both your parents died (that actually wouldnt be awesome) and you found out that guy was your long lost uncle. I would have sooo many adventures with him.

The safety of anonymity is something convenient to hide behind. Most people don't or can't be "trolls" in real life, but here, they have the freedom to be the stupid unwashed pr!cks they wish they could be in real life.

I think we need to separate the creative trolling from the hurrdurr stuff. The hurrdurr is saying things that are blatantly stupid or false and saying them in a manner that adds no humor to the situation. The creative stuff is necessary from time to time as it reminds people that the internet is not all serious business.

As an example of proper trolling, I'm reminded of the times I've held fake clan tryouts or had my entire team in Rainbow Six be pacifists and just evade the enemy the whole game.

Same reason for bullies. They are bored, and they were dropped when they were born.
This, and the fact that they probably have no love-life, isolate themselves from the community, and engorge themselves with highly fattening foods.

In my experience, people very often see unorthodox, but well reasoned opinions and scream "TROLL". I feel society (and internet society) has become like the Spanish inquisition - people looking for undesirables to be angry at. Imply anything out of the ordinary about how you think and people will assume you're lying to make them angry. I'm aware there are actually people who do just that - but I can't speak for them.

A non-answer to the OP's question, really. But I feel it important that people know that sometimes even extreme opinions are actually the true feelings of the poster, and shouldn't automatically assume it's an attempt to annoy others.

In fact, given the choice between people who'll deliberately try to annoy me or people who will dismiss my opinion because it's unorthodox and extreme, ignoring the reasoning I put forth, I'm not sure which I'd least like to spend eternity in hell with.

People like to voice their own opinions & will adamantly defend their view points. When two or more trolls collide, a small war breaks loose on the forums.
