Anita Sarkeesian has released her second video in her Tropes vs Women in Video Games series.

Any thoughts or criticisms of the issues raised in the video? Let's hear 'em.

Also, as with her first video in the series, it seems once again the comments have been disabled on this new video too.

-Mod edit: Video is back!

I really liked this video. You can see that she did her homework, showing a load of specific scenes for every trope she talked about. She also addressed some issues people had with her last video. I mostly agree with everything she said. I played some of the games shown here. Dishonored is my favorite game of the year, but it doesn't make me protective of it if there is a potential problem, and I agree it does perpetuate that "wife killed, save the girl" trope.

I don't see why people get upset about her, it looks like she is doing a good job. Yeah, it takes her time in getting the episodes out but they are almost half and hour and from that picture that she posted, there is a ton of games she went trough to get the information she needed.

Just so people know, a fair few games are spoiled in this video.

And much like the last one, it may just be me, but I found this video pretty pointless. It did just seem like another "TV Tropes job" to me.

Definitely wasn't worth all the fuss that people caused over it anyway.

Hmm... She has some points. The "wife death, daughter kidnapped" section was pretty telling of just how tired these tropes are, and how desperately the game industry needs a jolt of creativity.

I'm thinking a version of God of War that stars Boudicca getting revenge on the Romans... for the... rape of her daughters hmm...
Dang it, even history can't give me a badass female protagonist that doesn't involve other women being victimized as a motivation!

It is a bit grim and depressing to see half of modern gaming in this video, and I agree that more recent, "mature" treatments of the damsel in distress have been worse in many ways than they were in the 80s and 90s.

What I'm really looking forward to is the third video. Up until now, this project has mostly been "gaming, exposed", and hasn't provided positive examples or offered a solution.

I actually liked this one more than the previous one. I noticed she tried some obvious snark at one point in the video and she still can't pull it off. Just looks wooden and forced.

I'm think we should put together a Kickstarter to buy the woman a new shirt. Maybe a nice jacket. Class it up a little bit.

Can someone just tell me what troops and what games she addresses?
I'd rather be able to make a counter argument (if I feel the need to) without grinding my teeth into dust.
You want to make a counter argument to an argument you don't entertain?

Why?
Either A) Copyright, which is stupid as it's covered under fair use or more likely B) Some asshole false flagged it.

OT: I did manage to watch the video and there was nothing I objected to. In fact a lot of it was a bit of an eye opener, I didn't realise some of those tropes were so prevalent. I can certainly see why they'd be a problem.

Did I miss anything?
Are we allowed to point an laugh at this?
Oh, so it's not just me then. I was worried I did something that broke it.

I'll try and find out what's going on.

I have a mixed feeling about these videos.

First of all I don't agree with her on the part of games having problem portraying women, because some of my favourite games (Baldur's Gate, Guild Wars, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, Final Fantasy X, Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Bioshock, Silent Hill series etc.) include so many well written female characters. Also games that defines the industry in terms of story (many of these titles), don't have the stereotypical depiction of women as Anita depicts (I admit some characters of her analysis IS present though).

All the games she exemplify are medicore or even bad in terms of writing - and most of them haven't struck as "classics" - those who have are done so more by graphics and gameplay rather than story.

Secondly; simply because I as a male gamer, while maybe not as directly as Anita, simply find the "damsel in distress" plot device rather overused, bland, repetitive and uninteresting. It's predictable and boring.

Because I feel this way, I have a hard time agreeing with her, simply because she spends more time examplifying the bad games, while leaving only a few screenshots of games she considers "good" for a short while.

The industry have more aspects too it, and I get her point. Now I just want to see that she actually have a love for video games, and can actually respect the games that goes beyond poor writing (or development).

Okay, the thread I wanted to post in got locked while I was posting so I have to rewrite the entire thing again, argh!

Anyway, here goes *clears throat and drags a soapbox in from somewhere*

Definitely an improvement on the first one, but looks like more of the same still - it looks more like "Part 1 v2.0" than "Part 2" to me. Also not sure where the announcement about looking into "subversions" lost its memo.

Still, a better video, and if this one was the "first"; I think it would have gone over more smoothly. Oh sure, there'd still be the same amount of that mindless "She should die in a fire" junk, but I think there'd be less people saying "Yaknow, she shouldn't have uses just two gaming franchises to make her points and then expected it'd go over smoothly." At least I was saying that last time, and will not be faulting her on that this time. See, one of my peeves with the last one resolved!

A personal peeve, however. "The dark and edgy cocktail of tropes we have discussed in this episode...". I did not see any actual discussion of any cocktails, tropes, or, for that matter, discussion of anything else in this episode. One person doing a presentation for half an hour is simply not a "discussion". "We" implies plural, and "discussion" implies some level of interaction between different speakers. Unless she meant she speaks for someone, then we have plural, but I have no clue what she meant, just what she said and it simply rubs me the wrong way.

Now, an actual discussion? Her discussing this with someone else? More work and organization needed, I suppose, but we'd have an actual discussion to watch. That'd have been interesting.

My first thought after seeing this, though. "Yeah, well, this should have been the first episode."

*the soapbox has collapsed somewhere around "personal peeve", so now has to deal with all those obnoxious splinters. Ugh, nasty things*

PS: Seems to have been taken down from Youtube, OP.

PPS: The DiD plot device is still overused and should be a dead horse trope by now.

It got removed? Now what are we going to have pointless fights over that change nothing and do nothing to influence the dissenting opinion? The forum might just cease to exist.
