I am going to go with Bioshock, Deus Ex, Crysis and System Shock 2. It's the weapons, and the stroyline and just the depth of character in these games. Love it!

There are various things to consider when it comes to great FPS's. Obviously not everyone will agree, but here are some things I think people should consider;

1)Breakthrough Gameplay or Features

I think games in this area are usually "firsts". Wolfenstein, Doom are great examples, but you could also consider things differently. Goldeneye did wonders bringing this genre to consoles and many people first multiplayer FPS sessions started in a room with three guys and a whole lot of Bond. Also, a game like Halo did the same thing, it brought FPS LAN parties to the living room. How many folks sat with their TV's playing FPS's online before Halo 2? Not many.

2)Perfection or Improvement of Gameplay Feature

Many games have successfully built strongly on what has come before. Whether it be a balancing of weapons, multiplayer modes, level design or story telling. Quake 3 and Unreal I think delivered the perfect online multiplayer FPS experience. They weren't the first but they did things well enough for millions of folks to be hooked.

3)Single Player or Multiplayer

Some games pushed the boundaries of single player experiences, System Shock 2, Half Life, etc. Such games turned on their head what people expected of a dumb shooter. Other games delivered unparalleled multiplayer experiences on their platforms, no console game at the time could match Halo 2'S dominance, and some games have people running back every other week like Team Fortress 2.

4)Lastability

Some games can remain fun years after they come out and have a following available that almost anyone can join up and play whenever they want. Look at Counter Strike, from the day it came out up until right now, you would never have a problem finding a game to play, and many still do.

5)Fun

Who cares what a game plays like, as long as you have fun. I'm sure almost every game out there has been enjoyed. Some folks have different tastes. Some titles fade while others remain. If you had fun, you can't have that taken away from you. Whether you are enjoying Quake 2 on the PC or playing GoldenEye 2 on the Gamecube, you are still having fun.

It's fantastic and definitely worth getting over the bad camera control and steep difficulty :D try it!
Wait, what do you mean by bad camera control in a FPS?

There's only one FPS I consider truly great and that is Doom 1. Never played another FPS that I enjoyed as much as Doom.

Counter Strike, Natural Selection and Battlefield 2 are the best FPS games I ever played. I usually prefer to play multiplayer online games and these have the best settings and flow of combat.

pesonally, i dont see why halo 3 is veiwed by everyone as mediocre, maybe its just because all of the fps games around at the moment are all focused on realism and i dont mind that, games like call of duty and half life are very good, but i think halo is something different, it may have been a little over hyped but its still a good game, its got a solid story, fast paced gameplay, the campaign is an improvement over halo 2 and its got one of the best online modes ive ever played and its got 4 player co-op which keeps the campaign fresh.

Not a great game by any means, but I thought Black was cool for what it did with what it had.
I agree 100 %. Given that game was released in 2006, and the Xbox 360 had been released, It was a technological wonder for the PS2 and Xbox 1.

Firstly let me point out that a truly great FPS has to be on a PC and not a console game
As you dont really aim on a console, you need a mouse for that. For all those who said |Halo you are the type of person stook in the matrix whilst Neo and niobi fight to save your ass! You will never know Halo was over hyped, poorly made copy of much better games, (like all ms stuff) it wasnt the first, it wasnt the best, it was just the most advertised to fat yank brats who had shiney new consoles to wank over whilst mom made them more burgers. It has such a following purly as it was most people's first FPS game to which it does deserve credit for the rise of FPS games but its actual graphics, weapons, netcode, balance and playability were many evolutions behind the PC gamers and consoles always will be. When you think that the PS3 has a 10 year life cycle imagine how pants the graphics will be in 8 years time! whilst the PC will have evolved for 8 more years and be lifelike, the cutting edge console graphics of today are dated in 18 months, yet your forced to wait 10 years for an upgrade. Whilst graphics cards on PCs come out newer and faster every 4 months or so.

The one guy who said PORTAL needs a labotomy, great game but not an FPS in anyone else book but yours. Its a puzzle game.

Now to the real list of best FPS's

As a FPS gamer for 20 years ive been there from the start and ive played them all. I also have had a hand in making half the games mentioned here although i wont go into detail. Goldeneye was the first true multiplayer and deserves a mention in any of these lists. ID say overall best ever would be
COD 4the first 3 were pants but they hit the sweet spot with that game. Wether its single or multiplayer, on console or PC, this game is superb all the other games are great at one thing but not great at them all, although without quake, counter-strike series, Unreal series, and the battlefield series it would never of gotten to that status, all of these games were once the greatest but nothing currently compares to cod 4 although COD 5 is looking good in testing.

FEAR was excellent as an actually scarey riviting story, it should of come with a free nappy.
Far cry and crysis for graphically beauty (free tissues)and
BIOSHOCK is the best immersion fantasy world ive ever been in (free LSD).
the cartoon styling of Team fortress games is great as is the olde style of DoD Valve make such top quality stuff.

Goldeneye 007. A classic. I have fond memories of playing this with 3 other friends on the russian base level. In my opinion, the best FPS ever

Half - Life. Played this on the PC and loved it all the way through.

CoD4. I played this for a ridiculous amount of hours. The online portion of the game was extemely addictive.

Far Cry 2. Probably my most recent FPS game. Very good, extemely underrated. Lots to keep you occupied.

Yeah... No.

Firstly, there have been quite a few excellent console fps-es, among others the Metroid Prime series.

And the Halo series was quite good as well. Yes, there have been other fps games who've done the same and probably better as well. However, Bungie has made a series with a terrific storyline and background, if you're willing to do some research for it. Ever tried to find all the terminals in Halo 3? No? Then shut the fuck up. Moreover, the graphics on the Halo games were actually quite good and the games were praised for their playability.

Yes, it isn't the best fps ever, but the Halo series deserve a place in this list because imho.

And really, if the only 'argument' you know is the ad hominem, get the fuck out. We don't need your kind here.

The one guy who said PORTAL needs a labotomy, great game but not an FPS in anyone else book but yours. Its a puzzle game.
It is an fps in my eyes. First person? Check. Shooter? Not bullets, but you're still shooting something, so check, I guess. I'd rather not label this game, but if pressed, I'd go with first person adventure shooter.

OT: I haven't played that many fpses, but I like the ones I have. Among others Half-Life, Republic Commando (I loved the squad based action, and yes, there are better games if you like this), the metroid prime series. And of course Portal as well.
