Firstly let me point out that a truly great FPS has to be on a PC and not a console game
As you dont really aim on a console, you need a mouse for that. For all those who said |Halo you are the type of person stook in the matrix whilst Neo and niobi fight to save your ass! You will never know Halo was over hyped, poorly made copy of much better games, (like all ms stuff) it wasnt the first, it wasnt the best, it was just the most advertised to fat yank brats who had shiney new consoles to wank over whilst mom made them more burgers. It has such a following purly as it was most people's first FPS game to which it does deserve credit for the rise of FPS games but its actual graphics, weapons, netcode, balance and playability were many evolutions behind the PC gamers and consoles always will be. When you think that the PS3 has a 10 year life cycle imagine how pants the graphics will be in 8 years time! whilst the PC will have evolved for 8 more years and be lifelike, the cutting edge console graphics of today are dated in 18 months, yet your forced to wait 10 years for an upgrade. Whilst graphics cards on PCs come out newer and faster every 4 months or so.
So...what you're saying is PC FPS's are far superior over consoles because of...graphics? Maybe it's just me, but I don't really care for systematically setting fire to my money to continuously buy new graphics cards and whatnot. Don't get me wrong, I own both PC and console FPS's and have enjoyed both, but I'll just make that one purchase for a PS3 and save a whole lot more money if the only consequence is a slight graphical downgrade (and in this day and age, how much better are they honestly going to get?).

And using the word "whilst" repeatedly doesn't make your argument smarter or something.

EDIT: And we yanks prefer McDonald's burgers. /sarcasm

Ever tried to find all the terminals in Halo 3? No? Then shut the fuck up. Moreover, the graphics on the Halo games were actually quite good
Oh i seemed to of missed out on that particular gaming nirvana COS ITS RUBBISH!!

that or your the blind fat yank fan boy i was referring to earlier but don't know it and your angry at me for pointing out that truth ...as such your not worth arguing with, cry to your mum when she brings the next shovel full of junk food , she might care what you think...

The one guy who said PORTAL needs a labotomy, great game but not an FPS in anyone else book but yours. Its a puzzle game.

Now to the real list of best FPS's

As a FPS gamer for 20 years ive been there from the start and ive played them all. I also have had a hand in making half the games mentioned here although i wont go into detail. Goldeneye was the first true multiplayer and deserves a mention in any of these lists. ID say overall best ever would be
COD 4the first 3 were pants but they hit the sweet spot with that game. Wether its single or multiplayer, on console or PC, this game is superb all the other games are great at one thing but not great at them all, although without quake, counter-strike series, Unreal series, and the battlefield series it would never of gotten to that status, all of these games were once the greatest but nothing currently compares to cod 4 although COD 5 is looking good in testing.

FEAR was excellent as an actually scarey riviting story, it should of come with a free nappy.
Far cry and crysis for graphically beauty (free tissues)and
BIOSHOCK is the best immersion fantasy world ive ever been in (free LSD).
the cartoon styling of Team fortress games is great as is the olde style of DoD Valve make such top quality stuff.
You, stop talking out your biased arse. FPS does not stand for PC First Person Shooter, it stands for FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. So any game that is first person and involves shooting is viable in this thread.

The Halo series is considered one of the best FPSs because it revolutionised FPS for the console, like Doom revolutionised the PC for first person shooter. Halo 1 was not overhyped either, it was a console release game.

Killzone - Sue me. I loved the original. It had a good length, interesting characters, enemies, fun multiplayer online and off, and awesome weapons to boot. Also, the complete lack of BGM really gave it a realistic feel (thought the character's death animations sure didn't).

To be honest, it is rather hard to actually mess up an FPS. I'd say the last bad FPS I played was Call of Duty 3, and even that was OK. I'm quite enjoying the F.E.A.R series and STALKER SOC at the moment, but Halo, Condemned, Half Life and Doom serieses are probably all favourites.

... might be drawing off topic a bit, but Turok?

Really?

I'd rate the Turok games in my list of worst FPS games. (And probably high on the Worst Overall as well)

What was I missing?

Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, and pretty much every shooter Valve ever made. Also, for non-Valve shooters there's Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory, Battlefield series, Call of Duty (not 3 or World at War, I didn't like either), Crysis, Bioshock, F.E.A.R. and Deus Ex

I've gotta say Max Payne and Bioshock. Not for one particular reason, but both of the games were just so well done. Kinda atmospheric, like it draws you into the game world, especially Max Payne with the film noir cutscenes.
Isn't Max Payne 3rd person?
Haha, good catch. It is indeed, my bad. Everytime I see FPS I just think shooters in general.

The first few Turok games were pretty good for their time.

Anything by Valve. They're my favorite game company and their games include lots of puzzle solving and teamwork. They're all around great games.

I'm not gonna repeat what everyone else has said (yes, the Half-Life games are great, some of my favorite ever), but want to highlight a game series that was mentioned once, but deserves more credit.

No One Lives Forever.

These two games are great. Sharp FPS action with legitimately funny dialogue and characters that has largely yet to be matched by any recent releases. Though they fall to some of the FPS cliches that early 2000's games did (mandatory stealth level), they more than make up for it with a great blend of gameplay. You spend almost as much time gathering intel and acting as a "spy" as you do blasting enemies. It's a pretty unique shooter experience that's awesome. Seriously, you could probably find it online for super cheap too.

Oh, and it's made by the same group who made FEAR. so no excuses now.

Half Life, COD 1(with UO) and 4, FEAR series (minus Expansions), Deus Ex, Turok 2 (we played SO much multiplayer of this back in the day), Crysis, and Republic Commando.

Halo twisted the genre on it's head in a certain segment but everything it did had been done by a few other games before it. It really just got the controls correct, but nothing can beat an FPS with a keyboard and mouse because of the sheer ease of movement and targeting (unassisted mind you). The story (while the backround created for it was rich, that doesn't make the game. If it did every star wars game would be a "fantastic story" game) was stunning in its mediocrity. People ***** because games that come out are somewhat linear, but Halo's environments you'd get lost in because everything looked similar and was for the most part branching linear paths.

Just a few thoughts.
