I don't play it much anymore but Halo did something for console shooters so extremely well that it deserves mention.

CoD 2 & 4 were just fantastic, I have always been a fan of the down sight shooting, as in real life I don't have a tiny crosshair showing me where I'm shooting unless I'm scoped.

And the kicker: Dark Forces. I thought it was better than Doom by a long shot and would love to see a more modern remake of it, even if it was Star Wars themed, it was amazing in its day.

SW: Republic Commando had a great (albeit short) single player campaign, and I LOVED the ability to give orders to my troops after I myself did some dumbass death until they could rez me.

Nice List. Sorry to nitpick, but Deus Ex and System shock 2 are actually ARPGs, and Metroid Prime is a First Person Adventure, but I assume that they count on here anyway.

Mine is just going to have to be GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and L4D. Black was pretty cool too, but it just seemed like a summer blockbuster of a game, mass amounts of explosions then it ends.
What they "are" is conjectural, but for the purposes of discussing their place in video games on the basis on influence I like to classify DE and SS2 as both RPGs and FPS'.

All I can say is half-life.

Think of every aspect of half-life and half life 2 and thats what a good game is.

A game that is not only wonderful, but spawns a slew of wonderful games and mods, while supporting its newfound I.Ps to the fullest extent.

I think there is only so much a FPS can do right before it gets cluttered, The real measure of an FPS is the support and attention of its fans and companies, because there are few things sweeter then always seeing new content and players every time you get on.

Bad Company
Team Fortress 2

Truly great FPS's, they need to be fun and humorous.. And the developers should as with both these games update them regularely..

I also must mention Resistance 2, for their great multiplayer co-op online.. Finally i dont need to play against the 14 year old über gamers, i can join them..

Also, aiming down the sight is a real big plus in my book.. Off the hip aiming is for noobs :p

For the sheer fun of it:

- Team fortress 2
- Left 4 dead
- Unreal tournament 3
- Call of duty 4 (multiplayer)

For the experience (i.e. storytelling and immersion)

- Half-life
- Half-life 2
- STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl/Clear sky (preferably modified)

For addictiveness:

- The entire Battlefield series
- Rainbow six Vegas (both 1 and 2)

Ok, read about half the first page and got bored. Sorry people, i'm not patient.

Deus Ex was one of the best shooters I've played, the fact that you're NOT supposed to kill people made me happy. The RPG element was handled very well and the realism drew you in. The graphics were like looking through glad wrap though...

Left 4 Dead is an obious choice, people have covered that.

Does Fallout 3 count? Did anyone use anything other than guns in that? Well, I enjoyed that because it reminded me of Fallout 1 & 2. Also my character was insane... good fun!

Obligatory mention of everything in the Orange Box.

System Shock 2 was rather awesome, level of character customisation and weapon specialisation prodded buttock!

Maybe i just like FPS-RPGs...

IN MY OPINION: Perfect Dark [1] is the GOD of FPS's
To date it's probably the only shooter game with over 100 [unique] weapons- aside from the pistols and DY357 magnum sets. It's possibly the first to introduce dual wielding [although considering the generation the weapon mixing feature isn't there... as well as the jump.]
The story- although predictable after you discover the Skedar, is still good. The maps [especially the ones you get when you have the power pack] are incredibly fun [and sometimes confusing]. There's no 2-team minimum limit in versus if you DO do teams [for those who just wanna kill]. it's 4-player [YAY 12 total players at once!]. And last but definitely not least; That game STILL has the most types of computer players than most other games- ranging from the pacifist to the kamikaze to the venge-nut to the snipe-happy to the boxing freak to the explosives freak and from the target practice to BETTER than the equivalent to the mod-happy noobs with god mode and noclip on. ^_^ Seriously. the Darksims are at LEAST the equivalent to this gen's current FPS master.

The Metroid Primes, Bioshock, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, System Shock 2, TF2, Halo 1-3 and Turok 2.

All these games excel in their aims, and have all delighted me in one way or another. The most important thing in an FPS is the fun factor of blowing an enemy away - if a game lacks that vital component then it won't be very good. Who can forget getting the sniper rifle on Dam on GoldenEye? The Cerebral Bore? Pickng someone off miles away with the FarSight?

I couldn't pick a single favourite out of these games, because they were all so different, set out to do different things an dispel perfectly the myth that all FPS' are the same.

Here's another addition: Star Wars Battlefront 2. Sure you get the option of going between first and third person [it really is an FPS if you don't wanna play third person]. Maybe not for the campaign [or lack thereof], but it's more like an infantry/vehicle war than many of the other games mentioned. Your guy is just like the rest other than the fact that you can command them, and you'd normally forget... so you'd be as good [or bad] as any other npc unless you had the minimap up the entire time [despite skill].
[and there's no mandatory jedi to kick your ass in every level like in the first game]

What, in everyone's opinions, are some truly great FPS's? What makes a FPS great? Is it the weapon selection, the enemies, the flow of combat, the setting, or something else?
Half Life 2, Halo 1-3, Killzone 2, F.E.A.R. 2, Call of Duty 4, Resistance 2. To me, something just needs to be fun and engaging. All of those are fun as hell.
I can't beat that, I have just one addition, Resistance 1, why'd you leave it out?
Because Resistance 2 did everything Resistance 2 did, but better. I didn't see the need to include and its sequel.

I love when the character has a true feeling of weight behind them, like in Chronicles of Riddick or The Darkness. Plus, the up-close kill animations were great in both.
On another aspect, an easily-navigated map is great to have.
I'd say my top 5 would be...
-COD4
-Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
-Crysis Warhead
-Portal
-Halo

A truly great fps for me must be fun, enjoyable, replayable, have solid gameplay and have at least one part that just involves mindless shooty fun. I dont know if this counts but i really enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick escape from butcher bay. This is mostly for the gameplay and the environments but i thought the story was decent too.

As for my greatest fps games are any thing by valve (obviously), Halo 1 to 3, CoD 4, CnC renegade (mindless shooty fun), AvP 2, the Timesplitters series (quantum leap anyone?), Doom,Doom 3 and rainbow six vegas.

Well, my favourite shooters are:
-Halo 1-3
-Halflife 1-2 (alle of the episodes released so far)
-Timesplitters 1-3
-Unreal Tournament (like all of them)

Id say its difficult saying what definitively makes an FPS great
