I don't remember many details about this game, as I did not play it much.

When I was much younger, I used to rent SNES games quite often. Back then, I wasn't really into the whole turn based RPG deal, I rented it thinking it might play a bit like Zelda, but gave up on it after only a short time.

I don't know why I started thinking about it lately, but I can recall a few details (hopefully they are accurate).

The beginning of the game takes place in some kind of jail/dungeon/prison. The player character meets an older individual within this prison and the two join together to try to get out or something.
The older character refers to the players character as 'Kid', and the player character is not pleased with this.

Once they're out, there's some illness that they must address... either for one of themselves, or for another character (I don't recall). And they must seek out some fabled 'Elixir'.

That's about all I've got. Not much to go on, I'm sure.

If this rings any bells, let me know.
Thanks :p

Gamefaqs is nice enough to subdivide games by platform and by genre. So your mystery game is almost certainly on this list of SNES RPGs [http://www.gamefaqs.com/snes/list-48]. Maybe just perusing the titles will remind you of something?

I will recommend Bahamut lagoon, some of the best graphics of the era, one of the last things SquareEnix produced for the SNES and it shows. it is very very well done, The story isn't TOO compelling but it honestly gets the job done and if you enjoy somewhat sappy love stories is great. The game plays like a combination of fire emblem and the traditional 4 man party RPG. along with that you got some Pokemon mixed in with the pet system and the fact that your dragons can evolve into other creatures changing their damage dealing capabilities and strengths. It also has really catchy music and a nice feature that allows you to play the game over with the same file basically allowing you to plow through some of the harder challenges that you had to leave behind due to their difficulty and your unwillingness to grind.

It sounds a bit like Illusion of Gaia

Illusion has a longuish segment in the hometown before the protagonist gets jailed. Wasn't it Brandish which starts directly in a prison?

A few things that pleasantly surprised me in said sappy love story were

First, The fact that the protagonist actually lose the love triangle between himself, Yoyo and the general Palpaleos: what looked like at first a foregone conclusion was turned on its head.
Second, the fact that the plot did not pull the easy "I switched my allegiance because of luuuuuuuve" subplot: Yoyo remains true to her country despite the fact that she loves an officer from the empire which invaded her homeland, and Palpaleos remains loyal to his own country: joining the protagonist's team only because his fatally wounded emperor urged him to not swear fealty to the murderous war criminal who was about to succeed him and coming back to his homeland after the final battle despite knowing that giving himself to his countrymen eager for a scapegoat to blame for their military defeat is a death sentence: these were unexpected turns of the story that remained coherent with the game's established backstory and the characters' personalities
