I've never played any of the Valve games, but my guess is that anyone who's played Portal will immediately mention the Companion Cube.
I can't stand that peice of wasted plastic. I didn't see a "Memorable character," or "A Duetagonist," I just saw a box. A BOX. People nowadays are entertained by paint drying.

Excuse me, but what exactly are you talking about?
I didn't make it too clear. The box you enter text in with "Preview" and "Post" underneath it. I somehow never noticed.

TBH I grew overly attached to my antlion army in Hl2 and never cared much for the resistance members who didn't have names. (anyone who's not dr. klein, vance, alyx, mossman, or barney). I was genuinely distraught when I saw the poor things run headlong into turrets in nova prospekt.

I was quite sad, actually when I could no longer summon them. Their idle animations are extremely endearing when they're not trying to eat your face off.

Doesn't understand irony.

Rosetta: yes that was the initial idea, because play-testers kept leaving the regular cube behind, but the test chamber was re-imagined as an ironic play on GLaDOS's meek understanding of humans, and the ridiculousness of loving a box.

People just ran with the joke, apparently some people don't understand irony. see:above.

The lovefist limo in Vice City. First time I do that mission in a playthrough, BAM, right into a garage. Style is very important when you are killing drug lords...

i treated the bots in bioshock the same way, the plasmid that allowed you to name them made me very happy.

i tend to get attached to my basic pistol, the one that becomes totally useless after 20min.
i just really like handguns.
yeah, i tend to hold on to the pistol. especially in games like halo or bulletstorm when it isnt completely useless. rifles are all well and good, but that one handed cannon... just something about the way it goes BOOM with a good recoil and someone's head exploding just... yeah. gotta love it.

I knew what you meant, but...how can you resize it?

I was really pissed when it seemed like SE forgot all about the Adventure Fellow NPCs when they started raising the level caps in FFXI.

God I hate that bloody cube purely because of the sheer amount of people who treat it like it's the greatest thing ever. It's a piece of inanimate metal people!!
You took my good idea! And my angry idea! Um...thinking...Mercenaries 2. Whenever I blow up a car, I get upset, then tell Ewan to bring me another.

Um....yes. The fact that it's just a cube with a heart painted on it is what makes it funny. It betrays GLaDOS' complete incomprehension of human emotion and attachment. One insane guy runs around with a companion cube on his back and starts talking to it, and she assumes that Chell (and by extension every human) will act the same way.

that thing killed me 3 bloody times, I couldn't wait to kill it.

OT: yes defiantly, NPCs which you assign personality to and follow you through the game carry a lot more emotional value (except the gnome because when you die it is just standing there staring into to your dead eyes, it IS EVIL I TELL YOU EVIL!).
Oh, you mean the alien that acts as a kick-arse gun? Yeah, I love that thing for how much it can kill stuff

It kind of helps that you have proper control of the turret. The people in the 'follow freeman' part of the game are just annoying, particularly while trying to navigate small corridors.

Personally I?m still morning the loss of my antlions, best pets ever. Also the squidgy thing you use to control them is therapeutic, the noise it makes is just amazing.

So in Half Life 2, in the Nova Prospekt Mission, I got hold of these automated turrets to defend the area. So when I had finished up with that area, I grabbd one and took it with me through the rest of the level, meaning I had an extra turret to use in an encounter. I grew pretty fond of that turret, even naming it (Its Trent btw). When I lost it at the end of the level, I was genuinely sad.

After finishing the game today, I realised something. I let my allies die without a care, even though there had been a lot of work done to make them seem individual, id walk around messing with peoples furniture during important scenes, not even bothering to remember who they were, and yet, I cared about a mass produced piece of machinery that mostly tries to kill me.

So, have you ever actually cared for an object or characterless npc, simply because of the personality you assinged to them?
Huh, I never thought of taking a turret with me but that actually sounds like a great idea. But I can understand getting torn up about it. You cared for that turret, transported it from place to place, made sure it was still standing. In return, it shot your enemies and watched your back.

Man, I really wish I had had a friendly turret throughout a Portal-esque game. I would be a lot more sad about burning that Companion Cube if it had killed a few of those turrets.

YES! I sometimes whip it out in subsequent levels just to play with, and no I'm not going to try to edit that sentence to remove the innuendo.

In Halo 2, shotgun-wielding marines were badass. I named one Steve, and another Bob, and they were more badass than the Master Chief. Until they died...
