The thing is, Torchwood was created as a show to cash in and ride on the coattails of Doctor Who.
It was created by Russell T. Davies, former lead writer of the new Doctor Who series, and sworn enemy of Doctor Who fans everywhere.
It is obvious to see that it is a cash in, because it was spun-off of several episodes that Davies wrote for Doctor Who, Tooth and Claw was the episode where the organization was founded.
It had potential, but of course since Davies was at the helm, it was deliberately rammed into an iceberg. Though I bet the only reason Davies created the show was to parade around the bi-sexual antics of Captain Jack. The actual main part of the show, the aliens and whatnot, felt like a side story to be small fillers to go with the relationship crap. It's a terrible formula that is an affront Science Fiction. It is a sad trend I am seeing in Sci-Fi, see Stargate Universe among other things non-Stagate that it copies.
With how messed up Davies's thought processes are, I wouldn't be surprised if he thought it was going to be as good or better than Doctor Who. Heck the title of the show is and anagram. Rearrange Torchwood = Doctor Who.
I mean, we are talking about the moron who comes in on an age old show, Doctor Who, and basically flips the bird at fans and says, "Screw you, canon doesn't matter, I can write my own canon since I have control of the show." He has this weird idea that fans of anything are stupid, that people should just accept how shows go and not care about what the people in control do with them. What he sounds like is a bad writer in denial. The mindset of, "If people don't like what I am doing, obviously there is something wrong with the people, because I believe I am untouchable."
But, now with the recent news that Davies is giving up on writing "Sci-Fi", we can all breathe a sigh of relief.
