Lost. Lost. Lost. Lost. Lost. Lost. Lost! Lost! Lost! LOST! LOST! LOST! LOST! LOST! LOST!
In case you haven't figured out...I hate Lost. I really hate it with a burning passion. And WHY do I hate it? It's the time-honored excuse of "it makes no fucking sense". Really, it doesn't. I'm honestly convinced that they intended it as a proper "shipwreck" drama, but then the main writer got high and worked in evil smoke and a polar bear, so everyone just went "fuck it" and ran with it, producing the stupidest work of "we pulled it out of our ass!" fiction ever conceived by humanity.
Plus if you make a show this pointlessly complicated and introduce about 2 crucial plot points per episode, but never explain any of them, you're totally isolating new viewers. I get that ALL shows have character arcs and everything, but they're still accessable. I picked up Battlestar Galactica (widely heralded as being weird to newcomers) in Series 3 and still followed it fine until I picked up the past series on DVD to catch up.
But with Lost...half-way through Series 1 I finally bothered to try watching it and was already incapable of following it! I abandoned it thoroughly, then wound up living with 3 big fans of it last year, just when it was starting to end. Regularly I'd sit there while it was on, regularly thinking "what? who? why? when? how?" throughout every episode I saw.
And the fans of annoy me! They approach it with "it's so deep and intelligent." No it isn't! It's the product of a bunch of guys with too big a budget sitting around huffing paint thinner then writing down whatever they think of at the time, and a bunch of network 'yes men' who haven't got the balls to say "no guys, sorry but this is shit and it makes no sense."
And fyi 95% of Lost fans: BEING POINTLESSLY COMPLICATED AND OCCASIONALLY THROWING IN QUASI-RELIGIOUS IDEALS FOR NO REASON DOESN'T MAKE YOUR SHOW DEEP OR INTELLIGENT, IT MAKES IT STUPID, RETARDED AND NONSENSICAL!!!
Oh, and time travel is never a good idea, particularly when a show doesn't even need it to happen!
Here's an idea: "A band of airplane survivors are stranded on a mysterious island after a plane crash. They find themselves hunted by a mysterious force. While being pursued, they meet more survivors. Together, they must survive, escape, and stop what is hunting them." THAT is a show I'd watch! What the Lost writers have created is just pants-on-head retarded.
