You're kind of stereotyping just asking the ladies, some guys on the Escapist like Twilight (Trivun). But I haven't seen the movie, just read the first book.
Thanks for that

I actually came to the thread because I was worried it would turn into an 'OMG I HATE TWILIGHT LULZ!!!1' sort of thing, but I was pleasantly surprised

As it happens other guys here like Twilight as well, not just me. I'm simply more outspoken against the Hate Wagon (for all things, not just Twilight, incidentally).

hmm Trivun likes twilight, i'm gonna have to take his man card away.
You'll have to find me first...
Anyway, basically I'm just pleased that for once in a Twilight thread people are actually giving, for the most part, informed opinions instead of jumping on the wagon. I read all of the books and I liked them, but even so I could still see the gaping plot holes and problems with the writing. Characters weren't as well developed as I'd like, the only characters I actually truly liked were Alice and Jasper, and the others were pretty much just there as filler and as 'Mary Sue' and so on. However, I still enjoyed reading them, just like I enjoy Dan Brown - it's entertaining. If I want to read a well written book, a proper work of literature, then I'll simply pick up my Discworld books or anything from Ian Irvine, or anything that comes under Gothic Horror. For a brief release though, Twilight is pretty good.
As for the film, I actually preferred it to the book. I felt that the actors did quite well given their source text. They couldn't have made the characters of Twilight appear like brilliantly devised characters and make us sympathise as much as you want to with the film, but that's down to the limited nature of the source material. They still did a damn good job, and as an amateur film-maker myself, I could see the brilliance in the filming styles used and it was pretty clear that Catherine Hardwicke (director) had tried to turn a mediocre book into a decent film. The source was all that let them down. Anyone who's seen any other film or TV series starring any of the Twilight actors will know already that they're great actors, it's simply down to the book. But the main problem with Twilight isn't any of this, it's the screaming fangirls. Despite liking Twilight I absolutely hate the screaming fangirls with a passion, just not as much as the haters riding their wagon along the road of hate. As it were.
With regards to New Moon, I felt that the book wasn't quite as good as Twilight for the bulk, but it did surprisingly end up well written (Shock! Horror!) near the end. Most of it is pretty much Bella moping because Edward's buggered off to Italy, and then werewolf Jacob Black stalking her and sexually harassing her (she's too much of a mopey idiot in this one to realise. And I say this despite not actually minding her normally...). Near the end she goes with Alice to Italy to 'save' Edward from suicide (huh?) and ends up back together with him, and that's pretty much the only really interesting part. However, given the approach to the film of Twilight, I reckon they may just be able to surprise us and come up with something that's half decent for most of the film rather than just at the end, with New Moon. I may be wrong, but I'll have a look when it comes out and then make a fair judgement then.
