I don't think it's so much that the hug itself is gay, as the way you brought it up put too much emphasis on it for him, as a straight man, to be entirely comfortable with it. When it comes to physical contact, generally men are a lot more awkward around each other, possibly for exactly this reason.

Basically, there are situations where a Brohug is totally acceptable and even poignant where he probably wouldn't object at all. This was not one of them.

I sometimes do the "bro shoulder and handshake hug". But I never hug a guy, nor do I kiss them on the cheek (which is the norm here in Belgium). Don't think it's gay though, I was just raised with handshakes between men, and kisses on the cheek for women. Cultural reasons I guess.

Anybody who thinks that a MAN HUG is gay is either homophobic, or in denial about their own sexuality... Probably the latter.

Of course, a requirement of the MAN HUG is that the two MEN pat each other on the back, thus confirming to onlookers that it is a MAN HUG and they're just friends.

Joking aside, I think if any man has a problem with hugging another man, chances are good that they're simply insecure. People would argue that it's no longer the case, but I think there is still societal pressure on men to be MANLY and stoic and not express any emotions. If they have a problem with hugging it's probably because they haven't been able to come to terms with their own emotions.

For the record, I hug my friends all the time. Especially when I'm drunk.

What's up with the maturity level of your friend who thinks that hugging is gay? Hell, I know incredibly homophobic people who will hug their male friends with no reservations whatsoever. Sounds to me like your friend is preoccupied with expressing that he absolutely, positively is not gay. This doesn't necessarily mean that he is, but it may indicate he has issues with the wimmens. I just do it in a manly way - like a bear hug or with back slaps and then it seems OK, even to onlookers. To be honest, however, it's only like one of my mates who I do hug. Being exclusively attracted to members of the same sex makes you gay. Hugs have nothing to do with it.
