Yup, being a Grammar Nazi as well, people seem to type incorrectly 80 percent of the time here. [sup]And why does the Google Chrome I just installed keep seeing english words as errors?[/sup]

And from personal experience, people hate to get corrected every single time they misspell a word. But hey, they asked me for help.
Maybe change the settings from English (US) to English (UK) or vice-versa?

Okay, I just recently joined The Escapist not to long ago and I've noticed an epidemic. Why can't people spell correctly?
Many members of the community are still young, others are not native speakers. Regardless of the reason, a spell-checker can work wonders for anyone, and we highly recommend them to anyone who wants to be taken serious here.

That's it though, if someone is a poor speller but has something interesting to say we're not going to crucify him. We'll probably send him a friendly PM about where to get a spell-checker. This is a forum first, and that means we have to accommodate for people of all walks of life.
Non-native English forum members may have a hard time with grammar, but I think that is understandable. Perhaps by displaying the flag of the forum member below the avatar would easily identify such forum users so they are spared the brunt of online criticism (and a gentle PM to indicate the proper usage perhaps).

I think that as long as a conscious effort is made to correct the spelling the odd error here or there is acceptable. Even senior editors from leading newspapers, faced with deadlines, fail to capture some spelling or grammatical inconsistencies from time to time.

To err is human, to forgive divine.

I unconsciously check for grammar and spelling mistakes when I read anything, and sometimes, I'm glad they're there, because when someone sends me a scathing message, I can say "you spelled this, this, and this incorrectly". It's just like what Yahtzee did during the mailbag showdown.

Correcting people's mistakes on the Internet makes me feel like a fussy know-it-all, but correct grammar and spelling (within reasonable boundaries) is an important part of a text-based community. And I hate people who treat an Internet forum (chat rooms I am more indifferent to, considering the different speed of replying) like their own personal text-messaging service.

Besides, being a grammar Nazi gives off the smug, self-congratulating feeling of "I'm better than you and the whole world ought to know it", which can be very satisfying.

Well I normally use proper grammar, but I have noticed in my past few posts I have some type which isn't a misspelled word, but just not the word I meant to type. Things like that are very annoying for me to catch as even if I reread my post I see what I want to see, not what is necessarily there.

I just wish people would learn how to spell. I also hate when people use the "text speak" in conversations, in person. I just want to strangle them.
Like when people physically say "LOL". Thats really annoying...

Have we really become so serious that it's become feasible to write off people's opinions based on their spelling capability? People, you are on the internet. Loosen up, will you?

If the post is completely unintelligible due to spelling / grammatical errors then yes. If, however it is just a couple of mistakes such that the meaning of the post is still clear, then no. Although picking out spelling errors is a lot easier than actually refuting any of the points made in the post...

I am reminded of a Simpsons episode I watched last night:
Marge: "Oh Homer, it's so easy to criticize"
Homer: "And fun too!"

Homer, in that case, was correct.

I'm gonna guess that you left that misspelling of 'Marge' in there on purpose...

Actually, it was a mage who told him. He was having an acid trip.

Which episode was this? I can't remember an episode where Homer took acid... (and I'm not entirely sure whether you're being sarcastic...)
Edit: Ahh, you fixed it. Oh well, nothing to see here...

*Sigh* I know this website and it's members pride themselves with having good vocabulary and good grammar, but can we go two weeks without a thread stating the impending doom of the website just because some people have had some grammatical mistakes in their posts. [/rant.]

On topic, I am only a grammar Nazi to myself, I try to use proper grammar as often as possible, sometimes a typo or two slip by me, after I post but I usually go back and re-edit the post to remove the typos, that isn't to say that I have good punctuation, normally I overuse the comma somewhat, and besides the apostrophe, period, and question mark I don't really bother with the rest of them unless I'm forced to.

I do not however try to correct other members spelling, how they spell is their own business, if I can't read the post then I just skip it,I don't go on a tirade berating the poor guy just because he made a typo on commonly misspelled words, although, since I joined back in September there hasn't been a single post I haven't been able to coherently read from any other member new or old.

Thread Topic:It really depends, people can accidently type something in and there is no real warning about it. I tend to overuse the edit post button over small gaffs (I'm a neat freak).
If someone uses nothing but txt speak I tend to ignore it, but if it's doesn't take up the whole thing (Btw, Imo, & etc), I don't feel like it takes away anything.
Secondly, I find forum posting as good practice for improving grammar.
(Now count all my mistakes [I see 6])
