The real significance of the artical is that the laser can replicate conditions that only exist within stars, supernovas, and other extreame conditions bringing us one large step closer to nuclear fusion. I just spent 3+ hours reading about nuclear reactions the other day so all this is fresh in my head.

Been around for a little while the problem is practicality. We can't just hook up our ZPMs and attack the wraith. The power requirement would be enormous and something we just don't have at this point in time in a small size. In large sizes we can supply plenty but we would have to strap 3 foot tall backpacks to our backs to fire our lasers (blaah)

What this has to do with countering nuclear missiles I do not know. You use it to test nuclear armaments to see if they will still perform as designed decades after their production.

And the fusion thing is a brilliant plan where a bunch of physists got drunk and said "hey, what if we focused the output of several lasers at a single point?"

we will see if this works, but this laser is not designed to shoot down nuclear weapons.

I don't think anybody has actually read the article at all lol! As usual the thread has been derailed by pointless sci-fi speculation and discussion about starwars *facepalm*. I suppose I shouldn't exactly be surprised that everybody here thinks 'laser gun' when ever they hear the word 'laser', its a geeks right to dream.

As for fusion...getting it going isn't really the problem, collecting the energy is.
