Now to mount one on the head of a shark.
We need some firkin sharks with some firkin lasers beams on their heads.

Im realy hoping this isn't going to drag the entire world into WW3, Its bad enough in Australia with low jobs etc, last I want is bombs landing in my backyard (or shrapnel).

The laser. And we shall call it 'skynet'.

Grab yon cricket bat, smack the suckers to New Zealand as they fall.

A link would be cool, if I leave the escapist website too long (more than 2 seconds) I start detoxing.

EDIT: Oh wow I'm so glad money is going towards this rather useless technology instead of my education...
oh yea because a nuke landing in your back yard is less of a threat to your education

stop whining, you hate school anyway

The real significance of the artical is that the laser can replicate conditions that only exist within stars, supernovas, and other extreame conditions bringing us one large step closer to nuclear fusion. I just spent 3+ hours reading about nuclear reactions the other day so all this is fresh in my head.

P.S.

lasers are old, now its all about nuclear lasers(Gamma of course, none of that pussy alpha or beta)!
C'mon, alpha and beta is where it's at!

How can you trust an electromagnetic form of energy?

Didn't the UN ban the use of laser weaponry?

Did America just say "F U" to the UN on this part here?

Given that it's for the use of nuclear fusion, that might not be in violation of that agreement.

Been around for a little while the problem is practicality. We can't just hook up our ZPMs and attack the wraith. The power requirement would be enormous and something we just don't have at this point in time in a small size. In large sizes we can supply plenty but we would have to strap 3 foot tall backpacks to our backs to fire our lasers (blaah)
You're absolutely right.

First we have to help the Asgard defeat the Replicators, and we have to kill the Goa'uld.

Then we can tackle the Wraith.
Of course how could I forget :D
Stop with the obscure Stargate references already

I love the incredible stupidity of Californian legislatives. Instead of adding money to something that's actually practical (like fucking education), they decide to throw money onto something incredibly pointless. Debate all you want, is there really a need for a superlaser that can burn at the heat of the sun?

The UN are a bunch of panzies with their thumbs up their asses, and have been for the past 30 years. Nobody cares what they have to say because they do nothing except whine when someone breaks one of their rules.

America's new "Super Laser", designed to counter nuclear missiles
The Damn Article said:
The National Ignition Facility's main purpose is to serve as a tool for gauging the reliability and safety of the US nuclear weapons arsenal but scientists say it could deliver breakthroughs in safe fusion power.
What this has to do with countering nuclear missiles I do not know. You use it to test nuclear armaments to see if they will still perform as designed decades after their production.

And the fusion thing is a brilliant plan where a bunch of physists got drunk and said "hey, what if we focused the output of several lasers at a single point?"

"Several? MORE LIKE 192!!!! THOUSAND!!!!"

we will see if this works, but this laser is not designed to shoot down nuclear weapons.

you are. taxes are fun.
I don't think anybody has actually read the article at all lol! As usual the thread has been derailed by pointless sci-fi speculation and discussion about starwars *facepalm*. I suppose I shouldn't exactly be surprised that everybody here thinks 'laser gun' when ever they hear the word 'laser', its a geeks right to dream.

As for fusion...getting it going isn't really the problem, collecting the energy is.
