Ubisoft Putting Beyond Good & Evil 2 On Hold?

Ubisoft seems to have abandoned work on the sequel to Beyond Good & Evil, according to word out of Gamescom that the title is "on hold for now."

A few weeks ago I cautioned [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93395-Dont-Get-Your-Hopes-Up-For-Beyond-Good-Evil-2-Yet] you guys not to get your hopes up for anything Beyond Good & Evil 2, as the future of the title looked uncertain after it was a no-show at E3 and Ubisoft made remarks that were equivocal about the franchise's future. Now it seems that the worst has come true as a report from Gamersyde has it that work on the title has been effectively halted for the time being.

"I got confirmation at Cologne's Gamescom that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is on hold for now," Gamersyde's Colin Solal Cardo wrote [http://twitter.com/colinsco/status/3458024544] in a Twitter update. "No idea if it's def or temporary but it sucks."

It does suck, but it's not altogether surprising. "Whether or not it comes out remains to be seen anyway, but we didn't want to abandon that IP because it has a cache and authenticity about it," Ubisoft's Laurent Detoc said last month. "There's something very pure about that game and it's too bad that we were not able to build it as an IP at the time."

Too bad that they're not able to build it as an IP at this time, either, apparently. Detoc had said that there was a team that has "been working on some Beyond Good and Evil stuff," but whether or not a game would actually come of it remained to be seen. For now, it seems, there won't be one.

I've dropped a line at Ubisoft to find out what's going on.

The first one did not sell well at all. I too would be afraid of investing in something awesome when you know the real money comes from some much easier to make because it's more mindless crap.

I would love to see Beyond Good & Evil 2 released and for it to actualy do well if it's truly as good as the first.

Having just bought the game off steam and finishing it, I can say it was nothing short of brilliant. And after that ending, had me going WTF!

Please Ubisoft, I know the first one didn't sell well, but thats because it was released during the busy holiday season and got pushed under by other big names.

This one can be a success, and with the whole internet basically advertising how fucking amazing the first one is, the second one will sell well. Just release it anywhere from March to August, that will allow it to truly shine.

Man, this is the worst news i've heard in a long time... I'm going to have to buy it off steam now, as my PS2 version is in another country

It's always sad to see a game getting benched, but then again...

At the risk of getting flamed, I just don't understand why there was so much hype about the original. Sure it had very polished graphics, nice sounds, a great storyline and memorable characters... but the gameplay was so repetitive and kind of bland to start with. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a nice adventure, but I can't help but think that it was severly overhyped.

I would have liked a sequel for sure, but I certainly won't lose sleep over not getting one.
