You can only play one video game console again for the rest of your life. No personal computers or hybrid consoles that can play more than one. You can only pick one console, from any generation. What would you pick and why?

Sorry. If I have to play only on one console, I prefer to not play at all.

PS2. Actually scratch that, PS3 or PS4. Whichever gets me the most exclusives/remastered games.

I don't believe that at all.

Really? As a gamer you'd choose not to play anything at all?

Switch obviously
It's got Breath of the Wild, will have Dark Souls, and probably has some other games, too. I guess

I could play those two games for the next 3 years and be satisfied, plus the thing is portable so if I want to take it somewhere or my significant other wants to watch TV, or if i want to watch a football game and play Zelda for the hour between football plays I can do so

Really a no brainer

After thinking about it, I'd actually have to go with PS4, no joke. PS2 is probably the best PlayStation system but some of those games have aged and I'm not fan of some of the bigger genres back then. SNES would probably be next but I'd be limited to basically just 2D games. But back to PS4, gaming has reached a really good period right now after the extreme homogeneity of last-gen and the start of this gen. Not only does PS4 have standard console games you'd expect along with some great exclusives but it has quite a selection of last-gen games via remasters (if only Bayonetta and Vanquish were on PS4) while also having just about every single game that would normally be PC exclusive in any past gen like Divinity Original Sin, Sexy Brutale, Shadow Tactics, Cities: Skylines, and so many more.

None, I wouldn't bother with games if it weren't for PC. It's a utility machine that also plays games.

I suppose maybe PS2 so I could maybe play the odd old Playstation game with mates for nostalgia purposes but be able to play PS2 games as well, but honestly, I doubt it would ever get used.

The thing that can really keep me busy for a long time is a strategy games. Consoles ain't got no europa universalis or crusader kinds, no civ (the console versions don't count), no xcom 2. Advance wars DS is pretty good. I might also want something that has a lot of pokemon, if handhelds count, so maybe 3ds. That even has rayman 3D. Or I could go with my xbox 360 and all of my halo, cod and geometry wars. Thing is, I don't really know. I've never had any playstations so I couldn't really compare them to what I have. I've had a gameboy advance and like 4 games on it and the only nonhandheld console that I owned was an xbox 360. I now have a 3ds. Friends of mine have a lot of nintendo stuff and that's nice but I don't really know enough about that either.

Can't I just pick a PC anyway? If not, the only console I ever actually owned besides handhelds was the xbox 360 so that is apparently the choice I would make.

I like my switch at the moment. And there's no real means to replace it as the portable gaming go to oyher than the 3DS. If I can't say PC, I will say Switch. As I can't imagine I'll be travelling *less* over thr next 4 years.

Just give me a decent browser option, damnit.

Or perhaps a hypothetical Switch 2.0 with better wi-fi connectivity.

Nintendo 64 Master race.

That's mostly my childhood talking, it has all of my favorite games from being a kid. While there may be better consoles, my personal connection to the 64 is just too strong.

I don't see Sony going backwards compatible by 10. Maybe 14.

OT: No console has ever been good enough to fit this bill. I haven't bought a console in a decade, and I only bought a Switch to play with my daughter. I'd only pick switch becuase it has some backwards compatibility and recency bias

Well to be fair it took almost a year post launch to get fully compatible. At launch it was fully backwards compatible with PS9 games, and PS8 games were a monthly subscription.

All the other consoles and games were added piecemeal as purchased content, $5.99 for all SNES games, $14.99 for the full Xbox Global games, etc...

Consoles ONLY??
Might as well not bother playing games then.

Could possibly chose the NES 8-bit for nostalgia.
Not that it will be used all that often. Once a blue moon maybe.
More books will be read.

Nah, PC is where it's at.

Since there's no stipulation against a specific version of a console, you could go with the original 60GB Phat PS3. That's the one that has the full PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility i.e. three complete libraries on one console. And if the small hdd capacity bothers you, you can always replace it with a bigger one.

It would be my choice.

I understand PC has to be off the table for discussion... its obviously the best choice and there would be no reason for the question to even be asked.

As far as console... it would have to be a Nintendo product. As it would need to last the rest of my life that rules out a PS or Xbox product as they will only last 1 to 5 years or so and then brick. Dreamcast and Genesis were pretty hearty hardware... but not enough software to entice me.

So between the nes consoles... I'll rule out WII U straight away. I'll rule out Switch and Wii as the gimmicky nature of the hardware means it would be hard to fix if it breaks. My Gamecube has held up to 15 years of off an on use, but I'd guess the laser will go bad at some point otherwise it would be an good choice...

It is a tough choice between SNES and 64, but I'd have to go with N64. I'd have Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, No Mercy, Vigilante 8, Majora's Mask, OoT... so many others. Yeah the stick wears out, but I've had decent success repairing them myself. So, N64.
