I, like a very few people, hate games that objectify women. Now of course, pretending to be a near-perfect person (be it a man who is strong, burly and rips apart space raptors as an early morning workout, or a woman with a cute face, a gorgeous, almost impossibly curvy body, and with giant melons straped onto her chest, held on by the slivers of cloth the game calls clothes) in a game can be fun, but sometimes it gets to be a little bit much when the whole premise of the game is to stare at the character's inhuman jubblies the whole time...I'm looking at you DoA and Tomb Raider Series...

This is when the idea that women as the main character tends to become more of a way to show off boob physics, than to create a character that's intriguing, interesting, and fun to relate to. Now there is and island in the sea of boobies and swimsuits that make up the majority of female characters in video games. Women like Samus, Alyx, or Jade live on this island. Sadly, they tend to be in games that are overlooked by today's gamer crowd, mostly because they aren't showing off enough skin, or are just not appealing enough, but there are some people (such as myself) who like characters like this. Yeah sure Nintendo has begun to show off Samus' Zero Suit a lot more these days, but before that, she was always our Power Suit clad heroine who only took off her clothes when she died (and was then probably eaten and/or raped by Space Pirates).

I for one, don't find the lack of actual gameplay, for the up in physics on how each individual cell that makes up a video game woman's breasts reacts when she so much as breathes in deeply to be very promising. I'd prefer a high standard of character development, gameplay, and overall fun in games over watching some tramp in almost nothing jump around for hours, watching as he chest almost falls out of the clothes, or general lack thereof, she is wearing. Although, this coming from a flat chested woman, as myself may sound more of a jealousy rant, than an actual opinion, I still stand by my statement, and would like to see the rise in actual fun, thrilling gameplay, over the rise in more realistic graphics.

Now, if you're still reading this post, and haven't exited out of the window believing this to be the rant of a girl on her period, who isn't well endowed, and/or is jealous of all the "video game hotties," then on to the topic of this thread. There are lots of Video Game Babes, and many fanboys who's fetishes are probably fed by them. If you're looking for a more well-developed-character, interesting, fun babe, then look at women like Alyx, or Samus. If you're looking for a more eye pleaseing babe in the term of boobies and almost no clothes, go have fun with your Lara Croft or just put in Dead or Alive Beach Vollyball and take your pick.

Ahem.
So... We can all pretty much agree that in large, the video game industry is not very good in creating female characters. They have a tendect to make those a mere vessel for a physics defying pair of tits so that they could have a physics defying pair of tits on the game box' cover.

We are gamers. We like video games. Some of us are female. All of us are about four times as intelligent as the average game designer these days.

So... With this in mind, how do you think does your Perfect Female Videogame Character is like?
How does it look? What is her personality? What are her capabilities? Motivations? What are her realationships to other characters?
She does not have to belong to a specific game. Really. She can be generic or even belong to some kind of roguh theoretical game you have in mind.

Can we, the community, create a female character that is more then her boobs?

We shall see.

How about a female protagonist who has survived breast cancer, therefore is sans breasts?

What about Mirror's Edge? Strong female character, no real attention to her breasts...
I never played the game, but that is just because the lead character wasn't sexually appealing to me.
I pray you are trying to make a joke. You passed up on a first-person title because the main character wasn't attractive to you?

Amaterasu from Okami. Doesn't capitalize on sex appeal...not obnoxious in any way...genuinely likeable as a main character.

I am not saying boobs are bad. Boobs are good. Very good.
I just think maybe we can create a character who is not DEFINED through her boobs.
They already did, her name is Alyx Vance. She is cool, hot and awesome!

1. Scars. Nobody is willing to give a female protagonist in a video game some kind of deformity, but scars tell a story. They add a very individual physical identity to a character.

2. Somebody that can reason like a rational human being, as opposed to being in constant fight-or-flight mode.

3. I'm not expecting to see a female video game character dealing with "real" issues anymore than I am expecting to see a male video game character do the same.

In other words, if I'm playing something like Fahrenheit then sure I'd like to deal with a character's background and day-to-day interactions with family, friends, co-workers, etc. But, if it's going to be a fragfest like Gears, then I just want someone that actually looks like they belong on a battlefield. Cover up, blend in, work on building muscle more than your perfecting your tan.

4. Nobody that I would feel completely justified in nicknaming Tits Ahoy.

But if all that's too hard then could she have, like, a machine gun for a head? Dude, that would be fucking sick.

EDIT: Also, yes, Alyx Vance is awesome, but let's not forget the original badass gaming chick: Samus Aran. You couldn't even see her body/face for the majority of the game and she's still one of the most popular video game characters of all time.
At least, until SSBB came out and we had the option to play as her with her armor off....

I enjoyed Arieth and Tifa from FFVII... and Yuffie too i suppose...

Meryl (sp?) from MGS was decent.

Pandora from Guitar Hero!!!!

the girl in FFXIII looks to be promising

of course there is Zelda i guess, but i don't really play those games... and she's not the main character...

I agree with Silent Hill 3's lead.. she was solid.

Lulu from FFX was my favorite character from that game. (i enjoy a goth gal every now and again as long as their not stereotypically emoish)

- i suppsoe a great female character would be able to hold her own in a fight (preferably with swords, or at least a BFG), not too emotionally unstable (no girl version of going through the lifestream Cloud plz), wit is a nice attribute. *oh a tall elfen chick with a Bow is a always hot... ah sorry this isn't all about appearance...
umm yea they don't need to be half naked, but obviously it does sell and the gamemakers know it.

This seems more a matter of where your eyes are focused rather than some preponderance of large breasted women in videogames.
As a fun exercise, look at your personal stack of videogames then count how many of them have women whose cup size runs larger than, say, C cup. After that, count how many women in the game have large breasts versus those who don't. After you're finished figuring out the average cup size, check which genre the game is in.
Do it again with the idealized male characters (such as the male cast of Final Fantasy 8, for starters) whether going by beauty or muscle size (Chris Redfield seems to be giving Duke Nukem and Marcus Fenix a run for their money these days).
Maybe we have very differnt prefences in games, but it is my experience that busty women in games are not nearly as common as people make them out to be.
Maybe developers should just leave all female protagonists be player-defined as in games such as Mass Effect, Saint's Row 2 or even Soul Calibur 4 so they can be tweaked to everyone liking without the character personality being affected in the slightest save for the player's perception based upon their own designs.

Here are some good female leads, with no gigantic boobage.
I'm not sure if you're making your point here. Can that girl get any more naked without exposing everything?

She doesn't look as if she's dressed too differently from the Prince. Both are dressed more modestly than the previous Prince of Persia.http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2009/04/30-pc-games-to-play-before-you-die/pr.jpg
That's the real issue here, I'd say, the idea that the female characters should be more covered than the male ones and if they aren't, there's nothing to them but skin.

Hehe.. Boobs on legs

I never saw the point of that form of game character. The girl in x blades has such thin thong lines im not sure she just doesnt have white pubes. Its ridiculous, ugly and retarded most of the time.

*snigger* White pubes. Im so funny.
