Now don't get me wrong, I love me some FMA:B, but I'd hardly call it brutal or gory :/ Sure it has a few moments but it's NOTHING like Elfen Lied or some of the other series listed here... Still a great show and I recommend it for those who haven't seen it yet to at least check it out.

Bible Black is just sick. If you want to be angry/horrified/profoundly-upset by something then it is definitely for you. It wins most extreme brutal messed up Anime series ever I think.

I'll also repeat everyone with Elfen Lied. We are all saying it because it is a MUST see. You are really missing out if you haven't.

If you want to just go with messed up awesome Death Note if you haven't already.

Bible Black

Do not argue, you cannot. It's like arguing who is the worst killer. Sure, Dahmer and Bundy might be bad. But Hitler is in a rank all his own.

Baccano has a bit of gore in it, so id reccommend it maybe. Also angel sanctuary, i havent seen the anime but i read the manga and it was pretty gory. Also Black Lagoon and Gantz r awesome.

Hellsing, the manga, I know you asked for anime but the anime adaptation of Hellsing is toned down and has very little to do with the Manga. There is a series of OVAs, Helling Ultimate, that follow the Manga ad verbatem but so far these are up to vol 6 (or 7?) of 10. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the twisted mind game of forced murder that is Battle Royal. First it was a book, then it was a movie, then a Manga and OVA adaptation. Not sure if the OVA was ever released outside of Japan and it may not be subbed yet either, but check out Battle Royal anyway.

Im glad that someone ninja'd gantz. That anime is batshit crazy. And I watched a fair bit of Elfen Lied, but i'd say that Gantz is just brutal in comparison.. I mean.. A chick loses her bottom half via acid, spine hanging out and everything, thats just epic.

I dunno if it's cause of the atmosphere, or the choice of style, but I thought Elfenlied was a lot more gory than Hellsing, especially considering that most of the vampires and ghouls just turn to ashes. Elfenlied still haunts me at particular scenes o_O

Hmm Higurashi isn't THAT gory apart from a couple of scenes. I did love those scenes in the Shion answer arc though.
Bible black isn't gory either, think the only scene with blood is the ritual as far as I can remember. There are so many things so much worse in terms of gore and sex.

OT: Highschool of the dead has been mentioned a few times and it looks to be pretty gory, if only they didn't censor some of the scenes :(

Why not just watch something that's good without being gory, such as the Gundam series'?

Either that or Elfen Lied (That's all I've got)

I'm not saying it's more gory than Elfen Lied, but at the end it gets pretty bloddy

The X/1999 film is pretty violent, a lot more so than the anime later on I think.
You might like that. ^^

I need recommendations for the most extreme, brutal, messed up and twisted animes everyone can think of. Thank you.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (my personal favourite [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Higurashi-no-Naku-Koro-ni]): Excels in build-ups to it's horrific scenes, even if they aren't that common.
Elfen Lied: Rampant ultraviolence by and towards minors. Probably the best fit to your description within retail anime.
Baccano!: Much explicit Brutality, if few deaths.
Berserk: Gory and gritty dark fantasy.
Highschool of the Dead: From what I've heard of it.
Gantz: From what I've heard of it. Might even rival Elfen Lied.

If you're looking for truly messed up Anime though, I'm not sure the mainstream retail (i.e. known outside very specific subgroups) scene is where to look. You'll probably have to go much deeper underground than The Escapist to find the most ultraviolent stuff Anime has to offer. Not sure I'd recommend that though, as the Anime mentioned here are plenty brutal for most tastes, and some already border on disturbing.

Umineko No Naku Koro Ni
I really didn't like the Umineko anime and I had high hopes for it after reading the first 4 episodes of the VN. If you want to experience Umineko you have to read the VN for the full effect.

Violent animes, well Mobile Suit Victory Gundam was done when "Kill Em All" Tomino was depressed which led to a lot of main character deaths. Space Runaway Ideon which probably holds one of the highest body counts in anime. Both are pretty messed up in "Kill Em All" fashion.

Claymore, though while a bit tame, is basically just about every extremity possible flying off behind a stream of blood, and it has a good story. Check that out.

I didn't like it either but it was violent...
