For the first time, Games Workshop?s globally renowned Warhammer 40,000 universe is to be realised in a feature-length movie on DVD.

Ultramarines is a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques. Games Workshop is delighted to be working with UK-based production company Codex Pictures, who have the momentous task of bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to the screen.

Commenting on the news, Erik Mogensen, Licensing and Acquired Rights Manager for Games Workshop, said, ?Over the years, we have been approached again and again by all sorts of producers and film companies wanting to take our intellectual property to the screen. We have always believed that, in the right hands, the stories, themes and characters from the Warhammer 40,000 universe would lend themselves perfectly to the movie genre. We?re working closely with the talented team at Codex Pictures, who have an excellent understanding of the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property and an inspired vision for the movie. We can?t wait to see our universe come to life on-screen.?

?We?re hugely honoured to be making Ultramarines,? said a spokesman for Codex Pictures. ?It?s taken a lot of research and development to get to this stage ? and it?s such an exciting challenge to be able to bring the depth and power of the Warhammer 40,000 universe to a brand new medium.?

News of the production of a movie was unveiled at UK Games Day, the biggest event in the Games Workshop calendar, on Sunday, September 27 2009.

Finally, a proper 40k movie done in CGI. Inquisitor was ok, and Damnatus will never see the light of day, but this is good step to getting 40k on the big screen.

Can't wait.

Damnatus got leaked in German.

ANDDDD, IDK, the Super-Smurfs are the most boring Chapter in the 40k universe, if you ask me, if they do something like defending the homeworld from Nids it might work, but meh.

I've seen some of Codex's older stuff, let us hope since then they have got a lot better, otherwise it won't really be that good, it needs a certian dark and gritty style or it won't just be 40k, not the clean and shiney of Ultramarines.

Give me a Death Korps of Krieg move! Give me a Cain movie, that would be EXCELLENT.

Damnatus actually got leaked? Never heard about that, will have to see if I can find a copy.

As for the smurf's, there the poster boys of 40k, i'm not glad there using them, but I can understand about it. Hopefully this will open the door for Gaunts Ghosts, Ravenor, Eisenhorn, Space Wolfs, anything from the "cooler" side of 40k, coming to the big screen.

Christ, imagine what a series based on the new Horus Heresy novels would be like.

Oh, good, more Marine Fail. The single least characterful chapter, in the single least characterful army. Why not make a movie about a Tyranid Hormagaunt? Or a Necron Warrior? Seriously, Space Marines in general are faceless, Ultramarines doubly so.

All I can say is this.

PLEASE don't let this movie suck. I so badly want it to be good. As far as choice of chapters go why not go for the Blood Ravens? We've all played as them in the games so lets have a movie about them.

If it's good I'll love it, and if it's bad then I'll still love it.

You're seriously saying that Space Marines are more faceless than Necrons?

I think they had a bit of an accident with the starch.

Why is it always the ultramarines in the lime light? :|

Warhammer 40k movie? Oh no they fucking didn't. It has enough popularity and obsessive fanboys as it is.

Well,at least there will be some outrage about Ultramarines stealing the spotlight. Again.

According to the Codex Pictures website their past works include Bionicle for Lego. This does not bode well. The best I am hoping for is a 90 min dawn of war intro. The worst will probably be a 120 min PG toy commercial replacing space marines for ugly legos. I hope they at least get a decent writer to put in some snappy dialog.

In essence, yes. Though it's rather like comparing negative numbers, in terms of army character.

Necrons are all faceless killing machines, built for the sole purpose of exstinguishing life. Pretty faceless, but at the same time, there is a certain character to the army as a whole.

Space Marines, on the other hand, do tend to have a bit of personality, but the fact remains the entire bunch of them are the biggest cavalacade of Mary Sues there are, there is no subtlety in any of their fluff, and they are all intrinsically similar.

Sure, there are SW, BA and BT. That's it. Don't point out Dark Angels - Dark Angels are nothing but Codex Marines with an Emo twist. They do not have any distinguishing features aside from the fact that GW decieded to milk some extra cash from their fluff-fans by making a copy-paste job of the SM codex with some Special characters.

oh that would be so sweet! I would rather watch another chapter like the Iron Hands or something, or even a movie based off The Fallen.

I hope that it deal with alot of moral issues in the 40k universe, its a very dark gritty and sad place to be in and I hope they dont just have it about killing. But themes like genocide famine, poverty even basic human rights could be looked at in this movie. I hope they have a decent writer

Granted, the individual chapters are kinda generic and pretty similar for the most part.

My view, however, is that a legion made entirely of 8 foot tall, power-armoured space-fascists, who have two hearts, spit acid, wear pauldrons larger than their heads, and can eat the corpses of their enemies to gain their memories doesn't really need to have much distinctive personality, because it's absolutely motherfucking grimdark and awesome.

That sounds pretty cool I have to admit. And, as much as I'd prefer a Space Wolves movie to a Ultramarines, I do have to admit that the Smurfs are the most recognisable Chapter from the 40K universe, as well as having an extensive history to draw upon for a plot line.

Please let this not suck.

Tbh, I'd be more interested in seeing a movie based around one of the interesting marine chapters, like the Dark Angels, Blood Angels or Space Puppies. A Horus Heresy movie would make far more interesting viewing, in my slightly-less-than-humble opinion.

I can't see how some vanillamarines fluff could be dragged out to longer than 20 mins. The chapter just doesn't have enough character to it. I've seen necron lords with more personality.

Just on a side note, does anyone know what happened to the proposed 3d movies based on the comics about Leonatos and his blood angel squad, and the daemonifuge story about the inquisitor and the adeptus sororitas saint? Did they go the same way as duke nukem forever?
