It makes it look like there's more on your mind then you're saying.
Comes off as very passive aggressive.
I had a friend who used this tactic, so if I was like I need to go and she said (some form of goodbye)... I knew I would probably have to say till I coaxed getting whatever she wanted to say but was too polite to say outright. Well she thinks polite. I think pain in my ass.

Wow, I can only understand that up until the "cus iv tld im". I have a friend who does that as well and I spend more time trying to translate it than the time he saved by typing it like that.

Ellipses are used to indicate a long pause or to parse a quote. Your use of one wasn't appropriate. You should have written "...bye" as the pause was before and not after. Only put an ellipsis at the end of a sentence if you're expecting the other person to finish that sentence or stopping the sentence prematurely. Don't use ellipses very often either, if you think you need ellipses multiple times in most conversations you're using them way too liberally.

I don't see why she got so mad though, obviously she didn't know that you were misusing the ellipsis.

To me the ellipses imply that there is more to what you said than what was written; a subtext. If someone said "Bye..." to me, my immedeate thoughts would be that they ment it in a "I don't want you to go" way.

Ellipsis is used to represent missing words in a sentence, so often denotes unspoken feelings. As such, the use of the device can easily be interpreted as awkward. Also, bringing up the article makes you look like a pedantic smartass.

Here's your answer. I would have typed it myself but that would be a little redundant don't you think?

Well ... if people ... put elipses ... in their text ... on the internet ... they start sounding ... like ... William Shatner. (But is that a bad thing?)
OT: Well I dunno, some times people can get annoyed by small things. Like I get annoyed if chairs are not set up properly.

Me: Bye...
I think this just made it sound like you had something on your mind. I know anytime I do this, I generally have more on my mind. And whenever anyone else does this, I assume the same. And without fail, they ALWAYS do. From the limited amount of the conversation you have given, this is all I can figure.

This. Or they're disappointed. I hate it when people put an ellipsis or semi-ellipsis after saying goodbye. It makes it seem like they want to say something but they're afraid of it. It really pisses me off.

Because ellipses are not used in polite conversation. Think about it.
In face-to-face conversation, ellipses are typically accompanied by awkward looks or gestures. It makes the other person think you think they're nutty.

So I was talking to a girl I know on Facebook, and we were having a conversation on pizza, and well, this is how the end of the conversation went.

Her: I gtg bye.

Me: Bye...

Her: Stop putting those dots after everything!

Me: Why? They're just as important to speech as a comma.

Her: They just make everything so awkward!!

Me: Why are you getting so mad?

Her: Because!!!

I then proceeded to give her the Wikipedia article to elipsis, and then she logged off. Any ideas on what that was about? Any other conversations you've had where you didn't know what they were talking about?
EDIT: I had used the elipsis because it had been several minutes after she'd said bye. Forgot to point that out.
... = Emo dots.

Its a way of imploring people to pity you, or so its commonly used. So yeah, its annoying as fuck when people use it that way. As I don't talk to you I can't really judge, but that looks about right.

Maybe I should elaborate, this... at the end of a sentence tends to make it seem as though you were expecting something more or else. 'I'm sorry...' Makes you look incredibly apologetic, 'Okay...' Makes it seem as though you're trying to make a person realize they said something wrong. Just some random examples. (I'm at work and killing time)
