So I was talking to a girl I know on Facebook, and we were having a conversation on pizza, and well, this is how the end of the conversation went.

Her: I gtg bye.

Me: Bye...

Her: Stop putting those dots after everything!

Me: Why? They're just as important to speech as a comma.

Her: They just make everything so awkward!!

Me: Why are you getting so mad?

Her: Because!!!

I then proceeded to give her the Wikipedia article to elipsis, and then she logged off. Any ideas on what that was about? Any other conversations you've had where you didn't know what they were talking about?

EDIT: I had used the elipsis because it had been several minutes after she'd said bye. Forgot to point that out.

Edit the second: I sent her a message saying that I was sorry for whatever it was that got her so angry and she said that she was just kidding. Women are weird.

Didn't seem that unusual to me. Typical bullshit people normally talk about with instant messaging.

And no, I can't think of any conversations I've had in which I don't understand what the other person is talking about. Now, the other way around and...

I think it makes things sound awkward. If someone said "bye..." to me I'd think they were angry with me or something.

Because... if you use too many then... well... it tends to get rather... annoying... you know...?

I use ... for everything... it replaces my period... and comma... and colon... and semicolon... and explanation mark... and just about everything else that isn't a letter...

It makes it look like there's more on your mind then you're saying.
Comes off as very passive aggressive.

The 'gtg' annoys me. I really hate it when people use text talk.

That's about it.

Yes, the ellipsis is an important part of writing. However, abuse of it can get annoying, as will anything done ad nauseam. Think about it: the ellipsis is used to represent, on paper, somebody's voice trailing off (in your case), or a dramatic pause of some kind. While it can be written out on paper, it is just as annoying there as it is in real life if done too often.

Those three dots does give her a feeling of maybe you're angry at her.
Maybe just put a smiley after "bye"

Well I personally have no problem with them if their used correctly. Then again I have to ask, how often do you use them (or rather did you use them)?
Mind you I get told to stop using apostophies.

I used to abuse ellipses, using them for periods.
Then I discovered how they were supposed to be used.
Did you read that Wikipedia article?
You'd learn that you're using them wrong.

It's funny because I was just telling him how annoyed I am by it. xD

I don't feel I use them much, and this is the first time anyone's ever complained.

It possibly could be just a personal preference. Some people don't like the use of certain grammatical signals, others don't like long words.

When you put the ... after bye it implies that you're disappointed or angry. At least in my experience that's how it is. So it's not a positive way to leave a conversation.
