Uncharted 4...anyone else come late to this?

So, it's been out since last May, and I've only just started playing it. And it's even better than the first three (in my opinion). Anyone else arrived late to this?

It was ok. Too many boring parts, especially early on. Did we REALLY need to play as Drake when he's being a boring 9-5 wage slave or when he's a stupid kid?

It was alright. Just... y'know, more Uncharted. I liked how it ended.

Now all that remains is to see what lengths Sony goes to to squeeze more sequels out.

It was ok. Too many boring parts, especially early on. Did we REALLY need to play as Drake when he's being a boring 9-5 wage slave or when he's a stupid kid?

Daily grind Drake was fun to observe, flashback Drake was boring.

Overall I like Uncharted 4, and it accomplishes the task of actually making Drake a 3 dimensional character, but there's some big pitfalls. The start is extremely slow due to the game needing to introduce Sam. And Sam as a character just isn't very interesting or likeable, certainly not enough for the game to hang most of its plot from.

There's also a bunch of other stuff the game does concerning Drake's youth that seriously bugged me.

And while I think it gave a very fitting end to the franchise, I didn't feel earned.

Uncharted 2 still comes in first, despite 4 greatly improving on both the action gameplay and the characters.

My copy is still in the cellophane sitting on a table by itself since November.

I will play it. I've enjoyed the previous games. I'm just not in the mood for the kind of experience it offers right now. I've been in an open world kick lately.

Just played it over the holidays. Definitely didn't have the impact that UC2 had, but overall I liked the gameplay more. They simply expanded on it the most by far, with better melee, climbing, grappling, contextual movement, and of course driving. The winch was also a nice touch.

There were definitely more action set piece moments in 2 and 3, but 4 felt like a more well-rounded and complete adventure. Have to say it was hard to find fault with how it ended. And to think so many people thought the game would be a disaster without Amy. She did great with 1 & 2, but 3 was a by-the-numbers sequel with some shoehorned scripting. They're all meant to be pulpy storytelling, but imo 4 had almost perfect tone for this series, and ended it on a most graceful note.

I haven't played the previous games, but I was at a friend's place and he had this.

After an hour or so in I got pissed off at being railroaded everywhere and played Broforce instead. I wanted to play a game, but it felt more like the game was playing me.

Well, it's a videogame. I was going to do this hilarious bit where I copy + paste the definition of videogame, then ask if Uncharted is not [copy + paste]? Using an overly lengthy and specific definition, then rephrashing it as a question for humor. What a lark.

Sometimes you start out parachuting into the battlefield, sometimes you get shat out of a pipe in Mushroom Kingdom. Every other Uncharted starts you wiggling out of a tricky situation, because the games are about that. Uncharted 4 isn't; it's about a guy who's left his adventuring days behind and is now trapped in a boring suburban lifestyle and having a mid-life crisis about it. The game puts you there and lets it stew for a bit so you empathize with his dilemma. It may be a slow-boil but I can't blame the devs for having a go at storytelling. After that it's 95% punching, shooting, running, hiding, climbing and besting enemy AI. You know - a game.

But you just know they're going to try and bring Drake back at some point. His daughter gets kidnapped and 52-year-old Nathan gets back into the game again. Or they decide that he found time to shoot a few hundred more people during that photo montage you see in the UC4 epilogue.

Even if Naughty Dog don't do it, they'll hand the IP to some other studio. The game industry just has no class that way.

Uncharted is a waste of time for mediocre gameplay. Metal Gear Solid 4 pushed things too far as is, but atleast still had some worthwhile gaming and plot. I dont think Uncharted really needed to dethrone it as a game that wastes so much time being a movie.

I liked those bits. (The childhood flashbacks not so much though.) I don't mind game being "cinematic" or movie-like so long as it's good at it. UC4's intro had enough breezy dialogue to keep me engaged.

And I say all this as someone who is lukewarm on Uncharted in general.

If it's not your deal then that's fine. I can see why it would try the patience of someone looking for some "pure" or "traditional" gaming (or whatever you want to call it).

There's plenty of games out there to scratch that itch, especially these days with all the old-school callbacks and Dark Souls imitators. For instance, I've been hearing good things about Hollow Knight.

Half life's first 10 minutes was a tram ride, followed by another 5 or so minutes walking to work and possibly fucking off a bit. It was a nice way to get settled in before shit got real, and gave a general feel for Black Mesa before everything was on fire and crawling with aliens.

I haven't played UC4 yet but I've played the first 3, so generally know what to expect.

The stealth system in Uncharted 4 made me really happy.

I mean sure, compared to ACTUAL stealth games the stealth system is pretty bare-bones, and the enemy AI isn't exactly the most competent at detecting your presence, but it was a huge step up from the barely there stealth of the previous uncharted games, and the amount of climbing that you had to do to make the stealth work felt unique and rewarding.

Especially the stealth section in

the flooded city where you're climbing all over a bunch of half-submerged buildings, climbing multiple floors up, choking out a guy, then diving off into the water to avoid detection

all feels fantastic.

I also kind of enjoyed the fact that

the game ended without some any kind of supernatural twist. It's just a straight adventure story about finding pirate treasure, and the back story about the pirates working together to build a pirate utopia only to BRUTALLY betray each other at the end kept me interested. You're constantly waiting for there to be pirate ghosts or something because all the other Uncharted games have a supernatural element to them, and when it never shows up it's actually a nice subversion of expectations.

I definitely wouldn't put it as my favorite Uncharted game, that goes to Uncharted 2, but I would say it's a lot better than Uncharted 3 or Uncharted 1, and it wraps up the Uncharted franchise quite well.

It's giving characterization to a character who has spent 3 games exploding ancient temples. It's a character that the people playing this game LIKE and they're interested in seeing him be portrayed as an actual human being for a little bit before he becomes Indiana Jones crossed with a terminator.

I'm sorry that it bored you so much. I actually really enjoyed it. Sometimes a bit of context is a nice contrast to all the explosions that are about to happen. That's something that I also really enjoyed about the new Wolfenstein series, and one of the reason that I'm having trouble getting into Doom 2016 despite the gameplay being impeccable.

Having strong characterization is good because it makes you more invested in the shootbangs that happen later.

I pretty much agree completely. Working Drake and Elena were fine for me because their interactions are by far the most interesting whether they're adventuring or eating dinner. That's the main problem with Uncharted 4 is that they're barely together. When Elena joins the adventure, the game starts feeling like Uncharted again. I couldn't care less about Sam and Drake and all the freaking climbing and rope swinging. And, the icing on the cake that was revealed later was one of those boring ass chapters never even happened but I had to play through that shit. I also did care for the gameplay near as much and I thought the game took steps backwards in that department, the recoil on the automatics was overdone as Uncharted isn't tactical shooter or anything. Then, they made the levels bigger and implemented just about every area allowing for stealth, and it just came off as a poor man's Metal Gear. And, so much climbing.

Uncharted 2 is really the only good game in the series and the only one I rate over a 5/10.
