Howdy. I'm 13 years old.
I understand how you feel, i never actually speak during games unless i'm with friends. But i do agree that would be a nice feature, or you could just turn off your mic like i do when i'm in a match with people you don't know.
Oh also my voice has broken. Tee-hee.

Or high pitched rapidly bantering voice broken 12 year olds. They make hungover people want to die.

Yes, 10-12 years olds with a microphone can be annoying. But it's nowhere near as annoying as an 18+ year old acting like an idiot. At least the 10-12 year old's don't have the life experience to know what's annoying and what's not. What's the 18+ year old's excuse? Not enough love from their mother?

Yeah, just as a moment in defence (I'm 35), I was on TF2, and a kid joins with a mic, and he's said a few things, just info really ..'spy pyro' 'I got uber', actually sensible stuff, then a couple of our team start with 'omg kid with mic = fail' etc.

Of course, after a while the kid starts getting annoying, but I'm wondering, perhaps if he'd not been abused purely for his age, when he'd been playing usefully, he may not have turned into a singing, annoying squeaky kid.

Just saying, if the first thing you hear is a falsetto rendition of 'never gonna give you up' by all means abuse em then mute n boot em, but they aint all bad, just most of em :D

Use the goddamn mute button. End of story.
That would be a brilliant plan if it weren't for the fact that not every online game has a mute button, an even better idea would be to make it so we don't have to mute people in the first place (and I am NOT refering to selective genocide or thought police)

Even though the high pitched noises and such are REALLY annoying, I'm more concerned about the way they present themselves online. You get the impression they've somehow found a run down house in a run down city where there are NO adults! I don't really like it.

What comes out of their mouths happens! The homophobia, the racism, it's old news, so the NEW news (which is more of a question!) is WHY are they being so obnoxious? Who taught them such language and what makes them think it's either necessary or acceptable... THAT'S what gets me frustrated!

I completely agree with you on this. I have no idea why these kids act in such a way, or even where they would have learned to do so. Maybe they think it'll somehow earn them the respect of older players? I don't know. It's baffling.

Well, two things bother me.

First, their high voices produce this irritating noise, so you can't think about anything else, than screaming to them "Shut up!".

The other thing, is that they laugh hysterically, when they kill anyone. And they laugh so much, you'd thought, that they did a great favor for humanity. However, when they killed, the only things you hear are either "Your mom -insert_insults_here-" or other racist comments.

That's why there should be more protection against underage players, for example, Team Fortress 2 is rated 16+, yet yesterday I found some kiddo with "1995" in name, acting like written above, with this childish voice. Geez. That's why I'm "yes" for voice-testing in games. If it's too high - no voice chatting today, kid.

i just don't like spending my leisurely time in the company of children. we have nothing in common and no reason to speak to one another (this goes more most adults online as well) so just go away.

Eh.. If we had a pitch password system of allowing/booting from the mic, some girls well over 10 years old will get the boot as well. (And if someone says 'well that would just be a bonus', you're not funny). I agree with previous posters that this is very much just a stereotype, a terrible stereotype that is going to overrun everything and make playing games on Live pretty unfair for younger but equally experienced players. Maybe they've never kissed a girl before, but neither have half of you older gents. ^_-

A previous poster stated that he is regularly ignored when trying to voice his opinion and help the team. That's discrimination you know. You need to give everyone a chance. If they decide to fit the stereotype like a glove, feel free to ignore. But don't be one of those people who hears a pitch and blocks it out immediately. That's ridiculous.

As for slapping parents for buying children games outside their age group.. This is mostly necessary, but not completely. Some parents actually pay attention. I'm a mum to be and I plan on playing through the game first and then asking myself if my daughter's maturity level is high enough for it, not just her age. Some of us are gifted with maturity and intelligence earlier in life than others.

This topic holds water, but an argument for taking microphones away from children is silly and unrealistic.

But I feel your pain brother.

In all honesty, if you're looking for a game with voice chat that doesn't involve kids ruining you concentration, play a MMORPG, join a guild with a mature theme, and hang out on their vent server.

Team fortress is a game the wee ones aren't really into, either.

So you have options, just not a perfect world of COD4. The bright side is that in that game, no one really uses voice chat to form strategy, it's just usually a shit talking medium.
