The thing about Perfect Blue is that everyone loved it...when it was re-released as Black Swan
Oh My God... You're right. Weird. I never realized that until now. 0.o
Yeah I noticed this as well, Perfect Blue is very very good. Excellent really.

People have already mentioned Oldboy so my contribution is Gattacca. Not brilliant but very good.

some "underrated" films:

O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU - Great movie. Underrated for sure.

OLD BOY - Korean film. Not really underrated but it could be considered obscure. Really recommend it if you liked movies like Fight Club or Donnie Darko.

THANK YOU FOR SMOKING - I'm not really sure how well known this movie is. No one I know has seen it, save for a friend in film school.

CLERKS/CLERKS 2 - Again you may have seen them but many people I know have not. freaking hilarious movies.

STARSHIP TROOPERS - Underrated. Its a campy scifi satire on war.

Oldboy - Best south Korean film ever made
District 13 - Awesome french parkour film

That's all i can think of at the moment

Edit: actually they are both quite highly rated, but no-one i know has heard of them.
Thanks for the tip on District 13. By the way, Park Chan-wook's "Lady Vengeance" is interesting, as well.

The Thirteenth Warrior. The studio gave it no advertising and it bombed in the theaters. Find it, buy it, love it!

Dark City with Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelly. Bizarre, dark and imaginative.

Legend with Tom Cruise before he became an insane megalomaniac.

And, for two of the best B movies ever overshadowed by bad sequels. . . . . . .
Tremors and Tremors 2: Aftershocks. The other movies and TV series were just bad dreams and don't really exist (no matter what IMDB may say). The first two were underrated comic masterpieces!

Is that the one with Antonio banderas(can't spell it guy from desperado)? Haven't seen it just wondering.

OT: Can't think of any underrated films, but one that's probably not well known is Shallow Grave it's a bit of a mind fuck film.

The first Highlander film is amazing which very few people I know have watched. Falling Down is also an amazing film which very few people I know have heard of.
The "first" Highlander film? You mean just Highlander, don't you? Don't you? Always thought they should make a sequel to that one day, so long as they don't screw it up and make it about a race of aliens with induced amnesia or some shit like that.

And Falling Down, that was a fantastic film, I loved it. Good choice there.

First movie I thought of when I saw the topic. Had the rotten luck of coming out the year before The Matrix.

Would also add:

Requiem for a Dream - I find that too many people are dismissive of this because they perceive any movie that portrays drugs in a negative light as being some sort of anti-drug propaganda. Ignore them. Not for those who are squeamish about needles.

The Hunt for Red October - An excellent war movie that is very watchable as long as you don't think too much about the casting.

Centurion - A movie about a group of Roman soldiers trying to find their way back to friendly territory after their legion is slaughtered in an ambush.

Scott Pilgrim. Everyone hates Michael Cera, so that gets in the way of all my friends enjoying - hell, even seeing - one of only two movies to give me an emotional reaction last year.
What strange world do you live in? Everyone i know loves Cera and his movies, and Scott Pilgrim is one of the biggest hits of 2010 xD.

Very recent, but still fits - Warrior.

I saw Warrior at the cinema last month and I just thought it was mindblowingly good. I had just watched Tinker Tailor and I can safely say that Warrior is the best drama out of the two.

The acting was brilliant, Tom Hardy as always is great, the story is touching and Nick Nolte deserves an Oscar for playing the dad. Also, I don't watch MMA but the fight scenes in Warrior are intense and well shot without needing to resort to Bourne-style extreme shaky close-ups.

ok I might get sh*t for this, but I loved the live action version of the Spawn series, that started Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo. When Spawn comes down in the big ballroom with his cape, man that was an awesome scene. Granted I was seven when I watched it, and Spawn always reminded me of a darker version of Batman (which I loved as a child), so my opinion might be a little bit biased.

Soldier. A good scifi film next to no one has seen.
Nah, I've seen that. My Dad and Brother used to love it.

It uh... hasn't aged well.

Edit: Damn, I'm trying to think.

There was a crazy dark movie co-starring the guy from Oldboy that was about a serial killer and a guy trying to get revenge.

I think it's called "I saw the Devil"

Not exactly an unknown movie, but it's kind of a Cult classic with John Reno and Fuck-I-Forget-her-name at the moment called "Leon; The Professional". One of the better Hitman movies out there.

Boondock Saints and Equilibrium. Both very good movies that just came out with poor press. I am saddened everytime I meet someone who hasn't seen these movies.

In fact, thinking about them makes me want to go watch them both now.

The Evil dead movies -
bruce campell is a genius in is acting and sam raimi did an awesome job. especially army of darkness is truly hilarious.

The Swimmer -
movie from the 60's about a guy who takes a journey home bye swimming in all his neighbours pools. But this journey takes him to the depths of his life. Truly a movie which baffles your mind. If you like donnie darko then you will like this It can be a little campy at some points.

First blood -
The first rambo movie was nothing like it sequels. It was actually a movie about a vietnam vet struggling to get back in society. When you mention rambo to other people they immediatly react as its all muscles and explosions and brainless but the first one truly is not. Just like at the final scene, very moving (who says sly cant act). And for a violent movie there is only one death (altough many wounded) also very good soundtrack

transformers the movie (1986) -
If you are a little bit of an transformers fan you really should watch this movie. Great 80's soundtrack, awsome animation. It is also very balsy in killing of main characters you grew to love during the normal season episodes.

the dollar trilogy -
Critically acclaimed movies but most of my friends have never watched them and they really deserve multiple viewings. my favorite is 'for a few dollars more'. but the other two (the good the bad and the ugly and a fistfull of dollars) are awesoms as well. I love Lee van Cleef and off course clint is awesome as well. the music by ennio morricone is reallyout of this world, breathtaking!

Event Horizon: My favorite horror movie of all time...and no one i know has seen it.
I've seen Event Horizon, I thought it was pretty poor, the first act was quite strong, but it quickly falls apart, by the third act the film became a parody of itself.

I'll have to go with Nicholas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth, opinions on the film seem rather divided. Despite starring Bowie there doesn't seem to be much interest in it, which is a pity, outside one or two (awkward) psychedelic scenes it's easily one of the greatest science fiction films.

Really? I gave it a try on MovieBob's recommendation, and I couldn't even finish it. After you strip out the retro-gamer fanservice, it just struck me as your bog-standard slacker flick. Admittedly, I stopped right after the club fight when the first guy turned into quarters or something, but in my defense, at that point the only emotional reaction I had was an intense dislike for all of the characters. Considering the amount of movie that was left, I doubt the next scene would have been all of them dying horribly in a gas fire, so I don't think I missed anything that I would have liked.

Different strokes, I suppose...

Back on topic, though... I have to say it, may the gods forgive me. I really liked...
Super Mario Brothers.

Luigi: I read somewhere that sea turtles navigate thousands of miles on instinct!
Mario: Not in New York Traffic, they don't!
