Bulletstorm. Once you get over the fact that you need to work together instead of trying to fuck everyone over then it was pretty good. Shame I can never connect any more. Maybe it's still got a thriving MP community, just not at the times I play.

Shadowrun.

Awesome little FPS, extremely balanced and with a great depth. Team work is emphasised and players (at least whilst I played it) generally had a great deal of respect for each other - fun was more important than winning.

Plus teleporting! Maps were so much more dynamic than in other games seeing as players could teleport through walls ceilings and floors around you.

Though I have to admit it was plagued by lag for a while, and I have no idea how small the remaining playerbase is. It also clearly feels 'incomplete'. Was a shame how the game was released; it had the potential to be so much better.

Ugh, I just couldn't bear it. I've got too many bad memories of playing Gauntlet (way back), Baldur's Gate and Diablo (more recently) and being in a party where you're busy getting your ass kicked fighting all the monsters and there's one selfish b*stard in the group (usually my mate Phil) who runs around the ourskirts of the fight picking up all the loot. I know that's a case of bad players rather than bad game-mode, but those experiences have really soured me to the whole multiplayer RPG thing.
Well... That's why I live 2 blocks away from him so I can punch sense into him :p Though he knows I will not help him if he decided to dick me out of lewt I -need-. If I don't need it, I rather don't care either :p
Yeah, it's funny that my mate never tries that at our Geek Club (tabletop RP), when he's within arms reach...

However I still contend that any form of co-op MP is the quickest way of having arguments with friends. Either you get pissed that they're not pulling their weight or vice versa. It's rare that two, three or even four people are all of the same skill level.

Doom on XBLA. Nobody is ever online
I feel your pain. Now they've taken it off the Marketplace it's not gonna get any busier, either. 2's still up, so that could conceivably get new traffic, but it's still not good news for the classics. And now I feel old.

Dead Space 2. It was hasily constructed at the last second (and it shows), but, damn was it fun.

Working together to accomplish a goal, punishing those who uses the "Army of One/Call of Duty" mechanic. I can't describe how satisfying it was to be able to jump on someone and claw out their face, "WOLOLOLO" into the microphone and they can hear it.

We had fun a lot too. When we had more than 4 people online, sometimes we would join in on the game, and would go, "Hey, man. How are you doing?" and we would challenge ourselves to have a conversation before we got ejected from their face or we killed them.

The unfortunate problem is that because a single person can't own by themselves, that a lot of people got turned off by it.

Actually, come to think of it, any multiplayer in which you have to work together to kill things is underrated. Call of Duty has dulled our brains to the idea of cooperation.

Major props for saying Skulltag, as it's loads of fun. It's not exactly free, however. You need a copy of Doom to be able to play it.

OT: I'm gonna agree with Skulltag, it's insanely fun.

Funny, when I saw the title of the thread I immediately thought Space Marine as well. It's an unorderly mess of grenades, lots of heavy weapons in confined spaces, flying marines and a lot of fun.

Pirates, Vikings and Knights II perhaps. Shame I seem to kill every sourcemod that I touch. On that note, Dystopia and Smashball too. I also quite liked Savage 2 and apparently was quite good at it too.

On the note of SPHESS MEHREEN, I played it on the PC and it ran like crap from no dedicated servers. Hard to chainsword things when my ping is through the roof. Seemed like good fun though.

Space Marine and Uncharted come to mind. Uncharted is pretty much the only worthwhile competitive multiplayer shooter on consoles(aside from Monday Night Combat, which is much better on PC anyway), but it doesn't get the recognition it deserves in that regard.

The Cursed Crusade.

Bought it on release day, and it was already on sale. HA!

Anyway, an episode of Jimquisition mentioned it, and I looked into it after that. I decided to give it a try, and look at that, I like it.

Split-screen action has always been my vice, and this game does it well.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Man, stunning/killing people in that game was so freakin' satisfying. And unlike my experience with multiplayer shooters, I can have fun even if I and/or my team does poorly.

Hopefully Revelations' multiplayer is just as fun.

I thought MAG was brilliant, and one of the best online Fps'es I've ever played (even better than TF2 in my opinion).

Shame most people didn't think overwise, and the community died not long after it was released. Also, Zipper made some great improvements to it later on, but by that time it was already too late, and most people moved on to other games (including me).

I'll still have those fond memories of it though, Raven, and S.V.E.R forever, down with Valor, those cheating sniper spawn camping scum bags!

Uncharted 2 (and I fear Uncharted 3). This game was just NOT CoD or any other title that featured a similar multiplayer. You could find weapons scattered throughout the levels, feats (I believed they were called that) spiced things up without making you too overpowered or cheap, and essentially, it really brought the parkour feel of gameplay to the shooter genre. You can climb anything, slide into cover, shoot while clinging to a wall, do quick kills on unsuspecting enemies, and gameplay was fun an fairly balanced.

Features from this game have caused other developers to develop around them (such as the parkour elements that were suppose to define Brink, and the quick kills that are found in the Halo Reach multiplayer). It's just a shame that with the CoD titles that followed the release of Uncharted 2 that it forced their gunplay mechanics to mirror it slightly (i.e. the hit-to-kill ration is nearly similar for all the guns). Rather than taking a few pistol shots or half a dozen rifle shots to kills someone, 2-3 shots from any gun is all that is needed to waste your opponent, which sucks.

Hopefully, Uncharted 3 will be different.
