Title says it all, what are some underrated or not mainstream horror movies that scare the crap out of you? The point of the thread for appreciating those movies, and maybe if you post some other people can watch the movies and enjoy it. I felt like making this thread because most horror movies nowadays are 1 and 1/2 hour gorefests with horrible plots that arent even scary

My list:
The Mist
The Strangers
Evil Dead
The Others
28 Days later
The last house on the left (1972)

Well, Event Horizon is good.
I suppose quite a few people on this site know about it, because... well, it's just one of those films.
But in real life, it isn't too well know...
Dammit, that film used to scare the hell (HA!) out of me. Brilliant.

'The last horror movie' -sounds shit, was convinced it was going to be, and was sure I was right until about ten minutes in, which is exactly what you're supposed to do. Class film.

Evil Dead? 28 Days Later? Huh...two of the most talked about horror films ever, the former considered a massive cult classic, the latter often held up as a example of the modern horror genre, not -exactly- underrated or unknown, still, enough kvetching here's my pick:

The Re-Animator series, Re-Animator, Bride of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator (Beyond isn't my favorite and is the worst of the series imo, but is still pretty competent.) A excellent set of movies ruled by the awesome Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West, loosely based on the stories by H.P. Lovecraft.

The Phantasm series. Cheesy B-Movie horror about two friends and their battle against the sinister 'Tall Man' who's stealing corpses from the local morgue for his own evil ends... The first movie's a real treat, but I wouldn't actually recommend the rest unless you really get into it.

Fright Night. Okay...yeah, this movie just screams '80s vampire flick', but it deftly handles many of the old vampire myths and it's got a pretty damn good vamp for a villain as far as Mr.Danderige goes.

For more of an anthology, Creepshow is the film to go for. Directed by George A. Romero (of Night of the Living Dead fame) and written by Steven King, it's a series of five short horror films. While they do vary in quality it's not hard to find one you'll like out of the bunch. My own favorite being the story about the reclusive bastard who's home get's invaded by murderous cockroaches.

Les Diaboliques (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Diaboliques_(film)) is a wonderful suspense film. It's incredibly creepy despite that (and possibly because) nothing happens. It's basically two hours of something very unnerving not happening, or happening offscreen. However, it's an old- fashioned horror movie, with next to no action to speak of.

I'd say Event Horizon.

Made more awesome by the theory that it takes place in the Warhammer 40k Universe.

I am defiantly bookmarking this thread. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to add to this thread.

Actually, a lot of those are really well known, strangely.

As for me, I'd like to say:

Street Trash
The Driller Killer
Anything by Hammer except To The Devil A Daughter.
Zombie Flesh Eaters
Cannibal Holocaust
August Undergrounds Mordum (the most disturbing film ever made)

Also, it's pretty well known, but Rosemary's Baby deserves a mention because it's so scary.
I have to ask. Wasn't Cannibal Holocaust a snuff film? As far as I can recall it was.

lets see, me and my friend went through the entire horror section at the near by home video, and here are some goodies. this list will contain some pieces from other peoples lists i strongly agree with.
1)"the people under the stairs"
2)"Phantasm"
3)"the last man on earth"
4)"event Horizon"
5)"Deep rising"
6)"the thing" (not so much underrated, but the new generation doesn't really know it)
7)"the langoliers"
8)"the original children of the corn"
9)"mimic"
10)"Duel" this is one of those horror movies that is really scary in that it could happen and the main character is just this poor meek everyday man.
