Explosions in the Sky is what I think of when I hear "unique," whether it is or not.
I think "Excellent" also applies.
Here are a few:
Pink Floyd
An old Avant-garde favourite of mine. They were revolutionary at the time, they still have great implications now. Rock at its finest, with the best vocal solo EVER in their Great Gig In The Sky album. LSD too as anyone who has seen The Wall will tell you.
Pain of Salvation
Progressive and conceptual, PoS have excellent concept albums in Perfect Element and BE. The latter is one of my favourite of all time. Based around the concept of megalomania, God, Man and Money, it's a stirring combination from many excellent musicians.
Ayeron
Again with the concept albums. Similarities are strong between BE and Ayeron's The Human Equation. Similar music styles, the execution branches into less orthodox instruments in Ayeron.
Meshuggah
Avant-garde metal never sounded so brutal. Polyrhythms galore, Meshuggah has pushed the boundaries of what a human headbanger can take while still delivering one of the most outrageously awesome music videos ever in New Millennium Cyanide Christ. Who else gets away with being wasted and air-banding on a bus?
Godspeed you! Black Emperor
F#, A#, Infinity is a fantastic album dealing with the breakdown of society. Other music from Godspeed is just as good, but that's a favourite. The first song, The Dead Flag Blues, is the perfect thing to have on repeat while playing Half-life or Fallout.
Sigur Ros
If you've spoken with me about concerts, guaranteed I'd have brought Sigur Ros up. Their performance in Sydney was the most moving gig I've ever attended. These shows come highly recommended to anyone, regardless of your musical background and with a Labyrinth stamp of approval. They will make you laugh and make you cry.
Apocalyptica
Four cellos playing heavy metal. Must more be said?
