A lot of the bands I would've posted have already been done, so I have only Sonic Boom Six to add to the disscusion. They are a band with roots in ska but have added various elements for numerous other genres.

Belle and Sebastian. Don't think I've heard anything else like their Nick Drake style 90's indie.

Reel Big Fish (Ska)
How dare you sir, they are ska punk and not ska!!!! There is a huge difference between desmond Decker, Skatalites and the Supersonics than that American tripe you just mentioned.
Ok first off, calm down no need to get all uppity. Secondly, my mistake, I'm apologize for not specifying the type of ska but I'm pretty sure you're the only one that cares that much about it that you would point it out. I put ska at the end just so people had an idea of what to expect in case they actually looked it up. And technically it is still ska music just a sub-genre. Call it tripe(which I'm assuming is an insult in the U.K.) but I like it.

TV On The Radio - An eccentric mixture of electronica, punk, and soul music. Last year they released what was probably the best album of 2008, Dear Science.

Liars - Experimental dance-punk which is- for lack of a better term -weird. Just plain weird.

Portishead - One of the most influential trip hop groups in music is making a comeback starting last year.

I've gotta say Clutch [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=169785874] - they have this awesome metal/stoner/groove/jazz/blues/jam sound going on. Lol, sorry, that's the best I can describe it, each song is totally different. And the lyrics are awesome as well. They're amazing, check 'em out!

Hmmm...

Oingo Boingo - I'd try to explain it, but the best I can come up with is new-wave/orchestral/pop. Danny Elfman sang lead until the band broke up in 1995.

The Residents - Unclassifiable stuff with an underlying concept. Look up the video for "Harry The Head", as it's one of their more accessible songs

Poe - Electronic? Jazz-ish? Not sure where to put her...good, though.

The Murder City Devils - For whenever you listen to punk or rock and think, "this doesn't have enough organ in it..."

Honestly? You can't get much more unique then Primus. Or maybe the word I'm looking for is weird-as-hell. Meh, whatever.

Tool is as generic as a grey block of ... greyness compared to HORSE The Band. (That being their full title. "The Band" and everything)

Awesome band of awesomeness.

Nightwish, the album Once and before. Opera and metal, blended beautifully. Shame that went out the window when the new singer started, but eh.

Also, I cannot get this band out there enough, but Dark Tranquillity are amazing to listen to. Simply fantastic metal.

I've been getting bored with the music I've been listening to as of late.
What r some of ur favorite unique bands?
Either the band themselves is unique or the music/sound is unique.
I'll start with my most recently listened to unique band....
<img src="http://www.jesolo.it/photo/tool_logo.jpg" alt="tool>
Ten-minute shambling bass-feedback and meaningless lyrics for the win, although Aenema is a very good song.

Also: ITT people post the most obscure band they've heard of in an effort to sound cool.
actually if you read the lyrics and use your brain in a bit of an abstract way. Tool has some really deep lyrics.

oh and for a good band, I suggest listening to Beirut, really different from a lot of stuff iv listened to. truly great musicians.

These guys are obscure and relatively unknown, but their music is a blend of the most trippy yet heavy stuff. I didn't even know a band could pull that off till I heard them. Psychedelic/Metal? Psycho Metal? Who cares, they sound great.

The most original thing I can think of is the oldest works of Mortiis, an enigmatic musician from Norway. Nowadays he does some industrial-rock type of thingie, but his first works are something for themselves.

They range from half an hour to an hour in length and are composed of very calm, dark, somewhat medieval music, with doom-laden brass fanfares and slow synth melodies, among other things. All his works before his change of style are about a fictional world he made up in his head, which is described only with few, short lyrics and the music itself.
The music is very beautiful and brings to (my) mind pictures of Norwegian fjords and forests and old, dark castles.

Keiser av en Dimension Ukjent ("Emperor of an Unknown Dimension") is a particularly good piece of his, which can be found on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MWtoSQ9ovY

Other than that, Nów is a brilliant Slavic metal band with clean vocals of the kind I normally find detestable, but tend to like in their music. I think one should like the Polish language to enjoy their music though. I can especially recommend their songs "Gniazdo" and "Przebudzenie Uspionej Potegi", both findable on YouTube.
