Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - wild special effects used for comedy and to help pace the movie with an interesting story. What length would you go through for the woman of your dreams?
Night Watch and to a lesser extent
Day Watch - Good versus evil movies more interested in equalibrium than annihilation. Zany special effects (this is where Harrp Potter stole all thier ideas from) to a much more higher budget (as in ripping off Matrix) in the sequel, but never loses the feel of excitement and wonder. Makes people spend a lot of time just trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
El Mariachi - It still amazes me how many people have yet to see this movie. Especially with how popular Desperado with Antonio Banderas had gotten. Thie original though is a much better story about an average guy being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Low budget and terrible acting do nothing to diminish the high quality of this flick.
Leon the Professional - Best estranged love story. Ever.
Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels and
Snatch - Barrels is your average crime movie, just with outstanding story and cinematography. A much more humourous and friendly "El Mariachi." Snatch on the other hand keeps the humour but ups the ante on everything else.

The Vengeance Trilogy (Oldboy is one of them)
Oldboy - The best of the Vengeance Trilogy. If you can only watch one, this is it! These movies mess with your head. Gore, trauma, psychopathy of a slasher horror flick but with story and cinematography of a cult classic.
Also
Infernal Affairs was mentioned but I'd recommend the Amercianized
Departed instead. Not that the Infernal movies weren't great, but Departed is totally awesome and easier to submerge yourself into. Unless of course you're having to reverse my personal subtitle roles.
