The recent avalanche of disdain for Dragon Age 2 based on the demo has once again put me in the awkward position of having an opinion that few of my peers seem to share, in that I really liked what BioWare did with the demo, but anyway, that isn't what I wanted to talk about. I ask you, my fellow escapists, which game serieses do you have an unpopular opinion of, and how do you tend to react when discussing those games with people of opposite opinion?

Every opinion that I have is by default found unpopular by someone else.

I have not much interest in defending my opinion against someone with another opinion, because it's an opinion.
different tastes.

The same way I do when I disagree with someone on politics - softly and calmly destroy their opinions until they become so overwhelmed with rage they change the subject. Or I have a calm, intelligent debate that usually ends up being a discussion of various different playtrypes of game. Or I just flamewar it. Whichever I feel like.

I don't argue opinions because its useless. I do however, argue logic, which kinda makes me a hypocrite, but meh, its fun.

I really don't have unpopular opinions about video games since I don't play much. But I do have unpopular opinions about movies.

For example, I think Star Wars sucks. (Including Episode IV, V and VI)

I think that that is stupid. You cannot put life in a nutshell. Blah blah blah, fault finding, nit picking, ect.

You said it man. Anything you say on any forum anywhere you can essentially expect to get attacked in five minutes by somebody who assumes that because they prefer something or some viewpoint it is a scientific fact that it's better.

I also liked the demo, where did you see an avalanche of disdain though? I saw people saying things like "I was wrong to doubt bioware"? In any event, as I was saying I enjoyed the demo. Actually made me want to play the full game.

I find religion to be a useful, essential part of human society, especially in the modern world.

88% of the internet disagrees with that sentence. 7% are too busy writing responses asking for a study to back up the previous statistic.

EDIT: The remaining 5% were likely mad those two percentages didn't add up to 100%.

I only really have 2 "unpopular" opinions. I felt that Bioshock 2 was awesome even without a "Smart" undertone, especially with Rocket Ammo for the Spear Gun. Also that, while the pacing of the story and the overall scale was sadly rushed thanks to EA, Brutal Legend was fucking awesome. It made RTSes fun on consoles by not trying to be a watered down Starcraft with shittier controls. It really doesn't deserve to be another Cult Classic for Double Fine to add to the pile.

But if someone disagrees with me in general and is calm about it, I'm fine with it. But if they're assholes about it, then I subtly troll them while still validly debating them.

I simply stated that no matter where I go, almost everyone seems to think I'm wrong. I did not say I knew the secrets of life or was never wrong, I simply stated that on forums as well as in real life, no one ever believes me. Not whining, just stating an annoying pattern.

Perhaps I exaggerated a bit, but I was reading the thread about Dragon Age 2 Demo first impressions, and a good number of the posts detailed how much they thought that DA2 was being 'dumbed down' for the new installment, how it felt a lot more shallow than its predecessor, which I don't agree with.

I think that BioShock 2 is better than BioShock.

BioShock had nice themes and an interesting backstory, but that doesn't carry a game. It's terribly paced (worse than even Rockstar have managed, in places) and the story only turns up for the twist.

The biggest crime of the pacing comes with the twist too - it spends all that time building up to it, and then, when you reach the office door, what happens? Oh right, you're sent off for another hour to perform the bloody "blue key for the blue door" task that you've already done several times over.

I also felt that the twist failed, because they revolve it around a character that is not a character. I am a big defender on silent protagonists, but they should have looked at Half-Life. The whole thing going on between Gordon and the G-Man? That's interesting because of the G-Man, NOT Gordon! Same goes for Alyx; I care about what happens to her because she feels like a real person, I don't care how Gordon feels because he's meant to be the place-holder for me. So trying to attribute any big reveal to HIS personality alone doesn't work.

BioShock 2 gave me someone to give a crap about. Alright, they totally fucked up the moral choice system like it they did in the first, but up until the end it was quite interesting, because they made an attachment to a character that grew on me as well.

So yeah, that's mine.

I'd disagree on that point, I found the atmosphere of the game to carry it quite well. Though I agree that the final act was pretty lackluster.

Attributing the reveal to a well defined character wouldn't have worked for me, at all. The point was he was playing you. You did nonsensical and dangerous things, which were given more weight by the fact that the player was in control the entire time, and did the actions themselves. The character was created to be a puppet, and even with controller in hand, the player acts along for them the entire time. However, the final act fails, from the sense of being boring, but also for giving no real consequence to your new found knowledge. You still have to kill fontaine, just because? Both endings also tack on ending arcs to a character that wasn't there, it should have ended very distinctly with a player choice, something more complex than "Kill ze sisters or no."

BioShock 2 gave me someone to give a crap about. Alright, they totally fucked up the moral choice system like it they did in the first, but up until the end it was quite interesting, because they made an attachment to a character that grew on me as well.
I do completely agree with this though, the second's story was much more emotionally engaging.
Also, the neutral ending is by far the best in any of those games, and just a great ending in general.

True this. In addition, I did not like Fallout 3, I think good riddance to bad rubbish about Catherine, think Duke Nukem Forever should die in a fire and could care less about my disinterest in Bioshock.

I don't think Bayonetta did anything that Devil May Cry didn't do first, and better. And I thought Devil May Cry was a waste of my time.

I find religion to be a festering cloud of misinformation that kills people in brutal and sadistic ways and justifies it with a hand wave that has overstayed its time and needs to be eradicated as soon as it is practical to do so.

Despite being almost the exact opposite of your opinion, this is also a very unpopular view. I guess it just goes to show people in general don't like drama, huh?

Well, relative to this forum I actually really enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII. Relative to everything else though, I liked Digimon more than Pokemon. I definitely know I'm in the minority there.

The short campaigns fit the CoD series perfectly and are incredibly replayable.

RDR is less fun than GTA IV.

Old shooters don't hold a candle to the new ones - the gritty brown realistic CoD clones.

People defend RapeLay with the logic that if playing violent games doesn't make you violent, then playing a rape game won't make you a rapist.

I don't think it will make you a rapist.

I still think it's an incredibly offensive premise for a game.
