Blugh...I'm sorry, but the actual cutscene made me want to throw up. I always knew MOM was a terrible game, but I never realized before just how terrible it actually is. I found myself wanting to turn it off halfway though, and I don't think I would have made it even that far if it weren't for how amazing the Unskippable crew is. They took an absolutely unwatchable cutscene and made it barely watchable. That's talent right there.

Mein goit, Samus says "baby" more than an exceptionally eager porn star.
I could get behind this. But probably change that to totally brain-dead porn actress.

I can handle bad voice acting. It's even hilarious. Just look at Resident Evil. "Enrico!" "Yeah."

The problem here is that the voice actress sounds completely uninvested in what's going on. I wouldn't be able to handle an entire game of Samus' disinterested, monotone monologues. Plus, it just goes on and on, pointing out things that could just as easily been brought across through dialogue or flashbacks and a character's actions.
That's the problem I've had with this. I've been angry at this cutscene more than others - and I've seen bad cutscenes - but I couldn't understand exactly why. Now I know. You didn't need the VA, you could have had just on-screen text and it would have been exactly the same as what we had.

Adam: What are you doing here?

Samus: (I recounted the details of what brought me to this place, and then
asked what circumstances led the Federation here.)

Adam: That information is not for an outsider.

Appropriate response: And here I thought I was responding to a distress call. I didn't realize that a "baby's cry" literally meant I would be dealing with a petulant child. I'll just be back to my ship, then. Goodbye.
To be honest, that probably would have made the game better.

Hehe, how good to know that we need a very specific SOS-signal to actually convey an SOS now. I would've been screwed (and laughed at) otherwise. God, this is just the intro? Awful. I heard a lot of bad stuff about this game, but actually seeing part of it for myself is... urgh. Why is Adam in "standard space marine armour" when he's a general? Think of Star Wars, ever saw an officer in Storm Trooper armour? I guess you could argue for them needing protection, too, but it still feels off to me. And, damn, in conversation, she monologues that she talks or answers instead of actually talking or answering. Horrible story-telling. And the bit about Adam's authorization? Let's just say I have heard a lot of awful stuff about that as well. I suppose that bit at the end there was a first glimpse of what is to come.

By the way, you do know there is a series about Gordon Freeman's inner monologues? "Freeman's Mind", if I remember correctly. Pretty funny. And while he comes off as a bit of an idiot and a whiner for comedic effect, he's still a vastly superior badass to this incarnation of Samus.

From watching this clip, it seems like Samus and Adam had a fling back then, but things went sour (maybe she had his child and had a miscarriage?) so she left. Then when she meets Adam now, he's still mad at her.

Baby's cry, eh?

Please tell me that's an oblique reference to Firefly? Or not - maybe it's best Firefly not be associated with this.

Either way, I would have been quite happy with a Firefly quote in the Unskippable version, with Graham and Paul playing the part of Wash and Mal...

The thing I imagined for 'baby's cry' is it's basically the next step up on SOS signals. Where a standard distress call is used by freighters, privately-owned ships and the like, and means 'send help as soon as possible' and can be ignored by certain vessels (Military ships on an important mission, for example.) Baby's cry is a high-priority SOS where everyone, and I mean everyone, is to come and try to do anything possible to help.

Or maybe I'm just over analyzing it, meh.

The search for the pixel bits is what drove me crazy in this game, I just zoned out or made something to eat during the cinematics, so they didn't bother me that horribly and I loved the actual gameplay. Though I will admit re-watching these first cutscenes was rather painful.

Lol, "And last time we left our heroine she was whining"
"I had troubles remembering...."
"And she is still whining"

Why is this nothing like the Samus I grew up knowing... :( So lucky the Prime series was soo amazing

As unbelievable as it might seem...

It gets WORSE.

That's right... this cutscene is BETTER than some of the other ones that show up later.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I usually just pretend that the Metroid universe is intersecting with the Starcraft universe, and Samus underwent neural resocialization. That'd explain her droning voice and suicidal adherence to 'authorization.' Because I can't think of a single soldier who would wait for specifically worded orders (from a superior that needs to be contacted by radio) to use protective gear in an immediately hostile environment. Did soldiers in WWI wait until their officers 'authorized' masks when the gas started rolling in?

Well, if Samus had been there, she'd have been sucking down mustard gas until Adam got around to letting her put on her damn gas mask.

The worst thing about this game for me is that Samus was voiced (for grunts and death cries) in Prime by Jennifer Hale. Giving Samus dialogue isn't that bad an idea, Fusion did it fine, but why would you recast when you already had a fantastic voice actress for the part? Or - Why would you recast... for THAT.

I think all of Shamus's fans were crying for her after this game came out.
Yes. Yes we were. We were also incredibly angry of how they depicted Samus as some whiny person.

Also, many of us agree that this game may have name "Metroid", but it's not part of the metroid canon.

As I said last week, I always thought the criticism leveled against this game was over-exaggeration because that's what gamers do. I thought that there is no way they could make a Metroid game THAT bad. I was wrong. I don't know how it's possible but they managed to, in 15 minutes, destroy 20 years of female badassery.

Can we get the Prime games back please?

Mother: Other Mother is not a game I'd choose to play. Her voice keeps nagging at me...and I'm quite forgiving with voices. This may be due to her narrating *responses* we clearly heard just a split-moment before, but, argh! [sarcasm] I at least know now though that behind every strong woman, there is an urge for them to become submissively inclined to jerks and want a baby....probably from said jerk. [/sarcasm]

At least the commentary was great. Especially when Half-Life 2 came into the picture.

With as many people complaining about Samus's voice actress, when the real blame should be put on the writer of this trite AND the voice director. I feel sorry for Jessica Martin for the bad rep she's getting from fans of this franchise.

this game story segments are tedious and terrible but the game play is SO good its sad they couldn't find middle ground. Or get rid of the "spot the pixel" parts of the game

I sometimes like to believe that the voice-acting is actually exactly as it was meant to be.
Just imagine the recording studio, the actress doing endless retakes, the director always saying the same thing to her:

"Okay, that was nice. I feel we are really getting somewhere here.
Now, could you try sounding just a little bit more like an abused, emotionally dead housewife ?
Just try to visualise years and years of unrelenting physical and psychological violence that have driven you to the point of complete catatonic despair."

This theory has the added advantage of being able to explain why Samus´ relationship with Adam was written as it is.
