Horizon: Zero Dawn

I just don't have too much faith in Guerilla Games. The Killzone games have been mediocre at best, and let's just say as a fellow dutchman we don't have that blockbuster mentality required for games of this scale.

Added to that, the whole concept of robot dinosaurs is something that sounds cool on paper, but in practice I feel might be a bit too silly (for what appears to be a sincere attempt at world building).

I'll still be picking it up come release, but I'm setting myself up for a dud.
The videos I posted earlier were encouraging. The research and engineering they put into the machines alone sounds like more effort than is put into the entirety of some other open world games.

Like Eurogamer said though, most gamers won't care. For me it's that much more incentive to preorder.

Mass Effect Andromeda. I am waiting for the Yahtzee and Jim Sterling reviews, then I will be waiting a month or two for the microtransactions (what format they will be taking) to be shoved in, to determine if I get this game or not.

Well, I've actively been avoiding any sort of promotional material or trailers for this game for the last 4 months atleast, so maybe there is something out there that explains things in a way that makes the world gell more than it does for me at the moment. It's just that when I see footage of a robot crocodile entering a river my brain just goes 'WHY? HOW? IT'S A FREAKING ROBOT!!!' As well as why there's cavemen walking around that are perfectly articulate and intelligent, yet never seemed to have taken advantage of the highly advanced technology that's literally just walking around.

There are no games announced for this year so far that I'm "on the fence" about.

My hype thrusters for Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown are most likely going to explode before the game's release. Let me just put it bluntly: We're going back to Strangereal, and a lot of major players from the PS2-era Ace Combat development teams are taking us there.

I hope they have a statue in Oured to commemorate the Razgriz Squadron, and especially their destruction of the Strategic Orbital Linear Gun attack satellite that saved the city.
As long as they don't force drivel gameplay gimmicks like Assault Horizon's DFM, I'll be cool with it. It's fine if they even have the mechanic in as an option, just don't force me to use it ever. While I had a lot of beef with AH, the worst of it all were designated 'ace' enemies that could only be shot down in DFM.

There's only two games right now I'm actually waiting for: the new South Park (which I have faith in) and Red Dead Redemption 2, which is coming out in like 2046.

I keep seeing the name Horizon Zero Dawn, but have no buggering idea what it's supposed to be about. Open world sci-fi with robot dinosaurs apparently? Ever since Yahtzee made fun of the name I can't help but find it so utterly nondescript and meaningless that I have a hard time associating any meaning with it whatsoever. It's like a name you'd get out of a random name generator.

I mean honestly, can someone try to explain to me what that title is supposed to mean?

I guess that's the science fiction part of it, but we already have plenty of examples of submersible electronics ourselves so it's certainly no farther-fetched than walking animal-like machines (which we also have in far more primitive forms). Have you ever seen the videos of that Llama looking thing that can walk on ice and steep, uneven terrain without falling, all while carrying more weight than a typical human can?

The caveman are supposed to be tribes, and each tribe has a different attitude/relationship with the machines. Some avoid them completely while others can hack/corrupt them to use them against their enemies. It's sounds like the latter is one of the game's main antagonists. Machine behavior will also vary, depending on who or what they're around, whether they're in a pack or solitary, and of course the player character's actions.

According to the story lead, most of the big mysteries including the name will be revealed over the course of the game.

His past credits are Fallout: New Vegas and Borderlands 2 I think, so I personally don't know what to expect since I've never played either of those games.

If I had to venture a guess on name meaning, "Horizon" is likely a metaphor for a new frontier, while "Zero Dawn" meaning either a new beginning or zero has a more digital, binary application due to the machines' apparent dominance.

I thought DFM was actually kinda cool. I agree with the enemy ace thing, but I really liked getting in close and seeing bits and pieces get blown off the enemy planes.

Then again, I'm more the type for Spitfires and 109s anyway.

While I am excited for Horizon Zero Dawn, the gameplay that I have seen so far makes it feel a little too much like a 3rd person Far Cry game for me. Additionally the dialog and story seem shitty. Yet I still retain hope because I really wanna hunt down robot dinosaurs. I hope it is good.

I am also hopeful for Mass Effect. I mean I get that the original trilogy kind of ended with a limp dick. Because I still enjoyed the journey and I am down for another space RPG. I think approaching the game like it is a completely new IP might be the best way too look at it. We will see.

I was on the fence about Nioh and that turned out to be fucking amazing so....Shrug.

I really hope the new Spiderman doesn't suck and not seeing new footage of it doesn't really help matters.

I always thought it was heavily inspired by Warhammer 40K.

Well Event Horizon is commonly considered the only good Warhammer 40k movie. So in a sense we're both right.

Torment: Tides of Numenera

I want this to be good so badly. Inexile has done well in the past but I am fickle customer and it will be hard to make an acceptable spiritual sequel to what I consider to be the greatest game ever made.

I've been intentionally avoiding any feedback from those in the beta so..... we will find out this year. I hope.

The spectacle was cool and all but the loss of control over your own plane was terrible. Especially disorientating when you left the mode and the game could take you far away from other objectives. Not to mention the really dodgy moments where as you left DFM - you were plummeting into the sea/ground/a building. The game had you gain a short bit of invincibility after you left DFM, clearly as a way to get around the issue but bouncing off the sea/ground or a building was really immersion breaking. It kinda loses impact after being forced to use it a million times too.

Overall I prefer to fly and kill my way. Watching planes disintegrate up close is well and pretty damn cool, but not at that cost.

I just saw a Horizon: ZD commercial on ESPN, so they're definitely starting to market it. One thing is certain: it's a beaut. According to early impressions it also plays wonderfully and is certainly more ambitious than the Killzone series. We'll see how the open world and story progression are handled.

I will admit that I'm really hoping Mass Effect: Andromeda is good. However, I'm fully prepared for the idea that it's gonna suck because EA.

On, the Indie front, I'm interested in Little Nightmares. Looks like Inside/Limbo with the visual stylings of Coraline. If it's anywhere close to Inside/Limbo I'll call that a win.

And I know it's a while off, but Sunless Skies looks cool.

All of them? I have a 'wait and see' approach to any upcoming games. A game would need to be very impressive for me to consider a day one purchase.

For Honor - I have it on good authority there's a legit single player. But 'legit' these days is Titanfall 2 and Order 1886, ie begrudging 3 hour training for multiplayer
I'm waiting until it's $20 at most. Just lurking around the web and /v/ a lot of people seem pretty upset with the game. The single players is supposedly a joke and it uses P2P connection for the competitive multiplayer. There's also tons of the typical Ubisoft DLC nonesense
https://www.vg247.com/2017/02/14/for-honor-in-game-microtransactions-store-now-open-currency-packs-go-as-high-as-100/

Again, this is just what I've gleaned from my own browsing. I haven't played the game outside of the beta and even then I thought it was... fine.

OT:

Prey (Because it's not Prey and I feel like this game is having so many promises made about it that it could be a NMS lite situation)

Ghost Recon Wildlands (Because it's not Ghost Recon but I like the idea of an open world guerilla tactics game)

Andromeda (Because I've pretty much lost all interest in the franchise but I like RPGs and I like space so I'm still keeping tabs.)

Honestly I'm not aware of that many games coming out this year that I am genuinly looking forward to. Nier comes to mind but with combat from Platinum I'm pretty sure that it'll at least be good. Plus there's
Dat Ass

Gotta say I'm feeling good about a preorder. Thing is, I loved the grittiness and attention to detail of the Killzone games, and it looks like they've massively expanded upon that here. Game play looks solid, immense levels of R&D has gone into the machines you'll face to make them as dynamic as possible in their surroundings, as well as varying tactics to engage them, and it sounds like exploration is done more naturally than the fetch questing that most open worlds fall into. The big question will seem to be how the story is handled, and furthermore its pacing. However for me personally, story has always been an aside to the game play.
