Played it sucked at it and still keep going.. Man but that tracker beep is scary.
That tracker beep makes up for 75% of the stress of the game :D

Beep.....Beep...Beep-Beep-Beep! Oh sh** disconnect!
Part of the reason I've never got too far in the game is the whole "BeepBeepBeep - Sh*t I can still do this... just two more seconds .... DAMN" scenario. Trying to disconnect and wipe out any evidence of your being there is bloody tricky under that stress. It's possibly the best game sounds ever (except for the Facehugger scuttle in AvP1).

EDIT: playing the game now. it fucks up my resolution everytime i run it though
Try playing it in Dosbox or another windowed emulator.
Always, always use Internic as the first bounce, they have no security except a password that never changes, so when you disconnect you go there fast and erase the redirect log (but NOT the connect log because when you disconnect it leaves a log and it's strange to see someone disconnect when they never connected, they'll trace you anyways)

Oh and the tutorial says use at least 10 bounces, i use around 25, including some hard-to-crack systems banks, mainframes, etc (slows the trace)

As far as the resolution goes you can change it (to match your desktop) if your game is patched. (1600x1200 max resolution, hard to see though)

Cheers :)

I try and always go through a bank or two. Although it makes it harder to cover your tracks it gives you a lot more time till tracking.

I also have the compulsion to delete all my logs of every bounce so it take me more work to tidy up after myself than it does to do the mission. Getting complacent or cocky on the tidy ups is one of the major sources of my downfall.

It was an awesome game, I just found it that touch TOO hard... but it has some really nice features. I remember hacking my first bank and thinking "Heh, easy. Free Mone- Shit. They caught me."

It's also one of those games that makes you keep a pad and pencil by the computer, which the nerd in me loves!

I might pick it up again at some point - Does anyone know if it's Vista Stable?

Edit: Heh, you just made me download it - £10? Bargain.
WOrks fine under vista, just run it under a window.

I've played it and have it on steam, but I just can't get along with it...
Darwinia, the other one by that developer, is absolutely awesome though :-D

I'm running it out of Steam in Vist 64-bit and it seems to run fine. Haven't played it much since I upgraded to this setup though so can't be 100% sure. You can try running it from DosBox or something along those lines if you have issues though.

Check Youtube for tutorials. It's about covering your tracks. You really do have to think like a hacker though - it's fairly (fairly) realistic, under the hollywood hacker gloss.

Yeah, I played it! A very unique game. I still have the demo and full version somewhere on my harddrive.
If you like Uplink, you might also want to try out Introversion's other games, Darwinia and Defcon! They're not about hacking, but just like Uplink they're interesting and atmospheric games.

I usually only clean up my reroute logs at Internic and the Uplink test machine. The AI does NOT have access to the last level log undeleter so if you got a deleter lvl4 and do NOT erase the connection from *.*.*.* but just the "admin logged in" and connection rerouted logs, you're ok

Banks have a hyper fast passive trace, government agencies not so much (the GCD is faster than the academic db and the social security db though)

If you try and transfer money from a bank to your account you need to delete the logs at the bank AND the uplink bank or you WILL be caught(plus all the reroute logs obviously).

Edit : oh and to spice up the game go to http://www.modlink.net/ there's new themes, new gateways, some other mods (more names, more pictures, fix of that annoying super-slow-mo voice etc) :)

There bringing Darwinia to XBLA at some point, not sure when they are but it was recently stated that they are working on a port. I never played it though, what's it like?

Thanks for the tips, Will have to revisit this underrepresented gem of a game when I'm back infront of my own machine.

Hm, it's a bit hard to explain, it's kind of about controlling little guys in a virtual world to invade other territories. You can try the Darwinia demo from the Introversion website [http://www.introversion.co.uk/darwinia/downloads/index.html] if you want.

A good game, but I hate that if you get caught, your save file is deleted. I've never been able to finish the game because of that.

Wont worrie, were all friends hear.

As for the saved file. I know there's a editor somewhere, if you have a locked file then you can set it back a step. Like a revert to last save. Was always handy but quite a cheat.
