I have failed repeatedly at Uplink. It's a great idea but as a game has the clear flaw that there's no way to understand why you fail when you fail. At best you notice the net beginning to close when various missions aren't open to you specifically.

Then you just die. No explanation, no help, nothing.

There are other problems, the game stops generating low level missions with enough regularity so if you invest poorly in gear / software you can end up kicking your heels doing one mission per in-game day. The map of the globe really needs to give you a handful (rather than one) slot to save routes so you can cover your tracks more efficiently. The file copier / deleter thing is a bit weird. And you can apply various bypasses to security systems which are unknown (marked "?") which sort of gives away what they are - and negates them.

Yeah, I played it! A very unique game. I still have the demo and full version somewhere on my harddrive.
If you like Uplink, you might also want to try out Introversion's other games, Darwinia and Defcon! They're not about hacking, but just like Uplink they're interesting and atmospheric games.
There bringing Darwinia to XBLA at some point, not sure when they are but it was recently stated that they are working on a port. I never played it though, what's it like?
Hm, it's a bit hard to explain, it's kind of about controlling little guys in a virtual world to invade other territories. You can try the Darwinia demo from the Introversion website [http://www.introversion.co.uk/darwinia/downloads/index.html] if you want.
Will check it out tonight, sounds like a good game to me.
If you cry, you're not the only one.

That is, crying with POWER.

You forgot Multiwinia.

EDIT: Shit, double post, my bad.
Wont worrie, were all friends hear.

As for the saved file. I know there's a editor somewhere, if you have a locked file then you can set it back a step. Like a revert to last save. Was always handy but quite a cheat.
I'm not so sure about that, the game actually truncates and garbles the save file when you "die"

You can however backup your save (\Program Files\Uplink\users\whatever.usr) regularly and if you die re-write over the truncated file, better to lose a few days than the whole game :)

Jesus, you mean someone other than me and my friend has played that game? It was great fun.
Yes, its one of the best games iv ever found that wasn't a great hit. Iv heard of it hitting XBL along with another game they made before it. No word yet.

Sounds interesting, but seems less than so. Maybe I'm just not into text games anymore.
Yeah, I would half class it as a Text game, as well as a math game. Maths may not be visable but theres timers and crap everywhere!!
I think it's on Steam, might have to get it actually, I'm interested again. I think I remember my friend convincing me that the game was real (don't judge, I was like 11-12 and retarded).
Im glad you got over your retardism! Or it could be like that show that used to be on Channel 4 where people played a computer game where you murdered people and then someone killed that person the way you planned it in the game!
Ahh that would have been tragic. Could have been interesting though, I coulda fleeced em good! Money for counseling and all that.

Could I be thinking of another game then, this way of backing up though looks good to me. If there still a big enough following I wouldn't mind writing an Auto backup script that runs every time you turn on your pc once you install it.

Also, to who told me about Dawinia, I played miltiminia and its one of the best games I have ever played. Why can these guys make games that not only play well. But look fantastic.

I gave up on Uplink.

Moved on to the friendly game of DEFCON.

aka "Global Thermonuclear Warfare" (Guess which dev team has been watching 80's classic movie "Wargames"?)

Introversion, thanks to Uplink, DEFCON, and the *winia series have earned my respect and money. And by earned my money I mean if I see a game developed by them, I WILL buy it.
