Because we are constantly killing each other for (most of the time) no reason
actually most of the time, there is a reason. It's that we find plenty of reasons to kill. We are natural hunters, and when we no longer have to hunt for food, our desire to kill remains unsatisfied. This true with other species as well.

Ty Op, its about time someone said this. I for one am sick of all this losing faith in humanity crap. We have achieved such incredible things in the last 50 years alone let alone during the rest of our existence. Sure we are not perfect beings and we do have negative things in our nature past and present. We have still achieved so many incredible things in spite of this.

If you love your animals so fucking much you might as well go live with them.See if THEY wouldn't kill YOU for food(or even themselves).
So 21st century industry is equal to ancient humans cutting trees down in terms of pollution?

If you are joking it was completely lost on me.

Because we, if I'm not mistaken, are the only species that naturally, almost instinctively, hates itself. A colony of ants doesn't fight itself, but a colony of humans would.
I take it you've never lived in a neighborhood that allows cats then? - Animals kills eachother, including their own children, even for sport, and none of them have any concept of right and wrong in this regard. There's no punishment, there's no debate, there's not even a single doubt in their minds about doing wrong.

Good analogy though, I can see why Europeans failed to settle North America and the whole human race has destroyed itself while our Panda overlords are trying to save us from extinction. Oh wait.

The Virgo said:
Yes, that is true, a lot of disease has been eradicated, but there are still a lot more.
My point still stands - How many cures have the rest of Earth's species produced against illnesses?
Here's a hint: None.

The Virgo said:
But if you think about it, it hasn't really improved the human race as a whole very much. Sending guys into space didn't cure diseases, didn't build colonies (unless you include the ISS, but it's not really a colony) or anything like that.
Yes, space exploration is in its infancy. You mentioned cockroaches as being superior to us, how is their space programme coming along? Who is doing better than us? You don't start climbing a ladder by appearing at the top.

The Virgo said:
More GOOD than humanity? Ha! For every good thing we have done we have done two bad things.

As we speak, people are getting raped, murdered, abused or beheaded.
Again, noting that animals will merrily destroy the enviroment unless another animal is killing them in large enough numbers, and that animals kill eachother for sport without any social repercussions or any internal debate regarding the morality of it, I would say that non-sentient animals have done the same amount of good as they have built colony vessels capable of interstellar travel.

Tell me, what species defines what good is? What species has enabled the possibility of it ever occourring on this planet?

Millions of animals are suffering too. Do you see them working to solve their problems like we are?

Non-sentient good to evil ratio is 0:Infinity because they are incapable of doing good in the first place.

Actually all the points you listed are reasons for me to think that humans are a very degenerate species.

Yes, we are absolutely great at devoloping tools. (Such as inocculations and Space Shuttles) But we almost show no developement in regards to our Humanity.

Or to put it more generous: For every step on the path of ethical progression we take three steps back and half of us doesn't move at all.

For example: It took us almost all our history to get rid of slavery and to get women accepted as equals (in some parts of the world).

We can fly into space, yet we still start wars over something as stupid as religious belief. That is absolutely pathetic.

Humans may excell at technological progression but their progression rate at being human is absoluetely mind-boggling.

Of course there is the point of "Hey, what species is better than us?" And yes, we do not have a sentient species on earth that holds up to us. But call me Sci-Fi-Nerd or an Agnostic, but from time to time I like to image that there is a big alien race watching us. And what would they see? "Hey, these folks aren't worthy of our warp technology. They probably would put us into prisons if we showed up, they even do that to their own kin!"

SO WHY DOES EVERYONE ACT LIKE WE'RE NOT!?

Discuss! (sorry it's brief but my brother is shouting at me)
Because with all the positive things we've done, we've done a lot of negative things to get there. With nuclear bombs we've made many large areas of land uninhabitable for the next 10,000 years or so, we've filled cleared off thousands of square miles full of trash and other waste, we systematically eliminate dozens if not hundreds of species every year, and the quality of life of probably more than half of our population is pretty shitty. Yeah, we have done a lot of cool stuff, but we should never forget we aren't perfect and that there is always room for improvement.

On a different scale, yeah.Just imagine where would we be if we stopped progressing in society. No new inventions like the automobile(apparently it harms the environment),no factories to create the stuff we use every day,no mining for resources, nothing.Would be pretty fuckin' rad, huh?

ACTUALLY NO,IT WOULDN'T.IT'D BE PRETTY FUCKIN' RETARDED.

I'm sorry, but that's not true.

There are plenty of instances where ant workers turn on their queen for no apparent reason, thereby destroying their own colony. And chimps are also known to prowl around the jungle in gangs looking to kill other chimps from neighboring colonies just for the sake of killing them.

OT: Yes, humans rock!

Sure there are a couple a shitheads around, but you take the bad with the good.

You say "apparently" like it was just discovered recently that cars cause pollution.

I'd rather live in a world that is the same as today in 50 years than live in a shithole.

I don't abhor hunting, or self defense, or fighting to survive. That is totally necessary for the species to come along. I find no problem with this at all.
I hate that we can just decide that we don't like a race, a religion, or a political party and decide, "Hmm, let's kill MILLIONS OF THEM." We saw it during WWII and the Holocaust, then Russia under Stalin, then in Mao's communist China. Each one killed more than the last. Animals kill because they have no conscious of what is right or wrong. They simply do what they are programmed to do. A human can know full well that killing is wrong, and do it anyways because they find it fun. People fail to realize how close we were to the actual end of our race during the 60's due to the big nuclear stand off between the USSR and the US. If those bombs would have flown, the entire earth would have been uninhabitable for an unnervingly long time. There would have been next to nothing left. We came too close for comfort.

I don't have a clue why they do.

We've done things that would boggle the mind. We've looked at the very building blocks of life and found ways to wield them. We've created the largest repository for discussion and knowledge, accessible almost all over the world, often via a device smaller than a wallet. We've created new life that has never before been seen on this earth. And we've pushed the limits of our understanding of everything we see.

We are the most varied and flexible species we have ever seen, and we burn through every obstacle we face like a wildfire through dry brush.

Sure, we may occasionally falter, but then we're only human. We're individuals, each with our own dreams, flaws, and views on how the world should work, and that's never going to change. But the simple fact that we've progressed so far despite those facts is INSANE. By all rights we should be dead a thousand times over, but we aren't. We push on, and never give up until we've either succeeded or proven the endeavour physically impossible.

Boiled down, there only way to describe humanity:

Indomitable.

Since you're Danish, I take it you haven't heard of Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Richard Ramirez or anybody like that. Google them.

We actually have quite a few strays that live around us. The thing is though that they don't kill each other for "sport". It's all about instincts. They don't do it for fun, unlike a lot of humans. It's because of territory reasons.

Also, don't forget that the conquistadors fucked over the Aztecs, Incas and others HARD. Those were some heartless son of a bitches. And then, many years later, the Americans made the Indians march through the cold to the reservations, many dying along the way. Do some research.

Let's not also forget Hitler. Animals don't imprison millions of other animals and gas them.

And yet because we are so awesome, we will bring it to many other planets and their inhabitants too! Sharing is caring.

Humans are freaking badasses. Every single one of us is the product of millions of years of pure, unadulterated carnage. Every living being on the Earth trying its damndest to completely obliterate everything in its path, all the way down to the molecular level. And we STILL came out on top.

Seriously, every time you go outside, breathe a nice deep breath, make a big smile, and kick the crap out of the closest tree you can find. Earth's been trying to grind us under the wheel since we first crawled out of the ocean, and we've kicked its ass. Grand Champions, 500,000 years and counting baby! We're on a roll! Now we just need to get out into space and take our game to the big leagues. NO ONE IS SAFE!
This is an awesome post, I agree entirely. Screw anything-else, humans number 1! (Seriously, all animals kill each other but only humans have invented human rights, laws of war, justice systems, child protection etc plus also art.)

Yeah. Malaria, AIDS, river blindness, all of them were cured yesterday. You probably just didn't hear about it.
