He's good looking. That's all that matters for most people to consider someone attractive. That actually one of the few thing men and women have in common.

Well, he does have those dreamy eyes...
granted, all the dreams are of brutally maiming people and drug-induced psychotic breaks, but hey. We can't all be family-friendly.

It's true, my girlfriend adores him. I have to memorise the definition of insanity speech for .... "bedroom" purposes.

I don't find it at all surprising. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DracoInLeatherPants]

Seriously. Sephiroth. Edward Cullen. Draco Malfoy. Arthas. Saren. Loki. Jack Sparrow. Seto Kaiba. Light Yagami. Lelouch Lamperouge. Vegeta. Anyone played by Cillian Murphy. The Joker.

Not a new phenomenon.
Pretty much this. It should be noted that it's a case of "Loud minority" when the murderous psychotics get fangirls, and at that, it's (mostly) just erotic fantasy, not an actual indicator of the kind of men these women are into.

Too right, mate.

Just saying, if I was actually interested in dating the kind of girls I ordinarily fap to... Well, let's not go there.

They do realize Corporal Hicks is in Aliens Colonial Marines, right?

More On topic: It's not such a surprise honestly, he does look rather attractive, seems pretty strong-willed, doesn't give a fuck about societal conventions, you could argue has a certain sense of humor, kills annoying upperclass douches and has some sort of "tragic" backstory that makes him mysterious.
Some of these traits of personality, you wouldn't want in your real-life partner, but in a fantasy-background, they can be quite exciting.

Michael Mando's delivery is just amazing. Seriously, it's just completely hypnotic.

Sure he's a violent, sadistic, and very insane thug, but every word he says is entrancing, and he just takes over every scene he's in. There's a reason people went nuts over the insanity speech. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Errrrr. Straight woman here and what is this fuckery.

Then again I was never really one for the 'tragic mentally unsound villain/anti hero types'
I like them as interesting characters but as romantic interests? ...Egh. Erm. No. No thanks. That's way too much baggage for any one to put up with.

He's...decent... looking. I guess. If you like that kind of thing.

ugh, really? he's not attractive to me in the slightest, i think it's the whole psychotic thing, major no no in my books, i've never really understood that whole thing of taking properly evil/jerk guys and making them "misunderstood" or "just needing some love". It's a tad creepy.

Not attractive at all.

I'd fuck him. I'm going through a confusing phase right now and sex with a man that looks like DAT I would do. Y'know, if he wasn't crazy as fuck and would turn the sex into rape, then burn me alive probably while fucking me.

But if he wasn't crazy... Daayyuum.

He did not display any signs of sadism, if anything killing just made him apathetic, like a chore.

Physical looks and demeanor are the go-to rationalization of his popularity. I don't agree to attributing it to his 'bad-boy attitude' or the 'change a man' trope since he is neither, he's lost his mind and an ultimatum might have been a cause. However he does not exist in a vacuum, he has relationships in the game and women may be partial to those aspects. Something that I noticed while playing and what made him a sympathetic but eerie character.

I'd actually be curious how gay men perceive him.

Don't really see what's so surprising...

Have you seen the amount of fan art there's about Harley Quinn? She's done some seriously really fucked up shit and there won't be any shortage at all of hardcore male fans.

It's not really about the character's insanity. It's about the looks. It's not about imagining having a stable lasting relationship with them. It's about imagining a quick sexy fuck to get your rocks off.

At least I hope...

This is a bit surreal because 5 minutes before seeing this thread, a completely straight male friend of mine told me that Vaas is "his type of a man" and that it appears he adores insane characters. So, maybe men are not as vocal, but attraction to insanity does not seem to be gender related (and I'm sure many men have fantasies about being dominated by some insane woman). Though, due to Twilight and 50 shades of whatever, women look like a bigger offender.

Personally, I find insanity kinda off-putting, but I cannot deny that some actors and characters look hot. The problem is when people start warping said characters by slapping imagined "He's just a tortured soul and will get better if I help him" characteristics. No, he's not. He needs professional help, not a good fuck with you. And that's kinda the heart of the problem; people don't like insane characters because they want those characters to torture them and rape them. They like those characters because they are good looking and they think they can fix them (with methods of dubious quality).

Sometimes literally.

OT: I can sort of see why people'd be attracted to him, physically. Well built, slender look, good facial structure, actually avoids the uncanny valley for the most part.

Sure he's a psycho, but he's an attractive psycho and that makes all the difference.

This happens for the same reason that Ted Bundy was getting female fan letters and marriage proposals during his trial.

Some people are just stupid/crazy and think the person is just misunderstood or can be changed, hell this even happened with that piece of shit who shot up a Colorado movie theatre.

It is a symptom of failing mental health, thinking you can change a psychopath, either that or a deranged fantasy.

Oh? Shooting your brother through the throat at close range (Which is much harder than the body, or even head) isn't sadistic? Trying to burn you alive isn't sadistic? The torture series starring Michael Mando (Really excellent, funny, black, bleak, and charming as hell) wasn't sadistic? Vaas is sadistic. That's a base element of his character, frequently explored in the game, and surrounding materials.

He alternates. Sometimes he's discussing things with you, sometimes he regards you as a confidante, and then he'll try to kill you. Likewise, he'll laugh about torture and killing, talk about philosophy in a violent manner, and at different points, he has different attitudes towards things. He's unstable.

Physical looks and demeanor are the go-to rationalization of his popularity.
I definitely agree. Yes, he's ripped. But he's not really all that sexy. Especially not when you consider that "ripped" and "badass" feature much less frequently in women's determination of what is sexiest.
I don't agree to attributing it to his 'bad-boy attitude' or the 'change a man' trope since he is neither, he's lost his mind and an ultimatum might have been a cause.
Definitely. I don't think it's a fandom narrative. It's not that people think they can change him: He has no redeeeming features. He'll rape you, press you into slavery, and won't even remember it.
However he does not exist in a vacuum, he has relationships in the game and women may be partial to those aspects. Something that I noticed while playing and what made him a sympathetic but eerie character.
For me really what did it was the performance. Mando gave it his all, and he's just hypnotic. I truly believed he was completely unhinged and deranged.
I'd actually be curious how gay men perceive him.
That would be interesting.

Taking the Lindsay Ellis approach, eh?
