I've been told before that I have horrible taste in music, that my collection is so small that I'm comparable to a caveman.

I've never understood music. I like some music but I don't go crazy for it.

I thought my library of 86 was pretty big, but apparently all of my friends have music libraries in the triple digits and a few acquaintences of mine have libraries in the 4 digits.

What exaclty is so great about music that people collect so much of it?

My own collection is a mixture of genres. some rock, some pop, some j-pop, j-rock, one jazz (Sweet L.A. courtesy of Miracle of sound), some country, two raps, and some soft music I can't quite classify.

The one genre I absolutely hate is Metal and that's just my own taste.

I want to know what is the value of music and why does it have that value with people.

The value of music is that it can help someone express themself or just provide some good background noise. Music can also be seen as a reflection of who you are and different noise patterns and lyrics can also affect how you feel. If you like to get up and dance you might like pop or hip hop or dance (duh). If you are rather rebellious or angry you might like rap, rock, metal, or screamo. Music is whatever the listener wants it to be. Music can be an escape, an inspiration, background noise, something to keep you company, or something to vent through. I think that answered your question.

This part of your post is just full of terrible generalisations.

I like all kinds of music from Classical to Hip-hop and even a bit of death metal. I think there's a bit of misinformation going around that if you like one type of music, you're stuck in a group that likes that music and doesn't like anything else. It's utter crap.

I own 12 albums.

6 by Queen.

A few made from songs I downloaded.

Don't really get much chance to listen to music.

wow, there's books and books on this kind of topic...so much to say. But I'd say that many people have a hard time relating emotions and dealing with them...art in all forms helps that process. I'm a musician and music has healed my life more times than I can count, I know that i'd be a depressed curmudgeon with nothing going on if it weren't for music.
Music defines parts of my life, certain people and relationships. I does more than add to life for me, without it, life isn;t worth living.

however, I know a lot of people with your kind of mentality and kind of understand it, in one way I think that I'm at a disadvantage NEEDING music to survive while you don't, but on the other hand I kinda feel bad for you that you're not getting the amazing experiences from loving certain music.

I'm not givin ya crap, just speakin my mind...I wouldn't worry about if your missing anything...I don't understand why people love MLP, so I guess I'm missing out on that

No offense but how old are you? I didn't really start listening to music until I was out of highschool myself.

I'm a massive metal fan. There, I said it. I like metal music. Not all of it, there are bands I dislike, so I'm not this raving mad fanatic who claims all metal to be awesome. I also like reggae music, as well as a sub genre known as Finnish reggae. Points to anyone figuring out the origins of the genre. ;D

To me, music is a way to pass the time, and to fill an emotional void. When I'm feeling tired and I need to get some work done, some brutal trash will get me going nicely. When I'm just looking to chill, I'll listen to some smooth reggae beats. I don't like metal music that's all noise and grunts, I think that music needs a melody. Strangely enough, I've fallen asleep listening to Cannibal Corpse once. I had a nightmare.

I used to be this total dick who refused to listen to anything but metal. Then I totally became enlightened and started to open my mind to new types of music. I'll still dislike most rap-songs, but not all. I actually tried listening to some, when I felt that disliking something without trying is kinda silly, but it was a very bad experience for me. On a side note, PM me if you think you know of a rap-album that will change my mind. :D

So all in all, I really like music and what it's brought into my life. It's always there for me. Especially Judas Priest. *throws out horns*

Rocka Rolla.

If you want a REAL opinion on the value of music, talk to some one who is in their late 50's or 60's.

*ERASED TO PREVENT FUTURE FLAME COMMENTS*

Anyway, just listen to the music YOU like. Nobody can tell you what to listen to. I have everything from jazz to J-Pop on my iPOD and if anybody looks at my music selection, I admire it. I don't care what they think about music, I enjoy it.

I need to calm down. Cute picture time.

What were we talking about?

people dance to pop? i dont think so... and rap (REAL rap, like ) is about the trouble growing up in the ghetto. screamo is a subgenre of emo... none of them have anything to do with rebellion or anger.
Music is about expressing an idea or emotion, just like some films/books or even some games.

Yes, it's possible to dance to pop music.
People can dance to pretty much any kind of music.

What I meant by if you are rebellious or angry at someone and you listen to rap, metal, or screamo is that you could be using it to rebel or piss someone off somehow. For example, say someone did not like swearing so you played some rap music with plenty of swearing to piss them off. That would be how that particular person chose to use that music.

That was what I was trying to say when I was talking about the different things people use music for.

Since my music library is primarily video game music, a lot of it is nice because it is tied to particularly emotional or scenic moments in video games I've played (though a lot of them are just aesthetically pleasing tracks on their own).

I know some people like it because certain songs resonate with them and express emotions that they feel quite well, too.

Personally, for me, it's the same as looking at anything a person would consider pretty. It's just got a pleasing effect on my mind for a bit, though it loses its effect if I overexpose it.

All I can say is music is amazing. I have both listened to, played and created music and without it, my life would be meaningless.
