Valve Details Steam Features for Portal 2 on PS3

Valve has clarified the Steam features coming to the PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2, which include a free PC copy of the game.

Valve first revealed that Steam would be coming to the PlayStation 3 along with at E3 2010 [http://www.amazon.com/Portal-2-Playstation-3/dp/B003O6E3C8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302717372&sr=8-1]. A recent press release has detailed every feature that's coming along with it.

Portal 2 might be the first title to support Steam on a console, but it's starting off with a rich feature set. PlayStation Network users will first link their PSN accounts with their Steam accounts through the game. New users can also create a Steam account right there if necessary.

Once linked, a Steam overlay will give access to both Steam and PSN friend lists at the same time, allowing players to chat and check friend statuses. Most importantly, players will be able to engage in cross-platform play (between PC and PS3) in Portal 2's co-op mode [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/conferences/paxprime2010/8073-PAX-2010-Portal-2-Co-op-Preview]. PSN trophies and Steam achievements will also be earned at the same time.

Steam functionality will save both co-op games and single-player games online in the Steam Cloud so players can continue their game on any PS3, though Valve doesn't mention being able to go from a PS3 to a PC. As previously announced, Valve is doing gamers a solid by giving Portal 2 PS3 buyers a free copy of the PC version on Steam. An in-box code redeemed on a computer will add the game to a Steam library.

Some may have once considered the PS3 a waste of time [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/77826-Gabe-Newell-Calls-PlayStation-3-A-Waste-of-Time], but Sony at least allowed Valve to create some sweet cross-platform functionality here. Steam isn't coming to the Xbox 360 version of Portal 2 because of what is likely a conflict of interest for Microsoft.

For more specific information, check out the Steam Knowledge Base for Portal 2 on PS3 certain ARG rumor [https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5477-WPJM-9388] comes true.

Valve appears to have a nigh-indominable leg up on its only competition, Windows Live.

Well, I guess Sony proved Gabe wrong.

It's pretty impressive (assuming it all works) that Sony are willing to work with Valve to that level. I can't see Microsoft allowing cross platform content anytime soon.

That is brilliant news to me! I love Valve as a developer, but as I've only got a PS3 it's been incredibly hard to follow them. (Resorting to staying at a friends house for days at a time to catch up on Steam is embarrassing!) I can't see a downside to this Sony-Valve mini partnership; the possibilities set up by being able to play with any friends on the PC & PS3 simultaneously... plus support for cloud saves! Absolute class again Valve! ^_^

Windows live is massive failure to my eyes. Windows live is not supported in my country so games that use it will be pirated. I got a great games library on my Steam though.

So I read the knowledge base article and it specifically says that PS3 saves are not compatible with Mac or Windows. Does this mean that I can play on PC and go to PS3 but then I'm stuck on my PS3? Thats kind of a bummer, I was hoping for full two-way transitions of saves.

Or I can just buy it on the PC to start with, and get added benefits like saving $15 ($10 cheaper to start, plus an extra $5 off for pre-purchasing), a free copy of Portal 1 (another pre-purcahse bonus), the ability to use a mouse and keyboard instead of a Dualshock 3, not being tied to PSN while I play, very low risk of being sued by Valve because I did something they didn't like, and not being told I have no self respect by Gabe Newell because I use a competitor's product as well.

Valve, I love you guys, but you could add a real-life working Portal gun to the PS3 version, and I'd still just buy the game for PC. Fuck Sony.

Calling Windows Live "competition" is a bit too generous.

Its like saying a guy with a broken leg is competing against a Ferrari in a race.

Do you mean split-screen? Because if so the PS3 version will most likely have it. But the PC version won't.

Also, the PS3 and PC versions use 2 separate formats of disks, so you can't use one with the other.

I mean that, using the code from the PS3 version, and registering that to my steam account, so that i can co-op w/ someone playing that PS3

What would be the use for split-screen on PC? It's not like you can plug in two keyboards and mice.

Oh. Yes you'll be able to do that. PS3/PC users can co-op together.

You could plug in a controller and use that. But it probably wouldn't look too good on smaller monitors.

Yes. It's cross platform. PS3, mac and PC all can play togther.

Xbox is... well... forever alone.
