Half Life 2 wasn't that good a game. I know I'll probably be branded a troll for saying this, but it was mediocre at best. Team Fortress 2 is by far better. For god sake, theres no story but the characters are instantly more likeable than any in Half Life. And don't even get me started on Half Life 2's gameplay...

I dought L4D and L4D2 were competing against HL2 >:\
Since the first is...well...dead
and the second is just a knockoff of the first.

I'm not going to get into it, but saying they we're trying to compete with HL2 with the current releases is just a fat lie.

So all we need is for Valve to make a game that will out sell HL2 and then they will make a new HL to beat that. I welcome the release of Portal 2.

I'm surprised that they still compare their new game to HL2. Figures in sales yes I could understand sort of comparing to that in the long run but that's about it really.

Valve: Everything We Do Is An Initial Disappointment That's Its Not HL2 Ep 3
So true. I liked Portal, but I could honestly careless about anything else until they release the new Half Life title.

And how much did you Macbook Pro cost? Cuz i bet i paid $1000 less for my PC, which does all that, too. That's the real issue. Macs are freaking expensive and if you game, it's just easier and more cost effective to get a PC. $1500 for a Mac that can game vs. $600 for a PC that can do exactly the same thing. And most Macs can't handle games like L4D2.
What, exactly, is your point here? Macs can handle HL2. Macs have been capable of handling HL2 for quite some time. Cost doesn't change that fact.

Back on topic: I can understand what the guy is saying. HL2 was/is epic. The only things that I can think of that would be more epic would be... Releasing Episode 3, and then giving us a Half-Life 3.

I was expecting to see something about competing for resources and time with episode three. That would make sense. This however just seems a bit silly.

In regards to all the people saying "Half-Life 2 wasn't all that great/is overrated."

That is your OPINION, not a fact. At the time, it was exceptionally well designed, stunningly beautiful, atmospheric as hell, smart, and the characters were the best ever seen in a videogame. There's a reason the game got the scores it did, even if you personally didn't enjoy it.

I know what I just said comes across as Valve-fanboyism but I get annoyed whenever anyone states their opinion as though it were the only one worth listening to.
Even at the time it was released, I found it awful. And what's funny about the valve fanboyism is that if someone didn't like it, they are labeled as a troll.
Meanwhile if oh lets say Nintendo gets bashed in a thread, 90% of the escapist users will agree but they won't be labeled as a troll.
Not to mention I've seen a lot of Nintendo hate threads that NEVER get locked but have about 10-20 pages of hate and trolls. So its pretty annoying seeing a Nintendo News/Gaming thread having pages upon pages of hate and never being locked. But no one is accused of being a troll. Just look at the first person who didn't like HL2. He got quoted twice and they labeled him as a troll.
Plus, I never liked Valve to begin with, other than Team Fortress 2, their games were boring to play and this is my opinion.

As others have pointed out, while Half-Life 2 was certainly a gem in its day, I think much of the recurring praise for the game is more due to the (borderline excessive) loyalty of VALVe's fanbase.

It was good, yes. It was successful, yes. However, the level to which people (apparently everyone on the internet, anyway) insists on comparing ALL FPS titles to HL2 is not only obnoxious and unwarranted, I believe it's damaging to the gaming community as a whole.

Off my tirade and back on-topic: I'm not surprised.
I didn't like it at all. And I'm not comparing it to other FPS. That's just silly.

Half Life 2 wasn't even that great. It's as overrated as FF7.
It was great to begin with? Half Life 2 was shit. An overrated piece mind you. Then again...Valve is an overrated developer too.
I think the 13million people who bought the game would like a word with you as well as all the people who are eagerly awaiting HL2 Ep3
Theres nothing wrong with Valve, aside from their work ethic (L4D2 being an expansion-pack disguised as a retail game) and time-keeping with regards to Ep3
I agree with the FF7 thing though...I was told to get into JRPGs I should play it and I did not discover the gleaming pinnacle of JRPG heaven but instead found out what a turd would look like spread across a few discs...then you randomly battle that same turd
Let them. I didn't Half Life 2. AT ALL!

Oooookay...So...Whats not to like about the gameplay?...You have a gun that shoots and things fall dead...Its the same as any FPS
For the record, TF2 sucked ass

I like to think of it as the "Star Wars: Clone Wars" of Valves IPs due to the Cel-Shaded kinda look and general shoddiness
Just my opinion though before anyone starts and I have to get all up in ya'll grills
Actually, I can't pin my dislike of the gameplay to any specific reason. It was just... boring (for me) to shoot enemies, which is a bad sign for any FPS. For any GAME, really.
