To be fair, TF2 is making them bloody rich at this point, and adding co-op to portal 2 in my opinion was the only way they could validate releasing portal 2 at full retail price. Even then, eight hours of singleplayer and from what I hear a fairly short mutiplayer isn't worth full retail price, again, in my opinion. Still, no point complaining as at the end of the day, more content for the buyer = good stuff.

As long as the single-player content is worth the price of the game, I don't see any reason not to include multi-user modes. For people with friends and such.

I seem to be missing the context to this article.

Or am misunderstanding. You mean as in not having any single-player games at all, or just including multiplayer modes?

Apparently because they included a co-op mode in Portal 2 Valve is abandoning the single-player game design.

WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?

Umm: The original Half-Life had multiplayer. Half-Life 2 had multiplayer. The only Valve game that doesn't have multiplayer is Portal.

Every single other game in their catalogue past and present has a multiplayer component.

Yep, this has been true for years. Not since what, Half Life 2? have they made a full single player game.

Damn you Valve.
What about the original Portal?

The truth hurts.
How can anyone forget this, unless they are, like, 15?
HL1 gave way to CS and TFC (Though TF came from Quake, I think).

It's just that their singleplayer experiences haven't suffered for it, like some developers.

Deathmatch says otherwise.

what are you talking about? did they actually say this was the way the company was going or are you just making wild generalizations? (I can't see HL (episode?) 3 being Multilayer, well maybe Co-op if anything)

Did you play portal 2? Because even at 8ish hours long, the single player alone was nearly worth the price of admission, it was extremely good (well story wise, it lacked in challenging puzzles but hopefully community maps will make up for that).

Half-Life 2 came with Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. Not to mention the countless multiplayer mods that were built on it.

A few hours of greatness sure, but not a full game. Just like CoD or most FPS games. The single player parts are lacking, just like in Portal 2.

Deathmatch? What are you talking about? I thought I was talking about single player games...
You failed it.

Half-life 1 and 2 both came with a death match for their respective titles.
