Irregardless of Pedigree every game a developer produces is heralded as their "best work" and so on. Really I think people (and by people, I mean primarily the game media) should stop reporting this kind of hype and focus strictly on hard information. I also think that with the price of video games and other factors gaming journalists should give less print/air time to hype and only give real facts in order to prevent game companies from keeping everything close to their chest until the release date, at which point people find out "OMG this is a giant turd" or doesn't do half of what was implied earlier.
Of course then again I've been critical of game journalism and reviews for a while. I just can't help but go "gee, a game company says their new game is going to be good... that surprises me" while overflowing with sarcasm and bile.
No offense to Valve, or anyone else. It's just that I really can't see much here except for the revelation that there is a Portal 2, and Valve is making it.
Plus, I think Valve deserves a bit of scorn overall. I have some respect for their game developments, but let's not forget this is also one of the companies which should have been spearheading a charge against Australia's anti-game legislation when "Left 4 Dead" was targeted. Instead they backed down and censored the game for the Austrlian market. When I look at their new products, I can't help but wonder now if they are going to consider this kind of thing and try and make them "acceptable" to nations with policies like that so they don't have to create seperate edited versions. Meaning that I'd be vary of Portal because frankly it was a sort of nilistic pitch black humor that made that experience so profound. If a couple of severed fingers was "too much" then what about entire buildings being gassed on "bring your daughter to work day" (OMG! Child Murder!)? Is their next game going to be about using the portal gun to deliver pies to a muppet picnic?
Basically I think we need less hype in general, and I also think that people should be a lot more critical of Valve itself. This is a company that has made a fortune from it's games, and services like STEAM (I currently own a ton of games from their service due to their sales), has put on a great face, but in the end backed down bigtime. Right now we should be concerned how this potentially is going to affect their work, is the "Valve Attitude" a thing of the past? Surely they turned out to be all bark and no bite not too long ago.
Just my opinions of course.
