In Valve, quality is proportional to development time, so I don't think we'll be back in Aperture Laboratories for a good 16 years from now.

I guess this means that they haven't started working on Episode 3 yet.
I doubt they'll put it out for a long time if people keep complaining
Who's complaining? I think all the fuss is kinda funny.
How would you feel if someone started pestering you too do something you didn't wan't and didn't have too do?
I DON'T CARE when Episode 3 comes out. I was just inferring that, if Portal 2 is already their best game, than Episode 3 probably isn't in production.

I hope this is coming out on PS3. Although Valve have stated that they hate the PS3, so that probably won't happen.

Ok then, thanks for clarifying

They listened to what the fans liked?

It's going to be full of Weighted Companion Cubes and cake jokes. Calling it now.
Actually, I think we're going to see different sharpie-marker writings on the walls in different handwriting styles a-la L4D, and some of them will be bitching about how cliche those jokes are.

OT:
It's more Portal... what more can you ask for?

Okay, so if they guys who brought us some of my favorite games of all time say that this is their best game of all time, and it's a sequel to a fantastic game... I think I'm justified in being a little bit excited.

Seriously, this can't come fast enough. Now if they would just make Episode 3...

Oh Gabe, why'd you have to go and say that? Surely you're aware of Murphy and his insidious Laws?
Yes, most of your games thus far have been excellent, but making that kind of quote invites disaster. Your Achilles Heel thus far has been your release dates, and the missing of them (WHERE THE &*%# IS EPISODE 3?!). Don't make another opening for failure to enter through!

Apparently, the programming for The Orange Box was so complicated was so complicated and time consuming that Valve vowed never to release a game on the PS3 again. Shame.

If I can say this...screw Portal right now. God damn it, it's nice, but I want some more Half-Life action.

I probably never would have played the original if I hadn't bought the orange box for TF2 and to carry on with half life 2, so I'm really not that hyped.

Doesn't help that I'm not much of a fan of Valve either.

Valve, come on. You already made me a fanboy; you don't need to tell me how great your games are... Be cool.

OT: I want this. So, so, so much.

What did they do to change any genre? No doubt they make very good games, but I can't think of anything truly innovative besides the gravity gun, which nobody else used except Dead Space.
Well, Half-Life was a pretty revolutionary game.

My question stands: In what way? I do not doubt they created excellent pieces of software. I see both Half-Life games as the best single-player FPS ever created.
The statement I'm questioning is "Valve changed FPS". Changing a genre requires other people to actually adopting things from your work - and I don't see many shooters out there doing a lot things the way Half-Life does.
The complete lack of cutscenes is one thing I agree is probably the only way to really tell a story in a videogame - even though it's still far from perfection. But most FPS still use cutscenes. Half-Life was not as influental as, say, Gears of War. Since that, virtually everybody takes cover. Whether you like to or not. I personally don't.

Irregardless of Pedigree every game a developer produces is heralded as their "best work" and so on. Really I think people (and by people, I mean primarily the game media) should stop reporting this kind of hype and focus strictly on hard information. I also think that with the price of video games and other factors gaming journalists should give less print/air time to hype and only give real facts in order to prevent game companies from keeping everything close to their chest until the release date, at which point people find out "OMG this is a giant turd" or doesn't do half of what was implied earlier.

Of course then again I've been critical of game journalism and reviews for a while. I just can't help but go "gee, a game company says their new game is going to be good... that surprises me" while overflowing with sarcasm and bile.

No offense to Valve, or anyone else. It's just that I really can't see much here except for the revelation that there is a Portal 2, and Valve is making it.

Plus, I think Valve deserves a bit of scorn overall. I have some respect for their game developments, but let's not forget this is also one of the companies which should have been spearheading a charge against Australia's anti-game legislation when "Left 4 Dead" was targeted. Instead they backed down and censored the game for the Austrlian market. When I look at their new products, I can't help but wonder now if they are going to consider this kind of thing and try and make them "acceptable" to nations with policies like that so they don't have to create seperate edited versions. Meaning that I'd be vary of Portal because frankly it was a sort of nilistic pitch black humor that made that experience so profound. If a couple of severed fingers was "too much" then what about entire buildings being gassed on "bring your daughter to work day" (OMG! Child Murder!)? Is their next game going to be about using the portal gun to deliver pies to a muppet picnic?

Basically I think we need less hype in general, and I also think that people should be a lot more critical of Valve itself. This is a company that has made a fortune from it's games, and services like STEAM (I currently own a ton of games from their service due to their sales), has put on a great face, but in the end backed down bigtime. Right now we should be concerned how this potentially is going to affect their work, is the "Valve Attitude" a thing of the past? Surely they turned out to be all bark and no bite not too long ago.

Just my opinions of course.
