The article was good, made it sound a lot more epic than it was, though the post count for that thread was CRAZY. So happy Zynga got beat down and now in the March Madness I will be happy for either developer who wins because, I love both Bioware and Valve. Though my vote went towards Valve, Bioware is still an amazing developer.

Valve only won by advertising the contest in the Steam launcher on two occassions.

A tactic that Ecapist's have been telling Turbine fans was 'cheatiing' for the last year and that many Escapists used as an excuse for voting Turbine out this year.

Now those same members are patting themselves on the back for a hard earned victory (ignoring that they pillared other devs who used similar tactics, because this time it was a dev they like used these tactics).

I don't think that it's a victory of hardcore gaming over casual.
I think, seeing their spam tactics, it's a victary of gaming against bullshit.
And it was a fair victory.
They advertised, Valve advertised back. But, guess what, Valve didn't spam and Valve didn't abuse Portal and Left 4 Dead with windows that shouted "Vote for us there, there & there".

Amazing the supposed zeal a rather petty popularity contest can inspire. Made worse by the garnering of vote spam by both competing sides. But it continues the increasing rift in the gaming community, further segregating players for their choice of this particular media.

Oh how I would have loved to see the indignation of all these self-righteous 'hardcore gamers' had Zynga actually won.

But you're correct. Many on both sides did not listen, made terrible decisions, blamed the other side, raised double-standards, trolled, flamed, etc...

I, admittedly caught up by my first MM, tried my best to rally Twitter votes for Square during round 4. But I guess I'd do the same for my fave hockey team (the Habs). I made friends with a few of the notable Zynga supporters immediately after the Square Vs. Zynga thread (which was a mild thread in comparison to Valve Vs Zynga). Many of them raised valid arguments, spoke coherently (not an easy feat considering the circumstances) and showed that they could be valuable members of the Escapist community.

Valve has a large, loyal fan-base of hardcore gamers, while Zynga has a large, not so loyal, fan-base of casual gamers.

People who play Zynga games probably aren't even aware that the developer who is making their games are even called Zynga while Valve could serve its fan-base a new rendition of tetris mixed with blackjack and still sells millions of copies based on name alone..and it would probably be amazing.

Neither did Zynga. They posted links on their fan page and on their forums. The average player would not have seen these links. Unless they use the forums or visit the fan pages regularly. In fact I would go so far to say that if Zynga had put a voting link in any one of their launchers, the events that unfolded, may have been very different.

We stopped it this year, why wouldn't we be able to stop it next year?

This year, we got "help" from /b/, something that shouldn't have happened.
I was afraid it would backfire horribly. Like in Mass Effect, when the Salarians used Krogan to fight the Rachni.

I'm happy Valve won, but that was a fire we should not play with.

I got to admit that i had to have a chuckle to the couple posters that are trying hard to spin the facts in order to make them look worse than they are, and in order to make the zinga fans look like the poor victims of the cruel abusive hardcore gamers.

They came, they spammed and trolled like hell, they received what they deserved.

Virtual farmers should know it very well. One reaps what he sows.

Valve did nothing else than finally responding in kind to the spam from Zynga. The simple truth is that if any of the previous developers Zynga faced responded in kind earlier, Zynga wouldn't have even passed the first turn, as the Aion fans would have ripped them a new one.

Yeah, I played mostly spectator during the Zynga Vs Valve thread. I drummed up only every so often (usually to either post a non-offensive rallying image and I think I gave Aemroth the low-down at some point as he had missed the beginning).

Heh, well it's nice to see you again. Actually I've been meaning to add Aemroth as a friend because he kept a better head on his shoulders than most. Though, I'm usually kinda leery about sending out friends requests, it might seem...presumptuous.

Though as now the contest is winding down and everything is becoming more civil, any ideas on good places to post? Usergroups are alright, but maybe something a little more open.

I'm actually quite sure that whoever called /b/ in DID cause a pretty disastrous backfire. I'm ready to bet that most of them voted for Zynga.

Those people thrive at the idea of griefing others, and the very best way to grief was to vote for Zynga.

Try Forum Games. They're a good way to start getting to know people.

I'm worried that we sort of metaphorically "sold our soul" to beat Zynga.
