Have they released betas for the Half-Life episodes that came before?

If not then i'd guess Team Fortress 3 since they went Free to Play and therefore only make money from fancy hats these days with that game. Yes, i do believe he's just playing you with fake promises and vague answers for Half-Life (episode) 3.

I think it's one or the other i just don't imagine them churning out Portal 3 already, even as a beta, and while it could be Left 4 Dead 3 i just don't think so...

Gonna be interesting to see what happens as this progresses

Public betas? No. They have spoken about closed betas before though.

Gabe came out a couple of weeks ago saying how happy he was with the money they were getting from TF2, so I can't see a new TF anytime soon.

Of course, the e-mails may have been faked, of course, but VALVe has been a jolly bunch lately. There was that employee who showed up to a game conference in a Half-Life 3 tee. And now, with the release of a code-filled teaser over the weekend, and the appearance of a Doug Rattman Twitter [https://twitter.com/#!/Doug_Rattman] feed, we do know one thing. VALVe hath started yet another ARG.

Just something I think should be brought to your attention--either Rattman is not an official Valve twitter feed or it's been hacked, because there are some disturbing things popping up in that feed that I fear will become NSFW very soon.

EDIT: Yeah, it's definitely not anything from Valve. Look at what's below Rattman's name:

"Scientist at Aperture Science. Paranoid and schizophrenic, with a love of cubes and painting. ((Portal Aftermath RP)) Married to LeenaRattman."

It's a feed set up for a Portal 2 RP.

Episode 3 just won't be enough. It needs to be Half Life 3 for me to care about a Valve game. If the hype is just for another quickie expansion ep, I'll be sad.

It's probably one of Valves multiplayer mod games like Team Fortress or Left 4 Dead.

I doubt that the name will have anything to do with the actual length of the game. It will have the length that Valve desires for next hl game, heck they could name it "Half-Life 2: Episode Penguin" and it wouldn't matter to me but they will probably name it episode 3 for brand recognition.
They gained many fans during the episodes "era", especially thanks to the orange box. So, many are now expecting an episode 3 to end the current arc and people who aren't knowledgeable at all about the games may get confused. There are actually people who have said, as silly as it sounds, that they won't play the game if it called hl3 because it doesn't feel right for them.

But I agree that the next hl game should be longer than ep1 and ep2, after 4 years and probably 5 or 6 will have passed until we'll be able to play it, which is about the same length that hl2 took to develop.

Could it be possible that it would be a Portal 3 Announcement, Half-Life 3 Annoucement, and a L4D3?

Three threes? That would be awesome, actually. Though I think it may be a bit to early for Portal 3.

A new oragne box prehaps? Half Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, Portal 3 and Team Fortress 3. Not sure which I would be more excited about.

So, seems unlikely. Besides, unless it was Portal 3 (which would be alarmingly fast for Valve, especially since they've still got Portal 2 DLC planned) both pieces of ARG evidence being from Portal is a bit weird. Of course, maybe the video does contain clues, maybe the email was real. But the only thing we actually know, is there is a video with cool stuff happening in the background.

It's not "fake," it's just not officially from Valve. Just look at the tweets and description under the feed name. It was an account set up for a Portal 2 roleplay. I don't know how anyone could have mistook it for something from Valve, even the profile picture is obviously fanart.

The Beta sign could mean two things:

1) The beta for something. This could be Team Fortress 3 (you never know), Left 4 Dead 3, a demo for Half Life 3/Episode 3...anything

OR

2) Beta is a type of radiation, next to alpha and gamma. Substances give off radiation. When a substance starts degrading, the time it takes to degrade is known as its HALF LIFE. I may have defined half life wrongly, but they could be referencing the type of radiation, meaning it will be about Half Life.

But who knows, it's Valve.

pretty close but the term half life is one of the few terms which make actual sense.
Its the time it takes for the material to lose half of its radioactive matter. (in other words the time it takes to lose half its life)
