...because we are on the path to creating meat without killing actual animals.

http://www.sphere.com/science/article/scientists-turn-stem-cells-into-pork/19319475

For those of you too lazy to read, scientists in London have grown actual pork from the stem cells of pigs. Theoretically one pig could provide 1,000,000 times the amount of pork they normally would. Granted, it's not exactly like real pork: the texture isn't right and it has a lower amount of protein than normal. But it's still a first step towards mass-producing meat.

So, Escapist, what do you think about this? Disgusting, unnatural pseudo-meat that could make us sick and put farmers out of business? Or miraculous way of ending world hunger?

Well, it's still killing an animal.

Also, a lot of vegetarians I know are because of the taste, not morals, so this will make no difference to them.

It will probably take another 20 years to make it not taste like crap...

I eagerly await the coming of the vat-meat.

It's one more piece of the puzzle for my eventual exodus from this godforsaken rock ball.

Well I suppose that's great news for both sides. While there are improvements still to be made to the product I believe they can still be overcome.

A first step to a vegetarian and meat eater tolerating world perhaps? We can all dream.

Not sure how vegans will think of it though.

wow, thats pretty damned epic, that is.

It would also be a great victory for environmentalists: cows produce more greenhouse gases than all the transport devices on the planet (due to the methane they produce, etc), so grown meat will hopefully eliminate the need for vast numbers of cows and other harmful creatures.

That said, I don't think it'll make vegetarians an extinct phenomenon, some people just don't like meat :p

I'll go with the latter. Sounds like an amazing thing to me. I'd not heard of anything like this before, the number of pros versus cons I can think of are staggering.

"Organic" and "All-natural" are stupid reasons to prefer a food. A food tasting better is a pretty good reason, though. I'd eat it if it tasted exactly like the real thing, but until then I'll stick to remains of innocent little animals.

Vegetarians, your days are numbered...

...Unless you don't eat meat because you don't like it.

OT: In answer to your 2 questions, yes to both (well, the "out of business" part of the first question).

That would be both good and bad. Good on the environmentalist point of view, bad from the farmer's point of view (less jobs). And there would be people complaining about how it is not real meat and so forth. I think it is interesting.

I think this is brilliant but I still wont eat it... I am only a vegetarian becuase I do not like the flavour of most meat.

This is a really good step foward.

Eh, I'd give it a try, but until they can get the taste right and stuff I'll stick to eating Babe.
[sub]For those who've seen the movies, my bad, but boy is that little pig yummy.[/sub]

For some strange reason that doesnt sound appetizing at all, in fact it makes vegetarianism seem almost tempting..

So there's this manga (Bio-meat), and it's all about this very thing, except they made the meat product able to eat garbage, only if you let it out, it goes wild and eats everything. Chaos ensues. Maybe this is a bad idea... (btw, I'm vegetarian, but not for animal rights reasons, so it wouldn't convince me anyways).
