There's just one thing I don't get in the comments so far...

"If that were to happen here people would have smashed them all open and taken everything"?

Really? Because you can do that already. I don't see rioting in the street over stealing stuff from vending machines. Maybe if we were to make it free people would sit there and push the button until they got 30 or 40 of the soda and then go away, but smashing open the vending machines? What?

Giving people your product for free for a short time so they will get a taste for it is good business strategy, as long as you can afford it and the product doesn't suck. Carry on.

I hate to ask but does that include the soiled panties machines?

The Japanese vending machines carry everything, from fresh lobsters, to soiled panties, to caned coffee.

Wonder how long vending machines would last here if that happened.
They wouldn't have even lasted this long as people would have smashed the glass and stolen what was inside long ago here in the states.

I don't really think the idea that, "Americans" would plunder everything in sight would hold true if it was in disaster like this. Look at 9/11 the days that followed crime rates dropped and people felt like they had to band together, and buy tons of cheap plastic flags, huge disaster tend to create a different mindset so to assume, "Americans" would just loot everything in this same situation is short sighted.

Now if it was just out of the blue vendors did this in America then ya everything would be gone in a hour.

My question is the company trying to milk positive PR out of something out of their control? Or is it trying to protect its investment knowing that the worse it gets the more likely their vending machines will be raped and pillaged for anything of value?

Yes, we give you free drinks... Prease do not smash our macheens
Likely a combination of kindness, and what you said.

BTW, don't vendning machines in japan have entire meals, toys, and other stuff in them?
Japan has everything in Vending Machines.
Vending machines inside other vending machines!?

Is it just me, or would a (clean) panties vending machine actually be extremely helpful in the middle of a natural disaster? :D

That's what I thought...

So essentially everything is free?
Not really. I'm pretty sure Suntory machines only have beverages in them. I could be wrong though.

It's nice to see them taking action, but soft drinks? Let's hope they also have bottles of water. >>
Well, at least there's some calories in there, and after a bit you're just not going to get dehydrated from that. There will be more water in the soda than in you, so yeah.

This story is complete bull. I live in Tokyo and I still have to shell out 130 yen for a bottle of water. 150 for coke.

I'm not sure if the other companies are doing it, so make sure it's a Suntory machine. If it's a machine with coke in it it's definitely not Suntory.

I kinda just put Japan down as another crisis I cant save by reading a hundred articals about but after reading the first post here I kinda want to know more about what the people really are doing over there. Seems like they are still able to set such inspiring examples even in such horrid times.

As for some of you here.. A massive portion of Japan just got wiped out so I doubt people are worried about a few shitty vending machines being smashed.
This is a genuine act of kindness from the people that can make a difference. Why is that so hard to believe?
Would like to see another place in the world try that.. or will we all just make jokes about panties like the ignorant idiots we are?
Nom Nom Nom!!!!

I'll have you know I consume a good half of my calories a day from soft drinks.

This is because I often don't have time to sit down and eat. I am a trim 130lbs, also, I'll have you know. Soda can keep the hunger pains away well.

well japan can a strange place so not really that surprised
Yup. Used even. I think I heard of worse things in their vending machines, but my memories a bit iffy on the subject.
They once did that in one machine, and quickly stopped, but it became famous.

[small]Notice how 4 or 5 posters have brought this up, seemingly without reading to see that the previous people already have?[/small]

Man, it´s nice to hear something, anything positive from Japan.
I would really miss that country if it went tits up, so I hope they get through this.

Well, yes, 9/11 was a moment of genuine, national good-behaviour,
BUT look at what happened in New Orleans after the flood.
There was a metric fuckton of looting. (Which I find perfectly normal and understandable.)

Suntory has announced that all their soft drink machines are now free in order to help people overcome the food shortages that are going on.

Maybe this is just me, but I think Japan is one of the few countries where a company could do this and people wouldn't just go around from vending machine to vending machine filling up shopping carts with free drinks.

Edit: another story I read on Japanese twitter: apparently Tokyo Disneyland is doing the same with its snacks. One of the guys passing out the food noticed a couple of punk HS girls taking multiple bags at once. He was about to say something when he noticed that they were actually handing the extra bags out to small children that couldn't get anything due to the large crowds.
It is pretty amazing. Did you know that vending machines offer the same price for a larger item as the smaller version? Large coke? Same price as a regular.

There's probably a reason why nobodies fat over there.
