Anything Metal Gear Solid related.
Final Fantasy 7 and 9

The big win goes to Shadow of the Colossus.

LoZ music has to be my all time favorite. Then comes Final Fantasy, Fable, Kingdom Hearts, and I really love the intro on Brawl.

thank you all for appreciating good video game music that is memorable, not catchy.(sorry windfish).
I think you misunderstand me. I said that the best vgm IS memorable, and not catchy. I appreciate the hell out of it.

I really really like old school (well SNES anyway) Megaman and Castlevania tunes. Bloody Tears is friggin' sweet.

L4D music always fits with the gameplay.
I agree.

I've been playing Left4Dead recently and the music in it really works well with the actual game. It makes the game even more appealing.

I also really like the music from the Half-Life (Which I've already pointed out several times in other threads) and the Pikmin series.

Rather than link a song from the original Pikmin again, I'll use one from Pikmin 2.

In terms of video game soundtracks I often find myself enjoying the soundtracks to Chrono Cross and Shadow of the Colossus both of which were brilliantly composed. I have absolutely no shame in listening to a video game soundtrack. More frequently though I find myself listening to the soundtrack to Princess Mononoke which is arguably not a video game but is undeniably a gorgeous soundtrack.

Many video games these days tend to put a great deal of effort into producing the highest quality soundtrack they can make. It's why the Halo 2 soundtrack was arranged by Steve Vai, its why a lot more of them are coming out on CD.
I had to feel like a massive dork the other day when I was playing Starcraft on LAN with my buddy while we listened to the soundtrack to a different video game.

I still fervently believe that Akira Yamaoka's work on the Silent Hill-series is as sublime as the medium has gotten, as of yet.

I often listen to:
- The WoW soundtrack (hate the game all you want, the music is incredible)
- Super Mario Sunshine songs (they say it's the worst Mario game, but I enjoyed it the most, plus it has the best incarnation of the typical Mario tune EVER! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCwZPn2sJg0&feature=PlayList&p=D0D48579C6785888&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=1])
- Orchestrated versions of various Zelda songs
- Orchestrated Super Smash Bros Melee songs
- World of Goo soundtrack (did anyone ever suspect that this song [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoUSnDryaN8&feature=PlayList&p=486F844E49429292&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=17] was from a puzzle game?)
- Team Fortress 2. Most songs are actually from various trailers, but that doesn't make them less awesome. Art of War [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AwVkeTsvxg] is the most awesome drumline song I ever heard.

I'm still looking for more, but I'm slacking a bit with downloading.

PS: I just háve to include this WoW song, it plays in a Canada-ish area and fits so incredibly perfect:
I've never played a game as immersive as this and I've never seen music blend so perfectly will with the enviroment and background sounds as in WoW. Some of those songs made tears well up in my eyes, so beautifull. I thought vanilla WoW and TBC had some fantastic music, but then WotLK came along and trumpted them with ease. I miss that game sometimes, if only for the fantastic artwork and that gorgeous music.

Halo 3 and the Jak series have excellent sountracks that truely complement the story and gameplay. I would be tempted to say L4D as well, because no other game changes the music to fit the gameplay.

But for the ultimate video game music, one must look no further than Timesplitters 2. Listen to this epicness:

I love The Metal Gear Solid Snake theme by Harry Gregson Williams, and I have always loved the music from sonic 3, and knuckles and Sonic Spinball.
