You know you say that, and I think you think you're somehow being witty, but it was done like that on purpose; it's not like he's a poorly developed character, he's been made as a non-character.

Fair enough if you don't like the concept, but by comparing him to two actual characters where the writers have taken a different approach just makes you look like an idiot. [small] And yes, I'm aware you were implying they were still poorly-written, yet Freeman makes them look good.[/small]

Uh... it's throw back to the Mafia vs. GTA argument.

I hear that Lara Croft's not a very good one either.

OT: Gah, I know there was someone but I seem to have blanked them out.

Also Gordon Freeman was made by Valve... ewww.
because Valve has a history of making bad games...

It's 2:50am here so my sarcasm detector might be off but I hope this was sarcasm.
I don't hate protagonists. Somehow I always find a way to like them for something. But there are protagonist that I kinda dislike sometimes. I don't really like Kratos. He's awesome and all but he should really chill a little cause his tendency to kill everything organic or non-organic makes him look retarded sometimes.

Unless I am mistaken, this is the longest any similar thread has gone without mentioning Raiden from MGS2.

I wonder how much longer it can go.

...oh wait.

Oh no buddy, I'm not being witty in the least. I'm being honest.

I don't care what kind of excuses Valve lovers make the fact remains that he is a noncompelling, non-entity who could be replaced by a broom and you wouldn't know.

"He's supposed to be you" my ass, every game character is an avatar that represents you. It's just that a good avatar should have a little something interesting to keep drawing you back. I enjoy God of War because Kratos is a badass, which means that when I play the game I am a badass.

If your character is silent you better make gameplay intersting enough to draw me back. Halo has a boring protaganist but it's fun to play. Half-Life has a boring main character and is not fun to play.

And Valve fanboys can take long walks on short piers for all I care. I've played many Valve games (Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, TF2) some of them when they lauched (brother got Half-Life 2 on release) and I hate every single game. They are boring, boring, boring to me.

You don't see me getting pissed in every "I hate Halo/CoD/Oblivion" thread because I know different people like different games. No sense bitching about it right? Why would a Valve fan be different?

Pretty sure no one will agree on this but Shepard from Mass Effect, I just don't like, he's too perfect...-_-

Treeinthewoods: To each his/her own. I'm curious, though. Do you like the character from the original Doom? He has about the same amount of growth as a character. It's a common FPS issue, that's only really started to improve. It's also a problem with 90% of all RPGs, with their silent protagonists and all.

Anyway. Only one I really, truly hate. One that make me cringe whenever I see or hear them. Tidus. I mean, really? He acts like he's 4 years old, is completely stuck up, and dresses (as all Squenix games) like a girl. Sure, he gets less stuck up as the game goes on, but included in the bundle are a pile of OTHER characters that suck. So why even play that far?

right he is not characterized because the opening sequences of HL were supposed for maximum immersion. Freeman is the Player. So any kind of information or even speech could destroy the aim of it. And at least it worked quite well as the games were new, through good optics and nice dramaturgy of scripting events.
Well that at least is the plan. But i cant see were the Chief should be "better" here, cause the same technique was used in Halo. With a little less effort and time, the game starts to fast paced for a really similar approach.
There are some novels using this device quiet nicely, creating a truely different reading experience.

Gordon Freeman's character is developed by how other characters react to him. He has plenty of depth, he just doesn't have to speak for it to be apparent. Plus, Master Chief? Are you serious? He has zero emotion, he is the most boring character ever. He's basically a talking head with attatched guns. Fenix too, they're both just copy/pasted space marines that try to be gruff and tough, but are really just stock and uninteresting.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I would say. Plus he always comes across as somewhat brain-damaged, what with the scenes that go on like:
Other Character: "[insert plot important person/thing/place]."
Tidus: "[plot important person/thing/place]?"
Other Character: "[insert overlong and condescending explanation]."
Tidus: "...I don't get it."

Most of the Final Fantasy leads

except Cecil from 4
...As much as I like the game, I must respectfully disagree. Or, at least I disagree on "Dark Knight" Cecil. It always annoyed me that, at the start of the game when he's a "Dark" knight, he's the most sympathetic character you meet. Even Rosa, his White Mage girlfriend, tells him to stop whimpering. It was kind of a role reversal; Kain should have been the one to rebel and try and rescue Rydia, while dark Cecil should have been the stoic hard-ass. It would have made his change to a Paladin (among other things) much more dramatic.

People jump all over Dead Space for Isaac being a complete non-character, but it's the same approach Valve took with Half-Life. They are both non-characters, and there isn't anything there whatsoever. It's pure fanboyism to speculate that "it's genius", when it was just a different approach, nothing more, nothing wholly special at all.

Too many fanboys in rose-colored glasses displaying their double standards.

It's like a Gamespot review I read yesterday. The review for Kane & Lynch. I don't even like the game, and don't plan on playing it, but in the review they consistently railed on it for "being too short" and "not enough content". Also, I shit you not, they claimed the "multiplayer gets old fast too, because you only play a few modes in a handful of maps." Then they subsequently gave it a 6, or a 7, with the "shortness" being the drawback.

Jump to their review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and they give the game a 9.0. Apparently shortness and famously and epically repetitive (also boring) multiplayer is not a factor.

Let me reiterate, I don't care for either Kane & Lynch or Call of Duty. Just pointing out the obvious fanboyism and favoritism rife within the industry, be it fans, critics or other.

The industry has yet to mature.

He is far from perfect. He may be saving the galaxy but with every choice he makes, someone gets screwed. Try as hard as you can to be perfect, and you'll still be screwed somehow.

Especially at the end of ME2...something bad is GOING to happen on either end.

Anyway, hes an NPC but Rosh Penin. What a whiny pathetic excuse of a jedi...
