I'd show him the back of my head because this argument can never be won.
Art is subjective, as is preference for anything, like video games or music.
You can't force anyone to think the way you do about any of these things, so why bother trying?
Let him like what he likes, and think what he thinks, and rest assured in the knowledge that no matter what he thinks nothing will change your idea of video games being art.

Well, if a Cambell soup can is art...and Red Dead Redemption or Oblivion is not art...then being art is a bad thing.

I'll prove video games qualify as art when you prove modern art qualifies as art. It would seem to be a rather silly label people apply to whatever they think they can get away with.

That said, it is rather interesting to consider that, in the case of video games, the efforts of hundreds of artists can go into producing a thing that is not considered art by some.

I would say that I have to prove nothing to that fool, but if I was pressed further I'd probably pick BioShock.

I would say a cool game but they won't know it. The only games people at my school play are low-life FPSs. I'd say Red Dead.

Tetris. They'll lose their souls to the blocks and beg for something else to get them away from that video game cocaine. Then I would make them play Crono Trigger.

Tetris is to weaken their minds.

I feel that a text cannot be art, and the moment a game involves narrative, it is then a text.

But it is how you tell the story that is artistic.

Art is simply human creativity. The expression of creativity. It doesn't have to be so deep and existential that only art snobs appreciate it. I don't give a shit what Ebert thinks, video games are art.

And by the way, what kind of psycho jock guy tries to argue the concept of "art"? Haha, I'm not buying it.

I don't need to prove jack sh*t to some random stranger. Besides...whether games are or aren't art...it really doesn't matter.

art is a visual, interactive and/or creative work. games can cover all 3 as well as a painting, music or films. if pressed to choose one game it would be 'odin shpere'.

Ok, so this person runs over to me and shouts in my face insulting me twice and none of this was much provoked my anything. This person just wants to be an absolute twat and I see no reason to waste my time explaining myself to them.

And I also don?t see why videogames as art really ties into this, why does that need to be the justification for having them as a hobby? I would also wonder why this twat, who doesn?t spend tine with games, discuss games, or has much to do with games (until now apparently) would even know about the whole discussion of videogames as art.

Damn dodgy hypothetical?s :<

In a different hypothetical or even just plain strait out asked on an internet forum; The Path or Okami are two that come to mind.
