Edit: Wow! Thanks for all the replies! I'll make sure to keep checking in for more.

Basically, I'm too cheap to get a "gaming rig" or anything of the sort, I play all the hottest PC releases but approximately 4 years late (when I can run it on a cheap laptop). What should I try?

For reference, some of the stuff that WILL run on my current box: Hitman 3, Vice City, CIV 3, Sid Mier's Pirates, Max Payne, Star Wars Jedi Knight Series
And some that WILL NOT: Sins of a Solar Empire, Portal, Thief 1, Halo 1, Hitman 4, CIV 4, Prince of Persia - Warrior Within, Psychonauts, StarWars - KOTOR 1

nice. Very nice.

Edit: in case there ever is content, I find that games from ~2004 back work on modern crappy PCs.

Is there going to be any content for this thread?

EDIT: If the title reflects the spirit of the thread, Thief: Deadly Shadows works fine on a crappy PC.

Why does the enter button post the thread?

Edit:
Wow, your computer is even worse than my 3 year old laptop, are you sure Halo 1 does not run, even on low? Here are some good games that should work. Starcraft, Warcraft 3, trackmania nations, red alert 2. You could try renegade if you want a fps. Other than that, browser games
www.armorgames.com and stuff like that.

You'd probably get a pretty good framerate on Tetris, don't expect any dynamic lighting though

Well I'm just throwing this out there since I've been thinking about this game for some reason, but I remember the Blitzkrieg games fondly (particularly Blitzkrieg 2, being the most recent). They're somewhat old, Blitzkrieg 2 having come out in 05, so I assume they'll run for you. So if you're interested in RTSs, I recommend them.

I might reinstall Blitzkrieg 2 on my computer, actually.

My recommendations are American McGee's Alice and the Longest Journey, provided that you can find a copy of either of them.
